1 HSEMATTERS A Keppel Group Health, Safety & Environment publication Issue Top honours at WSH Awards Keppel won big at the WSH Awards 2015, sweeping a total of 35 awards, the highest number of awards won by a single organisation this year The Keppel Group clinched 35 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards on 29 July 2015, the highest number of awards won by a single organisation this year. Organised by the Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC) and Singapore s Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the annual awards recognise organisations and individuals that have contributed to achieving excellence in workplace safety and health. Of the 35 awards, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) bagged 31 awards under the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) category for its exemplary performance as well as good management systems. Keppel Shipyard clinched the WSH Innovation Award for the Coupler Repair Workbench. The winning project team developed a jig to help lock a coupler in place, reducing workers physical contact with the coupler and impact wrench and thereby minimising risks of injury. Mr Ayyaperumal Tamizharasan, Hull and Steel Outfitting Supervisor, Keppel Singmarine, was conferred the Supervisor Award for his exemplary performance in caring for workers under his charge. Keppel DHCS and Keppel Singmarine garnered the WSH Performance (Silver) Awards. This is the fifth consecutive year that Keppel DHCS, a subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure, has clinched this award for its district cooling systems (DCS) plant operations and Engineering, Procurement and Construction project to provide DCS services to MediaCorp s new campus at Mediapolis@one-north. Mr R K Jaggi, GM, Group Health, Safety and Environment, Keppel Corporation, said, At Keppel, safety is not only a top priority but more importantly a core value. Editorial Safety paradigm R K Jaggi As we approach the end of another year, it is important to take stock of where we are in our safety journey.

Since it began in 2006, the annual WSH Awards has consistently ranked Keppel among the top companies in Singapore with excellent track records in health and safety.

In July, the Group clinched 35 awards at Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards 2015, the highest achievement by a single organisation (see story on page 1). Since it began in 2006, the annual WSH Awards has consistently ranked Keppel among the top companies in Singapore with excellent track records in health and safety. Also in the same month, Keppel AmFELS received the American Equity Underwriters Safety and Health Award for being the safest company in its industry for 2014 (see story on page 4). Keppel AmFELS received the same award in 2007 and Beyond awards and industry recognition, more importantly, we are glad to see more Keppelites taking the initiative to improve safety in their workplace. A team from Keppel Land China, recognising that electrical faults in construction sites are a common safety hazard, designed an electrical distribution box less prone to malfunction (see story on page 7). Innovations such as these go a long way towards ensuring everyone returns home safely at the end of every workday. Despite strides made in our safety journey, Keppel suffered another fatal incident this past quarter. This shows that more needs to be done to further improve safety in our workplaces. Senior management from across the Group will gather for a safety leadership roundtable session later this year to discuss further enhancements to our safety management processes. This November, safety will take centre stage at the 9th Keppel Group Safety Convention and inaugural Keppel Group Safety Awards. The theme Our Safety & Well-Being: Let s Do Our Part emphasises that everyone, whether employee or stakeholder, has a part to play in building a safer, more productive work environment. A first-ever workshop for HSE professionals across the Group, including overseas business units, will also be held in November. This workshop aims to promote teambuilding, sharing of knowledge and best practices, and discussion on common issues and challenges. This is part of our strategy to build a more cohesive and collaborative approach to manage HSE globally. As we strive towards Vision 2020, let us all continue to do our part in achieving a safer, better Keppel. 3 Performance boon To recognise Keppel Shipyard s excellent safety performance during the repair work on the oil product tanker, American Progress, vessel owner SeaRiver Maritime awarded the shipyard a bonus of $50,000 on 18 August Paul Dawson, Project Manager, SeaRiver Maritime, said, The safety performance by Keppel Shipyard improves with each project we work on together. SeaRiver Maritime is pleased to partner Keppel Shipyard, which shares our commitment to safety. Congratulations to Keppel for the outstanding work on American Progress! Keppel Shipyard s repair work for American Progress includes hull painting, installation of a new food macerator unit and new sewage tank unit as well as roller chock modification. Keppel Shipyard and SeaRiver Maritime have collaborated on four projects to date, including American Progress. Over the years, Keppel Shipyard has built up its reputation as the global industry s trusted partner for the repair and upgrading of a diverse range of vessels. Its three yards in Singapore Tuas, Benoi, and Gul are able to repair and refurbish 400 to 500 vessels per year. Through various platforms such as training programmes, leadership courses, promotion of innovation, workshops, campaigns as well as feedback platforms, we strive to inculcate a robust safety culture at Keppel s yards, projects, plants, warehouses and construction sites in Singapore and overseas. We are very encouraged by the WSHC s recognition of our sustained efforts, which spurs us to continue to push forward in our quest for an incident-free workplace. Beyond awards and recognition from the industry, our greatest reward is seeing everyone return home safely at the end of every work day. 4 Safety milestones Keppel Offshore & Marine continues to make steady and safe progress on its projects in Brazil and the USA. Brazil BrasFELS achieved two million safe man-hours on Urca, a DSS 38E semisubmersible rig on 16 July As of 2Q 2015, the unit is more than 90% complete. On 12 August 2015, BrasFELS also celebrated more than six million safe man-hours for FPSO P-66. The yard has since completed its modules fabrication workscope, and has started commissioning works for integrating the modules. USA In July 2015, Keppel AmFELS in Brownsville, Texas, USA, received the American Equity Underwriters (AEU) Safety and Health Award, given to members of the American Longshore Mutual Association (ALMA) for being the safest company in its industry for The awards were presented at the ALMA Conference on 20 July 2015 in Key Biscayne, Florida. Keppel AmFELS LLC has been a member of ALMA since 2003 and also received the AEU Safety and Health Award in 2007 and At the six million safe man-hours ceremony for FPSO P-66, three of the project s best workers received recognition for their exemplary behaviour Another significant safety milestone celebrated by Keppel AmFELS in July was the completion of 750,000 man-hours without incident during the construction of one of their current projects. Upholding standards Keppel Offshore & Marine s (Keppel O&M) Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team regularly conducts workshops to inculcate a strong safety mindset among its employees and subcontractors. On 23 and 24 June 2015, over 230 participants including management, employees and subcontractors from Keppel Nantong Shipyard attended a workshop led by Keppel O&M s Director (HSE & Special Projects) Mr Yong Chee Min. Besides a review of findings from Keppel O&M s HSE audit, the workshop also included a study of the cause of workplace incidents in Keppel O&M s yards. Mr Yong shared, With more than 30,000 Keppelites in our yards worldwide, it is crucial that communication channels between our yards remain open and active. Such workshops are important as they provide a platform for our HSE personnel in Singapore to guide, support and align safety standards. By sharing our programmes and messages, we can learn from each other s best practices. To strengthen Keppel Nantong Shipyard s safety culture, Keppel O&M s Director (HSE & Special Projects) Mr Yong Chee Min (centre in blue) conducted a safety workshop for the yard s management, employees and subcontractors Keppel Nantong is the first shipyard in the Gangzha district of Nantong to set up a safety-focused training centre. 4

5 Setting the benchmark Led by Mr Chow Yew Yuen (third from right), CEO of Keppel Offshore & Marine, Keppelites pledged their commitment to safety during the launch of Keppel FELS 19th HSE Excellence Promotion Campaign Keppel Offshore & Marine As part of efforts to create an incident-free work environment, Keppel FELS organises annual Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) promotional campaigns to inculcate safety ownership for all levels. On 27 July 2015, Keppel FELS launched its month-long HSE Campaign at Pioneer Yard, themed Stay safe, avoid line of fire, to remind staff to recognise potential hazards before commencing work. During the launch, Mr Chow Yew Yuen, CEO of Keppel Offshore & Marine, reminded Keppelites to look out for each other s safety and well-being. He shared, The operations of our yards are extensive, involving a multitude of trades that are usually fastpaced in nature. While we are able to identify and mitigate risks through safety measures, we also need to remain vigilant to prevent unnecessary incidents. Keppel Land The boards and management of business units across Keppel Group regularly walk the ground to engage staff and contractors to instil a strong safety mindset. Keppel Land s Management Safety Committee visited overseas project sites in Beijing and Sino- Singapore Tianjin Eco-City to foster a strong safety culture among ground staff Keppel Land s Management Safety Committee (MSC) adopted this hands-on approach when they visited project sites in Beijing and Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City (Sino-Singapore Eco-City) on 28 and 29 July Led by Mr Peter Jones, GM of Keppel Land s Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) department, and Mr Goh Han Kee, Deputy GM of Projects at Keppel Land, the MSC visited the commercial developments in Beijing, Seasons City and Serenity Villa in Sino- Singapore Eco-City to review safety guidelines and share best practices with ground staff. Mr Jones shared, The visits are great opportunities for the MSC to interact with our overseas Keppel Land staff and contractors. As a global developer, this is also a valuable platform for Keppel Land to share our core value of safety with our partners. 5

6 Spurring excellence About 120 employees, consultants and contractors of Keppel Land gathered for the company s Annual Consultants and Contractors Health and Safety Meeting to share best practices in safety As one of Asia s premier property companies, Keppel Land upholds safety as a top priority and strives for a zero-harm workplace by encouraging all stakeholders to embrace safety as a personal and collective responsibility. On 2 September 2015, Keppel Land s eighth Annual Consultants and Contractors Health and Safety Meeting saw about 120 Keppelites, consultants and contractors sharing best practices and recognising the efforts of project teams and contractors who have contributed significantly to safety excellence. Three Merit and two Gold Safety Recognition Awards were conferred to the project teams of The Glades, The Luxurie, Highline Residences, The Lakefront Residences and Corals at Keppel Bay. In his opening remarks, Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel Corporation and Chairman of Keppel Land, Mr Peter Jones (right), GM of Safety and Health at Keppel Land, received the bizsafe Mentor certification from Mr Wong Fong Loy, Senior Assistant Director of Industry Capability Building at the Workplace Safety and Health Council applauded the project teams for their achievements. Reiterating the importance of vigilance and teamwork, Mr Loh stressed that safety is a collective responsibility. During the meeting, Keppel Land was also conferred the bizsafe Mentor certificate for the third consecutive time. The bizsafe Mentor status is awarded to companies who have shown safety leadership in their industry. As a bizsafe Mentor, Keppel Land has the responsibility to guide and lead its contractors and all who work with them to be accountable and responsible for safety. To date, Keppel Land is one of ten companies in Singapore to have been conferred this status. 6

7 Reducing electrical risks Electrical faults are serious workplace safety hazards, especially in construction sites. In 2014, there were 8,000 fatalities related to malfunctioning electrical distribution boxes in China s construction sites, according to the country s National Safety Bureau. Seven staff from Keppel Land China (Wuxi), led by Regional Head Daniel Chong, took it upon themselves to design a safer and more robust electrical distribution box. The team also comprised Project Manager Chong Mun Wai, Main Contractor Project Manager Mao Zhi Gang, Safety Manager Tao Zhen, Construction Manager Gu You Hong, Technical Manager Mu You Zhao and Electrician Lu Da Jun. After analysing the conventional electrical distribution box design, the team identified several risk factors such as often loosely fixed covers, shoddily replaced fuses, exposed electrical cables, and inappropriate placement of distribution boxes. The team made improvements to the design, such as a lid-opening switch that triggers an alarm when the lid is not closed properly, and a spring coil that ensures the lid closes automatically after use. To prevent unauthorised changing of fuses, the team installed an overloading alarm. They also added an internal balancing control to automatically cut off power when the box is tilted, as well as a cable drum for safekeeping of cables. It took the team four months to successfully roll out the enhanced box design in Wuxi. After implementing the new design, the team s risk index for its Waterfront Residence project site was significantly reduced from 16 to the low risk range of three. This new electrical distribution box design not only minimises the risk of electrocution and other related injuries that impact productivity, but is also relatively cheap to produce, shared Daniel. We only spent RMB 220 ($48), including material and labour costs, on this project. The most important thing is that this innovation will help save lives and that is truly invaluable. The team plans to implement the enhanced electrical box design across Keppel Land China s other project sites. With 13 years of experience in the offshore and marine industry, Ayyaperumal is aware of the importance of maintaining vigilance in workplace safety and health. The supervisor of 18 workers shared, At the start of each work day, I gather my workers for a toolbox meeting where I run through the different safety areas that they should pay attention to. I understand what drives my workers and I try to connect with them on a personal level. They work hard to provide for their families so I emphasise the importance of maintaining a strong safety culture for everyone s well-being.
