1 M I N O C Q U A Forest Riders Snowmobile Club A Quarterly Newsletter Issue Number 3 - January 2018 We Couldn t Do It Without Them! Three years ago our club separated the Trail Boss job into separate positions, Trail Supervisor and Equipment Manager. In the process of developing a job description for the Equipment Manager, Pat Harkins had a vision of creating a volunteer friendly work environment, in the equipment shed, for members who enjoy working with equipment. So, one of the responsibilities of this new position was written to do just that. Two years ago, much of the volunteer hours during the fall months were spent renovating the shed and creating that welcoming work environment. Typically there were a dozen or so members involved in that project. A vision was coming together. The only thing lacking was the right person to take on the Equipment Manager position. A couple appointments were made during these first years, but the club just couldn t find the right person and Pat was reluctant to take on the responsibility. Finally, at the end of last season and with a little coaxing from the club President, Pat volunteered to be the Equipment Manager. He worked diligently to grow the number of volunteer workers to over thirty and Tuesday nights have become known as the Shed Work Nights. Mind you, there are never that many people out there on any given Tuesday. This group of dedicated workers have become the backbone of our club s operation. Through over 450 volunteer hours over the course of the season, members maintain our equipment. They fix things when they break, change fluids when needed, repair broken or bent parts on the snow drags. In a nutshell, they keep our equipment running in tip top shape. In addition to that, the crew takes care other tasks that need to be done like checking in sign orders and cleaning the equipment and the shop. The list goes on. Last year the club needed a little extra help out on the trails to brush a reroute and our Maintenance Manager looked to this group to get it done. Some of these volunteers are from out of town and help out when they can. There are however a number of members that participate on a regular basis and I would like to recognize them for a job well done! Thank You Doug Holle, Mike Deutscher, Bruce LaRose, Bob Rynders, Bryan Van Loo, Dennis Mirr, Jon Hollander, Art Wehnert and John Ryan. We also have two specialty workers, Curtis Hupf who does welding when needed and he painted our oldest snow drag. Brian Dutcher was recently recruited to do the more advanced diesel work that needs to be done. So once again, thanks Pat for taking over the position of Equipment Manager, organizing our Tuesday Work Nights and coordinating the work crew to keep our equipment in great condition and operating out on the trails! If you would like to participate in this volunteer opportunity, contact Pat at: pwharkins@gmail.com. January Page "1

2 M I N O C Q U A F O R E S T R I D E R S Trail Supervisor Report This has been a very busy season. Trail Maintenance Manager, Bob Rynders, worked hard to finish up major trail work that needed to be done to make our trails safer. This should signal the end of two years of trail widening and grading. The Area Sign Project was completed before the trails were open. Thanks to Jerry Larson and Bruce La Rose for helping other Area Leaders Doug Holle, Mike Deutscher, Bryan Van Loo and Jack Tenge to install the new signs, insuring that they were positioned in a consistent manor throughout our trail system. President s Report When I first joined the Forest Riders back in 2013, I was a little disappointed that the club didn t offer a group ride opportunity. After becoming President, I decided that it would be worth the effort to try to organize a weekly ride, as a means to get to know fellow members or to not have to ride alone. Since then this activity has really evolved into something special. If I m not mistaken, each of our rides this year had over twenty participants. In fact, one of the them topped the thirty mark! Club News By-Law Amendment: The Board of Directors is recommending a By- Law change to the membership at our next regular meeting. Members will review the change in February and be able to ask questions about its content. At the March regular meeting, the second reading of the amendment will take place f o l l o w e d b y a v o t e o f t h e membership. Brat Fest is Back: It s been a tradition of the Forest Riders to have a Spaghetti Dinner fund raiser in February. During the past three years, Mama s Supper Club has hosted the event. This year, Mama s has closed their doors for the winter season and our club was without a February event. Trail grooming was somewhat challenging at the beginning of the season with the limited snow we had to work with. A couple of major snow events kept our trails in mostly good condition, given that our club has seen an increased amount of traffic this year. Our trails also continue to get rave reviews for their quality from our members active on FaceBook. For the past couple of years Larry a n d N a n c y S c h u m h a v e volunteered to coordinate and lead the rides because of their knowledge of the greater area trail system and the good places to stop and have lunch. Thank you both for making this an enjoyable club event that I know I look forward to each week. Some of you long time members may remember that a Brat Fest was also a tradition of the club, held annually on New Year s Eve day. Well, that event disappeared a few years ago as the club went through changes, but now it s back, only this year it will be in February. Long time member, Sue Ramirez h a s v o l u n t e e r e d t o b e t h e coordinator of this Social and Fundraising event, which will take place at the Black Bear Bar and Grill. Thanks Sue for stepping up to the plate and planning this event. January Page 2
