Grab yer boots and head for Albuquerque, for a hootin, hollerin good time! The Stoddert website (DDG22.com) has all the forms ready for you to download, read through, fill out and send in! (Association members, your forms are enclosed in this newsletter). rates are $95.00 per night for single or double and $ per night for suites. You must request Stoddert Association rates at the time reservations are made to get this lower rate and for the Association to get credit for your stay. Self parking is free for Association guests. Contact the hotel directly at (505) for information on motor home/camper parking for registered guests. All registrations must be received by Marriott Albuquerque North by August 15, 2012, to ensure the group rates. Room reservations after this date will be subject to availability. The Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North, 5151 San Francisco Rd., Northeast, phone (800) , will be our host hotel for this reunion. The hotel is situated near Balloon Fiesta Park, Rio Grande Botanic Garden and the Albuquerque Airport. The High Desert Lounge also serves a full pub-style menu. Free internet access is available in both restaurants. Pack your swimsuit to take advantage of the indoor and outdoor swimming pools. 2 TOURS Let s start with the tour information! Wow! We ve got some dandy tours lined up to enjoy! Tour #1: Thursday, September 27 th. 8:30 AM 3:30 PM, Historic, Colorful Abuquerque. Cost: $60 per person. Established in 1706, Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico and is situated in the central part of the state, straddling the Rio Grande. The city population was 545,852 as of the last census. It has a metropolitan population of 907,775. Albuquerque is home to the University of New Mexico (UNM), Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories, and Petroglyph National Monument. The Sandia Mountains run along the eastern side of Albuquerque, and the Rio Grande flows through the city, north to south. Our tour will take us to a turquoise museum, where you can have your favorite piece of turquoise jewelry evaluated for origin and value. We ll visit the Old Town Plaza, where we will have an orientation and then be free to have lunch in one of the many restaurants and explore the shops. In the afternoon we will visit the Atomic Museum, aka the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. Free guided tours will be available, or you can choose to see the exhibits self-guided. Tour #2: Friday, September 28 th. 6:30 10 AM, Ballooning. Cost: $155 per person. The price of the tour includes transportation, one hour balloon flight, ceremony, refreshments and goodies at the end of the flight. All you need to take is your wallet, camera, and a sweatshirt. This tour must be reserved with a credit card then please bring your credit card, or other form of payment, with you on the morning of your flight. Any reservation cancellations within 48 hours of the flight will result in 50% charge on to the credit card. No open-toed shoes or flip flops. Please call World Balloon at and be sure to tell them you are booking through the Benjamin Stoddert Association reunion. Tour #3: Friday, September 28 th. 10:15 AM 5 PM, Experience Sante Fe. Cost: $56 per person. Included is transportation and a visit to the Loretto Chapel Museum which is famous for its miraculous staircase said to have been built by St. Joseph. Sante Fe, the historic capital city of New Mexico, is known for its high desert climate. The city and the surrounding areas have a high concentration of artists. They have come over the decades to capture on canvas and in other media the natural beauty of the landscape, the flora, and the fauna. One of the most well-known New Mexico based artists was Georgia O'Keeffe, who lived for a time in Santa Fe, but primarily in Abiquiu, a small village about 50 miles (80 km) away. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe is devoted to exhibitions of her work and associated artists or related themes. As of early 2006, it holds over one thousand of her works in all media. This tour has approximately 3 hours for lunch and shopping, exploring on your own. At this point, you will have to choose which tour to go on, if you want another tour. Tours #4 and 5 run simultaneously. Tour #4, Friday, September 28 th. 5:30 10 PM, Casino Hop. Cost $36.00 per person. This tour stops at two casinos: the Route 66 Casino west of town, and the Sandia Casino and Resort. There are many dining options at each, plus a lounge that serves alcohol. There is no free alcohol on the gaming floor owing to Pueblo tribal rules. There are gift shops and your standard gambling fare in machines and tables. The tour allows 1 hour 45 minutes at each, or you can choose to stay at the Sandia and use the free shuttle to return to the hotel. Page 2 of 6 Benjamin Stoddert Association Volume 8 No. 1

3 Tour #5: Friday, September 28 th. 5:30 10 PM, Sandia Peak Tram. Cost: $56 per person with tram ride, $36 per person with no tram ride. The Sandia Mountain rises 5,000 feet above Alburquerque to a height of over 10,000 feet. You will be transported to the base of the mountain and from there (if you choose) ride the tram to the summit. On the 15 minute ride up you will go through unique biological zones and view deep canyons and inspiring vistas. This is a mountain top experience you will always remember, especially if you choose to dine at the High Finance Restaurant at the summit. Dining is also available at Sandiago s Mexican Grill at the base. To find out which is your best option, call (Tour New Mexico, Inc.) and they will help you choose. More information is also available at The Sandia Casino and Resort, which is nearby, provides a number of other dining options including the Council Room Steakhouse and the Thur Shan Buffet. (Please note that the tram ride tour will go to an elevation of 10,378, so it is recommended that those with heart conditions or respiratory problems should consult their physician before riding the tram.) Tour #6: Saturday, September 29 th. 10 AM 4 PM, Getting Around: Shopping Tour. Cost: $28 per person. Maybe you didn t get enough time at one of the other tour stops, or there was someplace you wanted to visit that was skipped. This tour will provide transportation to re-visit a shopping area or visit an attraction that was missed. There will be multiple departures, so you needn t stay out the entire 6 hours and you can choose how many places you want to visit. The schedule will be available in the Reunion Hospitality Room. Stops will include: Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Museum, Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and Old Town Plaza. From Humor in Uniform: A new navy wife drove to Millington, Tennessee, to join her husband. After an exhausting 18-hour drive, she pulled up to the gate and told the guard that her husband was stationed there. Do you have a sticker? the guard asked. Uummm, yes I do, she said, confused. It s on the back. The sentry was skeptical as he walked to the rear of her car. But when he bent down to have a look, he smiled and waved her on. The sticker read Go Navy. (submitted by Jan Rollyson) Get in on the Drawing We will be selling 50/50 drawing tickets right up to a few minutes before the drawing at the 2012 reunion banquet dinner, so if you haven t won yet, you can try again. Tickets will no longer be mailed out with newsletters: instead you need only send your check in along with some of those pesky return address labels that regularly appear in your mailbox. Our treasurer will take care of the funds and will even stick the address labels on the tickets. (Thank you, John, for doing this!!) Remember, the drawing is always open to everyone, regardless of whether or not you attend the reunion. You do not have to be present to win. The winners who are not at the reunion will have a check mailed to him or her immediately after the reunion. Ticket sales for the will continue until just before the drawing. If you want to sell 50/50 tickets to your workplace buddies, we can send you a page of the tickets in , you can print them off and sell all you want.. Just remember to send the money and the tickets with the address labels to John Dishaw. The drawing is open to anyone (over age 18 probably, just to be legal). The Association Treasurer, John Dishaw, is working to get the best deal he can for the next set. With a minimum order of 100, he wants to make sure we can re-coup our expenses on sales. If you missed out on this one, you won t want to miss the second batch. There is discussion of having dated reunion site coins, to replace the souvenir hats. 5 CHILE, Past Reunion Picture anyone? New Mexican cuisine is a regional cuisine found in New Mexico, reflecting the regional climate and long history as part of the Native American, Mexican, Spanish and United States cultures. This form of southwest cuisine is most popular in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and California. New Mexican cuisine is also very different than the preferred Tex-Mex style of Mexican-American food in Texas and Arizona. One of its most defining characteristics is the dominance of the New Mexican chile in red and green varieties, depending on the stage of ripeness when picked. Other distinctive elements include blue corn, the stacked enchilada, and sopapillas into which honey is added moments before eating. The New Mexico chile, especially when harvested as green chile, is perhaps the defining ingredient of New Mexican food compared to neighboring styles. Chile is New Mexico's largest agricultural crop. Within New Mexico, green chile is a popular ingredient in everything from enchiladas and burritos to cheeseburgers, French fries, bagels, and pizzas, and is added to the standard menu of many national American food chains. In the early twenty-first century, green chile has also become increasingly available outside of New Mexico. When New Mexicans refer to chile they are talking about pungent pods, or sauce made from those pods, not the concotion of spices, meat and/or beans known as Texas chili con carne. While chile, the pod, is sometimes spelled chili, chilli, or chillie elsewhere, U.S. Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico made this state's spelling official by entering it into the Congressional Record. (Wikipedia, January 28, 2012) You can be sure that some Stoddert sailors will be toting home some jars of New Mexico red and green chile to liven up their tables from breakfast to dinner. Whirlwind Plate, 15 inches (diameter), by Cavan Gonzales Photo credit: Aaron Gonzales It s Not Taos, but Alburquerque and Sante Fe will have plenty of opportunities to view and purchase the southwest artwork for which New Mexico has become world renowned There are numerous art museums, including the University of New Mexico Art Museum in Alburquerque and the Georgia O Keefe Museum and New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe. Art Galleries and market shops will be abundant in this art rich region. Taos Pueblo, by Rick Kersten If your tastes run more for history than artwork, check out The Albuquerque Museum. Founded in 1967 to celebrate the history and peoples of the Middle Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico, specifically the Albuquerque area, it is located just east of Old Town Albuquerque in a gleaming modern structure. Learn more about the fascinating history of the southwest through art exhibitions, maps, handcrafts, photos, sculpture and historic artifacts.
