This post-watershed series, which follows three families battling to cope with those difficult teenage years as they are taken on a week-long retreat to Newcastle, Co Down, features additional, unseen footage and shows the struggles experienced by the families in an even more intense way. Here, viewers are given further insight into different aspects of the family s week-long retreat and an even deeper understanding of the many issues they face as they try to overcome their problems. On hand to offer support and advice is the expert Fix My Family team: health and fitness expert Amanda Hamilton, and two clinical psychologists - Dr Rachel Andrew, who works with the teenagers, and Dr Raman Kapur, who works with the parents. After an intense week of team-building, outdoor activities, psychotherapy and soul-searching, can these families build the bridges they need in order to move forward in a more harmonious life? And can both parents and teenagers accept that they both have work to do to repair their relationships with each other? 3 Story Of A Lifetime Six individuals share an extraordinary event in their life with Stephen Nolan in the new series Story Of A Lifetime Story Of A Lifetime, BBC One Northern Ireland, Wednesday, February 20 at 10.35pm In the new BBC One NI series Story Of A Lifetime, BBC Radio Ulster presenter Hugo Duncan talks to Stephen Nolan about experiences which had a profound affect on his life From an entertainer regretting his wild past to a widow reflecting on her present pain, a new six-part series on BBC Northern Ireland sees presenter Stephen Nolan meet a group of people with extraordinary stories to tell. In Story Of A Lifetime, starting on BBC One NI on Wednesday, February 20 at 10.35pm, Stephen joins a different individual each week as they go on a personal journey to tell of a remarkable experience which changed the course of their life. These intensely intimate stories range from heroic to harrowing and from humbling to heart-breaking as some of those featured relive momentous events from years ago and others reflect on their current exceptional circumstances. In the first programme of the series, BBC Radio Ulster presenter and singer Hugo Duncan tells of his battle with his personal demons. An emotional Hugo takes Stephen 3

4 back to his hometown of Strabane, Co Tyrone, to talk about growing up in a singleparent family in the 1950s and 1960s and his later struggle with alcohol as he started to makes waves in the music business in Northern Ireland. Once nicknamed Drunken Duncan, Hugo recalls how his partying lifestyle was once out of control. Now sober for nearly 30 years and loved by many for his BBC Radio Ulster programme and live performances, Hugo reveals how his past and the hurt it caused his family still haunts him to this day. Also in the series Stephen meets Kitty Hart-Moxon, one of the few remaining survivors from Auschwitz who revisits the infamous concentration camp to tell of the horror she experienced there as a child; WWII veteran John Leishman, now in his 90s, who goes back to the beaches of Normandy to remember those he helped save and the comrades who perished there; Kate Carroll, whose husband Stephen was murdered as he carried out his duties as a PSNI officer; Leah Batchelor, a young woman whose life changed suddenly and dramatically when she suffered a brain stem stroke; and former PUP leader and Independent Unionist Dawn Purvis, who tells of her life-changing decision to leave politics and controversial move to the Marie Stopes Clinic in Belfast. Stephen says: One of the things I find the most rewarding in my job is getting to hear from and meet ordinary people who have gone through extraordinary - and often Stephen Nolan accompanies WWII veteran John Leishman to Normandy, France, to hear his Story Of A Lifetime in the new BBC One NI series starting on Wednesday, February 20 at 10.35pm devastating - life events and lived to tell the tale. What we ve been able to do here, which we can t always do on the live programmes, is give these six people a proper chance to tell their personal version of lifechanging events. Not one of these stories is the same but each one is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. It was a privilege to spend time in the company of these people and I think audiences will find their strength and bravery as humbling and awe-inspiring as I did. 5 Departure Diaries In search of a new life elsewhere Departure Diaries, BBC One Northern Ireland, Monday, February 18, 10.35pm Joan and Rhys Yardley from Bellaghy Nearly 25,000 people left Northern Ireland last year in search of a new life elsewhere. Better employment prospects, the recession, house prices and the hope of a better life have convinced many families and individuals to pack their bags. A new BBC One Northern Ireland threepart observational series goes behind the statistics and gets the personal stories of those who are planning to leave, and those that are left behind, the preparation and packing, the hopes and fears and the tearful farewells. In the first Departure Diaries, on Monday, February 18 at 10.35pm, viewers meet the Yardley family from Bellaghy who are in the process of packing up and getting ready to leave the comfort of their community in search of a better life and balance for the family. There are many challenges; their young children will have to find a new school, moving out of their dream home and leaving behind close family. Finding a job is a top priority for newly qualified teacher Heather Kennedy from Banbridge. After applying for numerous jobs, she has extended her search as far afield as South Korea. In the meantime she s heading to America a tough decision for her and those she s leaving behind. In the first programme, viewers also follow the run up to the day when young couple 5

6 Heather Kennedy from Banbridge Ryan Scullian and Sinead McCann Ryan Scullian and Sinead McCann catch a plane to Australia. Being skilled doesn t guarantee a good job at home. A joiner by trade, Ryan has suffered from the downturn in work and believes the best option is to go in search of work, for a year initially, on the other side of the world. His girlfriend Sinead will be making the journey as well, as she too hasn t been able to find a job with huge competition for positions that come up. But it s difficult to leave the comforts of family and friends behind and their families are finding it difficult to deal with the fact that they re leaving and fear that it could become permanent not just a year. Jane Magowan, producer of Departure Diaries said: Leaving home is never easy. Leaving because you feel you have no other choice is really tough. This series tells the real life stories of some of those people leaving Northern Ireland and of the difficult decisions they ve had to make. Every person, every family featured in the series has experienced heartache and optimism in the lead up to departure day and each one has a different story to tell. 8 In the second programme the team are in Ballymoney where local film makers share their films of the town and it s people over the last 50 years, including workers at Ireland s only camera factory in the 1950s, the good buddies of CB radio marching on Stormont in the 1970s and the legacy of prolific local film maker Charlie McAfee. In programme three, Newry is the focal point as Gloria discovers the city s rich industrial past, the heyday of the showbands and the plight of the Newry punks of the 1980s as captured in the films of local amateur film makers and the BBC. And in the final programme Gloria is back in her home town and invites the people of Portadown and Richill to come into the Travelling Picture Show tent and enjoy some remarkable films made by local film makers dating back to 1932 of family life, celebrations for the coronation of George VI in 1938, Sunday school outings in the 1940s, the last days of the steam trains and apple picking in the 60s. Some of the home movies we were given for the series are just captivating, said series producer Jane Magowan, and the oldest piece of film dates back to 1932, Charles Lamb filmed his baby son s first steps at their home in Portadown. Now 82, Charlie Lamb came along to the Travelling Picture Show tent and recalled his father s love of film. The films of William Blake are a touching reminder of family hoidays during the Second World War. There were some real surprises too, such as Ballymoney man William Campbell s film of a CB radio rally at Stormont in the late 1970s or Colonel Tracey s film of the unveiling of a brand new Ferguson tractor in the main street in Augher in the 1950s unpacked from a huge cardboard box to the delight of the assembled crowd of farmers. Each programme was built around the films and stories from a particular town and each one reveals something fresh and surprising about places we thought we knew.
