Get your motorcycle out, check the tires, oil and gas up and let s get on the road and have some fun. We have a lot of rides all through the year, but in the fall when it is cool and the leaves begin to turn, Arkansas truly becomes a motorcycle wonderland. So get ready and let s get out and ride. As most of you know I had my left knee replaced the end of August, not a lot of fun. With that said, I just want to thank the many members and friends for the cards, phone calls, and help through this time for myself and Jean. The response and offers to help, best wishes and just checking up on us have been great! I am truly humbled by it. We have really enjoyed this year with Chapter E and hope that we can soon be on the road riding and enjoying the fun and fellowship with our riding friends. 3 Paris 12 Bikes and 17 people rode to Paris for lunch Thurs. Sept 8. While at lunch, Rick was playing with his phone. Valerie tried to take it away, but Rick hid it. One good thing, playing with his phone kept Rick quiet. Then, Rick lost his glove and went to find it. As he turned around the glove was stuck his back on the jacket. Boy, did that get a laugh! 7 Cliff House We took off at 8:30 am Saturday morning, heading for lunch at The Cliff House-7 bikes, 10 people. As we were traveling up Rt 7 we had several changes of weather. We started out with a little sun. As we were climbing, our ears started popping. At about that time, it started getting overcast. Miles later, it was very very overcast. As we pulled into The Cliff House, Good Ole Mother Nature let it rip. Thunder and lightening frightening. Rain blowing hard and coming down in buckets. We were all hoping that by the time we finished our lunch, the storm would pass.wishful thinking. We put on our Rain Gear and bundled up. We headed out and for 45 minutes we struggled through the haze. At last we saw the sun straight ahead. OOPS-Rt 7 turned right heading into the storm clouds again. Finally, we entered Rt 7 WITH SUN. We stopped at Rotary Ann Rest Area where we all pulled off our Rain Gear. Everyone was glad that we went slow and followed one another closely so we could see the tail lights. We all confessed that the tail lights were the only thing we could see in front of us. You know that nobody enjoys rain. However, EVERYONE ENJOYS THE CLIFF HOUSE Valerie LOVES the new Arm Rests that Don installed. Sylvia is cleaning the Bike, especially the windshield.
Ride to the Cliff House Joe McGannon has not ridden with us in a while. Even with the rain, he enjoyed himself. Dennis wants to make sure he is seen.
Ride to the Cliff House Some Ole Biker Dudes from Arkansas. They were headed North into the storm with NO rain gear. Not a care in the World All these Trikes were custom made with V W engines and parts of bikes from the motorcycle junk yard, according to Don. Just Chillin They just wanna ride
Oct 2011 Thurs night, Sept 17 there was a God & Country Rally. We all met at Wal Mart and then rode about 1/2 mile to the new Flower Shop that just opened. They had a band, speakers and hot dogs. We were all celebrating GOD & COUNTRY, OVER 100 OF US. -JUST TO CELEBRATE
Oct 2011 On Sat Sept 22 we all met at BK for a trip to the Birthplace of Johnny Cash, Kingsland, pop Tom Harrison made NO PROMISES about this ride. He didn t even know where Kingsland was. We had 7 bikes with 9 people. I guess Johnny Cash was popular. You couldn t judge that by his Memorial stand with a little plaque. The HIGH point of the trip was having lunch at the Klappenbach Bakery. And, of course, dessert.
Trip to Cripple Creek Keeslings Trip to Cripple Creek, Colorado 2 weeks, miles We left HSV about 5am on August 4 th and took back roads to avoid interstates to Garden City, Kansas, where our daughter, Tara, lives On August 9 th we again took off and headed for Manitou Springs, Colorado, followed by our daughter in a car. Tara had arranged for us to stay in a 6 bedroom vacation house that belonged to her employer. The house was located in a gated community, but she had given us the address and codes for the gate and garage, since she was going to be a little behind us. We arrived at the house, but didn t find the box to open the garage, however Diane discovered that the front door was unlocked. I went inside and was impressed how nice the home was and how fully it was furnished. Going on into the garage, I also discovered that there were golf clubs and shoes on the shelves. Realizing that Tara s employer did not play golf, we called Tara and found out that she had given us the wrong house number and we were in someone else s home. Quickly departing, after wiping off all fingerprints on the door knobs, we departed to the correct address and hid our trike in the garage. We spent 4 days in Colorado, riding up the Ute Pass and on to Cripple Creek, a historic gold camp town, located in the mountains south of Divide on SR-67. We spent the day up there, loving the cool upper 60 s and lower 70 s temperatures, then rode back down the pass, stopping for a break in Green Mountain Falls, before hitting all the shops in Manitou Springs.
Trip to Cripple Creek We also rode through Garden of the Gods and also up to Deckers, Colorado, to view some of the area burned by the Hayman fire. That fire started on June 8 th, 2002, about 15 miles from where my Mom lived and became the largest fire in Colorado history, burning just shy of 140,000 acres. She was forced to evacuate for 3 days as the fire burned within ¼ mile of her home. We had just left my Mom s that morning, heading back for Kansas, and saw the smoke in the mountains as we neared Pueblo. Yes, the fire was arson, but no we didn t do it!!! When we rode back up to Deckers, we were amazed and saddened to find that after 9+ years there were still no pines starting to re-grow in the burn areas. On August 12 th we headed back to Garden City, and spent the weekend visiting old friends and neighbors, then left for home on the 15 th. For a change of scenery, we headed straight south out of Garden City to Childress, Texas, then cut across Texas, through Wichita Falls, Sherman, and Paris, then cut back up through the corner of Oklahoma to Broken Bow, where we hit US -70 to follow home. All in all it was a great trip, but we re glad to be back home where the temperature has finally started to get back to normal.

Aerobics for Your Brain: Neurobics Steve and Carolyn Cotton Region H Trainers Are you becoming forgetful? Do you have trouble learning new things? Neurobics is a unique brain exercise program based on the latest neuroscience research. There are many simple exercises developed by researchers to help stimulate nutrients that grow brain cells. Instead of utilizing logic puzzles, memory exercises, and solitary practice sessions, neurobic exercises are intended to work with the brain s natural drive to form associations between different types of information. Neurobics uses the five senses to shake up everyday routines to keep the brain younger and stronger. The result: a mind fit to meet any challenge whether it s remembering a name, mastering a new computer program, or staying creative in your work. One area to start may be brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand. This includes opening the tube of toothpaste, and applying the toothpaste to the toothbrush. Styling your hair, shaving, buttoning clothes, eating, and operating the television/stereo remote could be substituted for more variety and similar results. This deceptively simple exercise requires you to use the opposite side of your brain than you normally use. The circuits, connections, and brain areas that are normally inactive for these every day activities are suddenly required to direct a set of behaviors in which they normally don t participate. Research has shown that this type of exercise can result in rapid and substantial expansion of circuits to parts of the brain that control and process information from your non-dominant hand. This is one of the amazing things about riding a motorcycle is it provides a window of opportunity for your brain. Simply opening the windows as you drive your car, or taking your motorcycle out for a drive enables you to experience a tapestry of smells and sounds fresh rain, leaves burning, birds singing, or seeing kids playing. Your brain will begin to search for and recall associations between the sights, sounds, and odors that you encounter during the drive. Riding your motorcycle or opening the windows of your car while driving provides these circuits with more data and sensory input to make more connections in your brain.
Oct 2011 Tom Harrison in 1965 with his hillclimber! He was 19 years old. What a good lookin guy. Continuous Improvement Thomas C. Harrison, Chapter E Educator Chapter E should be proud of the growing attendance we have seen in Chapter rides in the past year. I believe this is the result of consistently conducting our rides in accordance with GWRRA principles and making sure that all participant needs are met. As with most human endeavors, there is always room for improvement. First, I have observed too many instances when a rider has pushed themselves to make a turn when they should have held back because they did not want to break the ride formation. I urge all of you to mentally rehearse that given a quick go-no go conflict, you should error on the side of not going. It is far easier to get a column of motorcyclist back together than it is to reassemble a motorcycle rider. Also, we need to watch our intervals (2 seconds) during a ride. Riding too close will raises the odds of having an accident and riding to far apart make it tough for road captains to keep the ride group together. Chapter E should be proud of how they handled themselves when we had the accident on Highway 7. I was tail gunner and upon arrival at the scene, started down the mental checklist of what should be done since it is the tail gunner (drags) responsibility to control a crash scene. I was pleased to find that the most important things had already been done and that riders had manned traffic control positions at the north and south end of the accident location. I should have made sure that the roadway just opposite the crash scene was clear for at least several car lengths for emergency vehicles. Fortunately my error was quickly corrected without adding to the problem. Technically I should have also requested that all nonessential riders at the crash scene go to a designated safe location where we could later reconnect. In this particular instance, because of the highway configuration and the traffic control that was established, the danger to other riders was very low. My sincere thanks to Tom Templeton for filling in for me last month..it s like having Ted Williams pinch hit for you!!!!!.
Oct 2011 Delegation A few months ago (in the April 2011 By the Book ), I discussed the traits of an exceptional Chapter Director (or District or Region Director). One topic that is worthy of a more in-depth look is delegation. We are all aware of the concept, and the general approach of how this works. Let s discuss delegation a little deeper. When we decide to delegate, we typically approach it from the realization that we cannot do it all ourselves. So, we select things that need to be done and choose people that we think will be successful in doing those tasks. We try to use all that we ve learned about delegation and human interaction to get someone else to absorb those tasks. We ask them, rather than tell them; we compliment them on their skills or talents, let them know how we depend on them, and thank them for their commitment and dedication. When a member of my team approached me with an idea, it was an opening for me to delegate that task to them, because they have already bought in to that idea as being good, and they feel an ownership to see it is done. All of this is appropriate (assuming it is sincere), but let s back up a few steps to the WHY we delegate. There are more good reasons to delegate than just sharing the workload. What about development? Skillful delegation can assist in developing other individuals to become more skilled at a particular task, or to assume more responsibility in the future like becoming the ACD or CD! If these Members are already a part of your team, use them that is why they assumed that position on your team, so give them some things to do! The common pitfall is we can probably do it better and/or faster ourselves. But, this is only true because we were afforded the opportunity at some point to better ourselves. The person that afforded us the opportunity was probably better and faster than we were, but did so for our development. So how can we expect someone to get as good as we are if we never give that person the chance? There is a risk to delegating for development, however. Delegation for development must be accompanied with the appropriate amount of oversight and guidance. The less experience someone has, the more oversight and assistance we should be ready to provide. If we don t provide the appropriate assistance and guidance, especially the first time someone attempts something new, we might unknowingly be setting them up for failure. We must remember, however, not to take over! Let them be responsible for their assignment. The second time this person is assigned that same task, we may only need to be a consultant to them. After executing this task a few times, this person will become quite skilled. We need to entrust this person with the task (i.e., let go), but be there to help to the degree required. A final thought on delegation. There is satisfaction associated with accomplishment. People are typically willing to contribute in an area where they already have skills because they are certain that they will be successful, and hence realize the accomplishment. What if someone is willing to help, but we don t know what his/her skills are? Simple we can let them choose what is delegated to them as it supports our objectives. Then we can use delegation in the best way possible to provide satisfaction to others. A successful Director may not actually do many tangible things herself or himself, but they will be developing their team and providing satisfaction while doing very little. In summary, use your team to help you as the Director meet all the objectives for our Members. By doing that, it will also be helpful to you by preventing your own burn out, while sharing responsibility and preparing your team for future teamwork. Learn Something New Then Teach Someone!
