2 FEB 2008 THE STONE CHIPPER PAGE 2 President's Message Library News Since I did not hear from anyone on the previous idea I wrote about in the Stone Chipper on how to attack our collecting trip access issue, I will have to undertake to see what I can compile on my own. Perhaps someone can volunteer to review it when I have completed the draft document. Please let me know if you are interested. I also did not get any takers for request for people to go to two schools and give a class on various aspects of our hobby; fossils, rocks, and minerals. I doubt I have any time until after Tucson. Speaking of Tucson, the annual World s Largest/Best mineral show will take place from 2/14-17, and I am scheduled to be there for the entire event. I hope to take lots of photos, some video, and should be bringing back books, posters, and maybe some specimens. I am scheduled to join the TGMS, be present at their pre-show meeting, and may possibly get to see and do some behind-the-scenes work as well as attend the annual private dealer s party at a friend s house, and attend the banquet on Saturday evening. I must say I have been looking forward to this for some months. I plan on presenting a talk on the show whenever I can be fit into the schedule by Paul, providing my photos come out. They say the new book that will be available on classic American mineral localities will be a must have, and I know at least 3 members that plan on getting one. Maybe our Library might want to purchase a copy (hint, hint). I finally was able to gain access to the uranium mines on 2/1/ 08, with Paul Bordovsky joining me to help scope out the situation. The next step is to see if we can have permission for the society to have a Saturday field trip there sometime. There were some good specimens to be had, good fluorescence, so all we need now is an ok to do a Saturday trip. Our thanks to the Brazil trip group for a fine and enjoyable (albeit lengthy, but not complaining) presentation in January. The food and drink were most tasty, the specimens very nice, and the stories great. Keep those programs coming, and hope to see you at our February meeting. ~Alan Cherepon, President The Library is continuing to grow. On the table in the library are the few remaining periodicals from the last sale. Prices have been marked down even further. Please stop by and make your selection at the next meeting. Fifty cents each or 3 for $1.00; what a bargain! Let s clear the way for the next sale! Help is still needed in the library. You can have a flexible schedule and no prior experience is needed. We only need a few hours a month, on your own time table. Remember to turn in over dues prior to checking out new items. You must be a club member to check out books. Happy reading. ~Diann Hill, co-librarian Dues are Due! If you haven t yet paid up for 2008, you can bring in your dues to the next club meeting, or send them to the AGMS address, attention treasurer. Refreshments The following generous persons have volunteered to bring refreshments to the next AGMS Meeting: Gene Healy, Linda Northcote, Brian Wetzig, Jim and JoAnn Wiersema. Thanks! NOTE: Please send notices of changes of address or to report errors on the mailing list to: Bob Greenway, treasurer. To get signed onto the AGMS list and/or to receive the newsletter via , please send a note to the editors at StoneChipper@austingemandmineral.org. ~The Editors

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned. ~Pauline Denson, Secretary A Brazilian Adventure January Presentation By Laura Dow Four couples from the AGMS were privileged to go on a tour of Brazil together from late June through July of David and Laura Dow, Mac and Fran Ellis, Robert and Charlotte Morriss, and Les and Susan Postlethwait joined onto a mine tour of about 27 persons, sponsored by the LA Mineral Museum and led by the director, Tony Kampf. They visited the famous state of Minas Gerais where the majority of the wonderful minerals and gems of Brazil originate. These are found in rich pegmatite veins within an ancient, eroded, and magma invaded mountain range in the Southeastern part of the country. The variety of stones found there is astounding and includes aquamarine, tourmaline, topaz, quartz, and emerald to name a few. The group toured the mines and was allowed on occasion, to paw through the tailings to find whatever they could. At one aquamarine mine in particular in Marambia, they astounded the owner and miners alike by actually finding large, beautiful specimens of aquamarine any rock hound s dream! Hastily convened meetings resulted in a fair price for the gem material and it all came home. Of the several pieces found, the Texas Eight managed to find 3 of them. 5 PAGE 5 THE STONE CHIPPER FEB 2008 The localities visited included two emerald mines, two imperial topaz mines (found only in Ouro Preto), a tourmaline mine, and an aquamarine mine. Of course lots of silver picking took place as well. Photos taken by all members of the group were shown of the local geology, minerals, and culture of the region. With few exceptions, the mining operations are manual and low-tech. The soil is generally eroded, soft clays or eroded schist and is easy to dig into. The four couples continued a tour of Brazil after the gem trip ended. They flew to a private ranch in the Pantanal first. This area in Southwestern Brazil is noted for an annual dry spell followed by a long wet season. In the wet season the large shallow basin at the foot of an arc of mountains fills up almost entirely with water. The soil consists of incredibly deep sand. In the winter dry season (when the AGMS group toured), the land dries up into meandering rivers and streams with spotty fresh and saltwater ponds. This leads to a very unique ecosystem with a huge variety of wildlife. This area is referred to as the Africa of South America. Lastly, the group toured Iguassu Falls. This giant waterfall is located at the meeting point of Southwestern Brazil and Argentina and is very close to Paraguay. Millions of years ago when South America was separating from Africa, this land was covered by successive lava flows with differing chemical compositions. This in turn means that the layers have different hardnesses. The falls were originally on the Parana River in Paraguay but have slowly eroded their way upstream into their current location on the Iguassu River. The top layer is harder than the next layer down. The softer second layer is eroding faster than the top layer which causes undercutting. This can be seen in the two tier appearance of the falls. Eventually, the harder top layer is undermined enough to collapse, causing the falls to move further back up the river. The end result is a spectacular waterfall. It is second in grandeur only to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Paleo Club News At the Paleo Club meeting on February 19 th at 7 p.m., Rachel Racicot will give a talk entitled, A New Fossil Skimmer Porpoise and Other Air Heads: Sinus and Ear Anatomy in Porpoises as Revealed by CT Data. ~Diann Strout 2008 Exhibitors and Judges Seminar The Austin Gem & Mineral Society, in conjunction with the SCFMS, will host an Exhibitors and Judges Seminar on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 th and 9 th, 2008 at the AGMS clubhouse. Everyone is invited to attend. The fee is $15 to cover the cost of refreshments and printing costs and will begin each morning promptly at 8:30 a.m. Topics to be covered include: preparing a display for exhibiting, AFMS uniform rules for exhibiting, how exhibits are judged, and what makes a good display. Lunch will be provided on Saturday and Sunday for a small donation. There is a refrigerator for personal lunches and nearby restaurants. For additional information and copies of the application form, please go to our website at general@austingemandmineral.org or phone ~Susan Postlethwait & Ron Carman Sunshine Committee Iguassu Falls, Argentina July 15, 2007 Photo by Laura Dow. I have nothing to report this month. Please send sunshine news to Kathleen Howard. After the program and meeting, the tour participants served up food and drink from Brazil. May you one day have your own Brazilian Adventure!

For full text of board minutes, please contact the club secretary, Pauline Denson. ~Editors --Clarify for the Board that the two domains were purchased by the Show Committee, and that they were only pointers to the club web site. --The parking lot weed problem completed for now. --Display cases are finished. --Wood under air conditioner still needs to be painted. --Paul said he has not called or seen the contractor regarding doors but he will call and request a bid on two 36-inch exterior commercial doors with internal hinges, and a bid for a 42-inch door. --Outside lights James Lopez said he and Gef are working on the outside lights, including redoing conduit, rewiring, etc. --Ed Gage has ordered a new arbor, but we are not sure if it has come in. James Lopez said we need three new flex wheels for machine E and corresponding belts. --Susan Postlethwait going to Palmer Events Center on Thursday to finalize electricity, access, etc. Our booth at Fossilmania was a big hit and they want us back next year. Her only expense was paper for the booth. Everything was brought back and stored. --Draft budget proposed to present to membership [see final budget later in this newsletter.] --Diann Hill said that we need to get committee chairs to come to meetings or submit reports. It was suggested that reports at the general meeting and reports by should count toward the required quarterly report. Committee chairs should come to a meeting to get instructions on what their job includes. --Stretch Young suggested that we might get someone to present a program on how to solicit and make donations for non-profits, as the new IRS rules can be confusing. If we started receiving donations from corporations and others we would need to work on getting someone to handle the record keeping for them. Board Minutes Synopsis January 8, Dee Fly said the fence repairs would possibly be done the weekend of January 19, 20, and Dee said the old copy machine does not work and takes up a lot of space. Susan Postlethwait will check on prices for a replacement. --Wood under air conditioner still needs to be painted. --Pauline Denson said that there are hinges made for exterior commercial doors that have a stop that prevents the hinge pin from being removed. Paul, Dee, and Pauline will get contractors to look at the wall and door and furnish bids. --James Lopez offered to work on club saws for $12 an hour. Gef Fisher is in charge of the workshop. Alan will talk to him and suggest that he ask for advice from other members. --Shed needs to be painted and that there is a hole in the floor by the door. Gutters are also needed on the roof next to the shed, and that the painting should be done in March. --Side door needs caulking, and that we need ballasts for one of the fluorescent lights in the cabbing room. Dee will check on 2-foot by 4-foot acrylic covers. --Susan Postlethwait said that the show had to be moved to a new date because the Junior League had reserved the December date for three years in advance, and they take it for a week and half. Our new dates are October This is a permanent move. Our rates are going up because we can only get the large hall this year. We cannot add more dealers if we want to go back to the small hall next year. We will try to take up more space with exhibits. --Susan said we need to move the tables to Georgetown for their show in February. --Diann Hill said that the web site had generated 250,580 hits since June. There were 46,254 in December and 80,454

7 PAGE 7 THE STONE CHIPPER FEB 2008 in November. Seven percent of the people checked the web site as to why they came to the show. --Harriet Streiber and Susan Postlethwait are working on displays for schools. --Joyce Hrapsky said that no classes have been held since October. No one has expressed interest in giving any classes. She may hire someone from outside for a silver smithing class since members are not stepping up to teach. --James Mercier said that he and Gef need to get together and do the work that needs to be done on outside lights. --Ron Carman said he has had little response for the Exhibitors and Judges Seminar. Money needs to be received by February 1 in order to prepare for attendees. --Paul Bordovsky said he might get a trip going to his father s farm in Karnes City. Alan said he would try again to talk to the contractor at the mine there, and also to a friend in Tuscon about getting access to the Cave of Swords. He said they are closing off the cave, but the crystals will still be seen through plexiglass. He said it might also be possible to hunt for geodes there. --We need a new chair for juniors. --We need to replace both Harriet and Diann in the library. --There is no membership committee as such. The tasks are keeping the sign-in book and furnishing nametags for members and guests. --Ron Carman suggested that the meeting before the show should not have a program, but prepare for the show instead. --Refreshments will not be served before and during the meeting, but only afterward. First introduce guests and juniors, and give juniors their prizes so they do not have to stay for the whole meeting on school nights. --Selling items at the general meeting might jeopardize our 501 (c)(3) status. The Board will make it a general rule that there will be no selling at the meetings. Emergency Board Minutes Synopsis January 24, Alan Cherepon asked if the board would approve a stipend to pay for his attendance at the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Show in order to garner ideas for the club. After discussion of the benefits and the precedent that would be set, Diann Hill moved that we do not grant funds from AGMS to go to the Tuscon Show. Ron Carman seconded the motion and it passed. ~Pauline Denson, Secretary

8 FEB 2008 THE STONE CHIPPER PAGE 8 Show Talk The February show committee meeting will be on Thursday the 21 st and will begin promptly at 7pm. At this meeting we will be choosing the show pin. Our show theme for the 2008 show is Gems and Minerals of Brazil. The design part is open to all members of the club. For our newer members this is how it works: a) Create a design that will fit on the show pin, diameter is 1 1/8", b) Submit copy to me, Susan, c) At the meeting I will hand out color copies for all to see, d) We vote. Design with most votes will be it! We will also be picking dates for workshops such as rock breaking, making items for Wheel of Fortune, and of course the ever popular display case repairs! Show Chair Susan Postlethwait with winners of Gem Capers 2007 Raffle Prize Amethyst Specimen December 2, 2007 Photo by Laura Dow Show Chair Susan Postlethwait with Mr. Willingham, winner of Gem Capers 2007 Grand Prize Dinosaur Bone December 6, 2007 Photo by Laura Dow I know that it seems like I am jumping the gun for show stuff but remember, our show is on October 24 th, 25 th, and 26 th. Two months earlier! And speaking on that line, Lynn Young will need some articles on Gems and Minerals of Brazil for the show guide. In order for those articles to appear in the show guide, they MUST be in the Stone Chipper. SCFMS and AFMS rules folks! So I am challenging you scribes, juniors too, to put the pen to the paper and write! We need articles, word searches, riddles, poems, coloring pages, and much more. Last but certainly not least, we need 600 to 700 pounds of tumbled rocks for the show. NO, this is not a typo. The Gem Mine is our most popular event for the kids, neck in neck with the Wheel of Fortune. And we used tumbled rocks in both places! Yikes! I mentioned at the club meeting that we will be doing a Clubs Biggest Tumbler contest. Well, every month I will publicly weigh the tumbled rocks as they arrive and announce who weighs what. At the show, I will announce the Clubs Biggest Tumbler who will then receive something (!) along with the admiration of the entire club! Please join us and see who will be the 2008 Clubs Biggest Tumbler. This event is open to all club members, juniors too! Keep those tumblers tumbling. ~Susan Postlethwait, 2008 Show Chair Thank You Drawing by Madison Willingham, winner of Gem Capers 2007 Grand Prize Dinosaur Bone Show Committee Minutes Synopsis January 17, One complaint about the show was there were not any workshops or speakers for adults. --New dates for 2008 show will be October 24, 25 & 26 and set-up will be on October 23. Held in the front hall, much larger, no access to the two small rooms. Most dealers will be able to make it, two probably will not be back. Ask dealers if they want a 360 o walk around booth or backed up against another booth. --How to allocate Palmer increases in cost. Motion add 5% rounded to nearest $10.00 with 8 amps for 4 & 6 tables and 15 amps for 8, 10, or 12 table booths passed. --Gem & Minerals of Brazil.

9 PAGE 9 THE STONE CHIPPER FEB Lynn Young said that Silicon Labs wants to sponsor all the schools as long as it is directed towards education. --Fluorescent SIG needs to meet to determine if they will have the fluorescent display or not. A room will have to be built. --Wheel of Fortune needs to make some more items. Pauline Denson agreed to be chair. --Gem Mine needs a new Chairperson. Need lots and lots of tumbled stone. --Need more demonstrators but don t offer any payments. --Prices for kids will be 50 cents across the board if they are registered ~Dee Fly, Show Committee Secretary Local Show Announcements Feb Georgetown, TX Williamson County Gem & Mineral Society Bill Medford (512) Feb Pasadena, TX Clear Lake Gem & Mineral Society Mar Big Spring, TX Big Spring Prospectors Club Jerald Wilson (432) Mar Corpus Christi, TX Gulf Coast Gem and Mineral Society Jerrold Simpson (361) ~ S.C.F.M.S. News When you head out this spring on a field trip or any other type of outing that involves federal lands, don t be surprised to find roads blocked by gates or earthen structures and many parks, camp sites, and trails closed. This warning from John Wright s column Words of Caution, is meant to grab your attention. Mr. Wright is the chair of the AFMS Conservation & Legislation Commitee whose job it is to alert amateur collectors of gems, minerals, and fossils to potential legislation that would adversely affect our ability to both legally and easily collect specimens related to our hobby. Increasingly, access to federally owned, public lands has been reduced and the legality of collecting fossils seems to be constantly in question. One way to approach the issue is to lobby Congress and write our representatives. If you wish to be kept up to date on issues affecting our hobby, you should consider joining a group called the American Lands Access Association at or the Blue Ribbon Coalition at ~Excerpt A.F.M.S.
