Sussex Advertiser 09 Apr 1832 At the Petworth Sessions The Quarter Sessions for the Western Division of this County were holden at Petworth, on Monday last, before Samuel Twyford, Esq., Chairman, and a very full Bench of Magistrates, amongst whom we noticed the Earl of Egremont, Lord Selsey, Lord John George Lennox, M.P., Sir C. M. Burrell, Bart., Sir C. W. Taylor, Bart., &c., &c. The calendar contained the names of 12 prisoners for trial, on charges of felony, with a few cases of misdemeanor, which were disposed of as follows:- Jesse Naldrett, George Nayler and William Hampshire, for unlawfully conspiring together, with other persons, and assaulting and forcibly imprisoning for the space of one hour and upwards, Charles Challen, William Boxall and Joseph Trower, Overseers of the parish of Pulborough, with intent to extort money from them. To be Sold by Auction, on the Premises by Mr Chrippes, on Friday, the 22 nd March, 1833 at three o clock in the afternoon (unless in the mean time disposed of by private contract, of which due notice will be given), subject to such conditions as shall then be produced. The long established and well accustomed INN called the SWAN, at Pulborough, with the large detached Market-room, at which is held weekly the largest corn market (by sample) in this part of the country, convenient chaise houses, stables capable of holding 100 horses, walled garden, with a piece of land adjoining called Ferry Mead (partly meadow and partly a garden), containing by admeasurement 1A. 1R. 6P. This eligible Inn, in full trade, is most advantageously situated on the junction of the much frequented roads from Petworth to Brighton, & from Arundel & Bognor to Horsham and London, whilst the extreme contiguity of the navigable river Arun, renders it available for warehousing stores, and numerous other purposes of profit; is in the occupation of Mr Joseph Trower, a most respectable Tenant, under a lease, which expires at Lady-day next, and affords a most favourable opportunity for any person wishing to engage in an excellent Business, or for Investment. Early possession may be had. The Household Furniture, Stock in Trade, and Fixtures, to be taken at a valuation. A most desirable, Compact, COPYHOLD ESTATE of inheritance, called West Mares, with very extensive Right of Commonage; held of the Manor of Nutbourne, at a quit rent of 11s 4d., and Fine, and Heriot on Death or Alienation; and situate in the parish of Pulborough. This Estate consists of a modern built convenient House, Garden, and Orchard, in the occupation of Mr Mills, fronting to Mare Hill Common, a short distance off the Turnpike Road from Petworth, through Pulborough Street to Brighton, with twenty-three Acres, more or less, of arable land, of a most productive quality and light tillage, divided into four enclosures, all contiguous to the house, with a stone built Barn, Granary, Stable, and other Farming buildings, the whole in excellent repair, in the occupation of Mr Trower, of Pulborough; and two Acres, more or less, of the richest marsh land, in hand, lying on the East side of the aforesaid Turnpike Road.
