2 BOWRAVILLE Bowraville, also known as The Verandah Post Town is a heritage township located on the Mid North Coast of NSW and part of the Nambucca Local Government area. Home of the Bowra Dam and bragging rights to the best drinking water in NSW. Bowraville was the centre of the Nambucca Shire and the home of Nambucca Shire Council until the late 1980 s. Inviting hinterland and access to a number of national parks. The Nambucca Valley is halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. 6 annual main street events attracting hundreds of visitors.

5 WHY SOLAR BINS? Paul Gallagher, Assistant General Manager Engineering Services, Nambucca Shire Council, first sighted the BIG BELLY BINS operating in the USA when he was participating in an IPWEA sponsored overseas study tour in Council had commenced a review of the street and park litter component of town services following an internal restructure with the objective being to gain efficiencies in day labour, costs savings and improve waste services to the community. The BIG BELLY SOLAR BINS were initially trialed at several key locations within the Nambucca Shire Local Government area. Residents and visitors alike were very receptive. Bowraville is a popular tourist destination and Council received many requests to attend overflowing waste receptacles throughout the working week and weekend. A perfect opportunity to reduce Council s day labour - four (4) BIG BELLY BINS were installed in Bowraville.

7 HOW DOES IT WORK The compactor works by solar power the sun charges an internal 12 volt battery. Special internal sensors are triggered as rubbish fills up and compaction commences resulting in up to 5 times more storage capacity. Compaction force = 570kgs It sends an and text to desktops and smartphones when the bins are 85% full. Eliminates overflowing bins, weekend collections and birds and vermin scattering rubbish across streets, parks and beaches. Battery remains charged for up to 12 hours even with no sun!

10 IMPROVEMENTS BY NAMBUCCA SHIRE COUNCIL Original Inter nal Bin Liners The original liners required 2 persons to empty. Council requested a modification for a lift arm extended handle Complies with Work Health & Safety standards Australia Currently being implemented We did it OUR WAY Lift Ar m Extended Handle

11 OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE ACROSS THE SHIRE Average Weekly Collections (Waste) Across the Shire Collections: 11.6% Red 30.2% Yellow 58.2% Green 2.8 average weekly collections per component. Prior to the installation of the Big Belly Bins we did 7 collections per week at some locations.

12 COMMUNITY RESPONSE Visually appealing Increased use of bins by all members of the community The younger generation embraced the technology Less rubbish dropped in the street Less pollution in stormwater runoff Pristine waterways protected Increased savings and efficient use of Council day labour Cost savings directed to other projects in the Community
