2 We are an aspirational organisation and we want to build on our exemplary history and performance. We pride ourselves on presenting international standard art in a friendly context. We believe by providing an engaging environment for our visitors we will bring them closer to the ideas driving contemporary art and culture today. This in turn contributes to the fundamental wellbeing of the people in our city and visitors to our shores. Executive Director James McCarthy 1. Executive Summary In this report we complete another year of excellent performance against our KPI s within tight financial constraints. It is the Trusts belief that the Gallery is a touchstone for contemporary art in Auckland and plays a vitally important role in the cultural landscape of our region as well as New Zealand. Te Tuhi is a contemporary public art gallery that any city worldwide would be proud to support. Te Tuhi is an excellent example of how Auckland is leading the way in creative excellence in New Zealand. By presenting an exciting range of international and local artists within stimulating curated exhibitions, visitors are engaged with arts and culture in a dynamic and friendly atmosphere. In tandem with this we continue to provide high quality education services in the arts with the Nanette Cameron School of Interior Design, Art Today and a range of community art classes. We also employ a full time teacher to deliver the highly sought after education contract with the Ministry of Education (LEOTC) which provides formative arts and cultural experiences for over 4000 South Auckland school children. Free entry to our exhibitions is a fundamental underlying commitment to sharing the best of the world s contemporary art. Te Tuhi sees itself as an important contributor to the continued growth of Auckland's cultural wealth as it continues to work in a unique position between generating high quality cultural product and being a dynamic service provider to over 170,000 visitors this last year. 2. Key business activities/outcomes Te Tuhi has claimed an important place in both the regional and national creative sector by building on a history of rigorous and engaging exhibitions and publications. Throughout the last year we actively promoted youth education in the arts with our delivery of the annual Te Tuhi Youth Art Award and the Iris Fisher Scholarship (worth $5000). We also worked hard to service the needs of the community groups that have regularly hired our facilities for many years. A highlight this year was the award from the Race Relations Commissioner for contributing to race relations in NZ with our exhibition "What do you mean we?". This show presented artists whose work explored prejudice. Kalisolaite Uhila (NZ) and Rangituhia Hollis (NZ) who were the two New Zealand artists in this international line up, produced new works that were some of their strongest work to date and sat comfortably amongst the international artists participating in this exhibition. This year we also instigated and supported two major new works from senior New Zealand artists which was the result of two years development work. One of these is with Derrick 2 P a g e
3 Cherrie who is the Head of Elam School of Fine Arts. He produced, with the assistance of Auckland University research funding, a 7 ton outdoor sculpture and 4 indoor works. Gregor Kregar s Dream House Project has been a huge success with the public and also the Elm Park Primary School who were involved in working with the artist to create an accompanying exhibition of 300 dream houses. Gregor s work consists of 5 tons of recycled timber from the Auckland Waste Management Centre. Two visionary women from this organisation s past and present, Iris Fisher and Bev Smaill, were honoured by His Worship the Mayor in the naming of two of our galleries. Along with the Mayor Len Brown joining our Board for the afternoon of celebrations were Councillors Dick Quax and Richard Northey as well as Local Board members Adele White and Shirley Warren. This was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with people whose involvement since the late 1960 s has contributed to shaping what Te Tuhi is today. Highlights in this period include Pakuranga Arts and Cultural Trust are once again proud of this year s achievements 170, 376 visitors to the Centre Naming ceremony -celebrating our women with vision Record number of applications for the Te Tuhi Youth Art Award Gregor Kregar s Dream House sculpture project and Derrick Cherrie s Landshaft sculpture Gained external funding for free school buses and facility upgrades Produced the Te Tuhi Carnival 2000 visitors in one day Received an award from the Human Rights Commission for our exhibition about prejudice Received TV3 nightline overage of Kalisolaite Uhila performance Maintained free access to high quality arts Each visit equates to $3.11 in council funding 3. Financial Performance PACT remains a strong model of mixed revenue generation for an arts and cultural facility within this country. It works to balance the objectives of the Deed and the need for financial viability. Te Tuhi continues to raise over 50% of its operational funding, more than matching the contribution by the Auckland Council. We note that we continue to remain an ongoing viable entity against rising costs. PACT came into auditing alignment of a public entity by adopting the international standards of accounting (NZ IFRS) last year. (See attached) CCO s are required by section 69 of the Local Government Act 2002 to comply in full with GAAP this requires preparing financial statements in accordance with NZ IFRS. 3 P a g e
4 Due to the size of PACT we are still able to apply all the differential reporting exemptions available under NZIFRS. The presentation of the Statement of Financial Performance will change slightly to comply with NZIAS 1 and will now be renamed Statement of Comprehensive Income Degree of alignment We continue to meet with senior Council members to ensure we are working in the same direction. We will continue to work with the Local Board in a capacity that is open in nature while ensuring the deliverables of our contract are kept in focus within the resources of our team. 4. Other matters Te Tuhi has some interesting projects coming up that have been the fruit of a couple of years ground work. Also we continue to look at other ways to generate income that builds and potentially will contribute to the arts in Auckland. International heavy weight conceptual artist Santiago Sierra has collaborated with Te Tuhi to present a global artwork. This will be Te Tuhi s contribution to the Auckland Festival in International art magazine Artforum will be listing our current show under Critics Picks on their website Te Tuhi is currently looking at opportunities to increase its revenue generation in alignment with the objectives of the Trust. 5. 5 Expenses Funding of Te Tuhi Contemporary Art Trust 495,000 Audit Fees 6,735 Insurance 3,902 Depreciation 73,130 Repairs and Maintenance 2,000 Interest 51,051 Other Expenses 4,000 Total Expenses 635,818 Net Deficit -$2, Specific Summary of Performance (as defined in Schedule 5 of the original contract) *Note evidence for all these figures was submitted and checked as part of our public entity audit this year 1.1 Total Number of Visits (Annual Target: 150,000 visitors). During the period of 1 st July 2011 to 30 th June 2012 there were visits. This figure represents 113% of the annual target of 150,000. (This has been measured since September 2001 by an electronic door counter on both major entrance points to the centre. Staff movements are accounted for and are not part of visitation figures.) 1.2 School Programmes Participation (Annual Target: 4,000 participants). During the period of 1 st July 2011 to 30 th June 2012, 4559 students visited the centre and/or participated in a school programme taught by the Te Tuhi Schools Programmes Coordinator. This figure represents 113% of the yearly target of 4,000 participants in the Te Tuhi School Programmes. 1.3 Classes / Programmes (Annual Target: 130 classes). During the reporting period 1 st July 2011 to 30 th June 2012 the cumulative total is 724 classes. Art Classes ( Adult and children) Art Theory classes Interior Design classes This figure represents 556% of the yearly target of 130 classes. 1.4 Exhibitions: (Annual target: 18 exhibitions). During the 1 st July 2011 to 30 th June 2012, 20 exhibitions were held at Te Tuhi: This figure represents 111 % of the yearly target of 18 exhibitions. 1.5 Public Forums / Lectures: (Annual Target: 15). During the 1 st July 2011 to 30 th June 2012, a total of 21 Public Forums / Lectures were held at Te Tuhi. This figure represents 140 % of the yearly target of P a g e
6 1.6 Performances/ Productions/Concerts (Annual Target: 6). The year to date 1 st July 2011 to 30 th June 2012 a total is 12 concerts / productions / performances took place at Te Tuhi. This figure represents 200 % of the yearly target of Customer satisfaction with provision and availability of Arts Facilities and Cultural Programmes (Annual Target: 85% satisfaction). The year to date 1 st July 2011 to 30 th June 2012 we have achieved 85% good or better in a range of regular surveys including teacher evaluations and class surveys. Regular evaluations have been carried out for specific programme areas, such as schools and classes programme and users. In this period teachers are asked to feed back about the learning environment. Thus far this term no one has expressed disappointment in the feedback forms therefore 100 % of respondents expressed either excellent good or very good satisfaction with the schools programmes in which their classes participated. (This evidence was submitted as part of our BDO public entity audit this year) 1.8 Statutory Compliance. Te Tuhi is currently meeting 100% statutory compliance. The entire centre has a current Building Warrant of Fitness. The centre contracts an Independent Qualified Person (IQP) to carry out regular checks for: means of escape, emergency lighting, emergency signage, evacuation plan, and fire fighting equipment, as is required by regulations. Te Tuhi café, while not directly operated by PACT, has an A rating from the Auckland Council. 1.9 Building maintenance.. Maintenance in this period includes: Window and carpet cleaning. Door servicing. Men s public toilet painted. The cafe fridge has required maintenance Air con unit replaced in studio two as it ceased functioning. Cafe dishwasher repair Roof repair Door maintenance Men s toilet repaired - gallery end Grease trap clean New tap for cafe Studio 1 taps repaired Any problems relating to achieving the targets in Schedule 5 To date, no problems have been identified nor encountered. Specific problems or issues None Annual audited accounts The Pakuranga Arts and Cultural Trust annual audited accounts year ending 30 th June 2012 are now complete. A copy has been sent to the CCO monitoring department. 6 P a g e
7 Details new programming initiatives Santiago Sierra, a Spanish artist who has recently shown at the Tate Modern, has worked exclusively with Te Tuhi to realise a global artwork. This will be exhibited in March 2013 as part of the Auckland Festival and will represent the most important international show of ours to date. The work will tour globally and Te Tuhi will be the second venue following Melbourne. Progress with Asset Development Programme The Pakuranga Arts & Cultural Trust (PACT) is holding and accumulating money for asset development and replacement. Major maintenance issues that may affect future programming No major issues identified. Partnering We are actively working with other legacy CCOs to form closer strategic ties to Council and share networks and experiences. Our Director worked to establish the Creative Coalition which brought together a wide range of arts organisations across the city and he continues to support its endeavours of constructive engagement. Other events and organisations we have partnered with: South Side Arts Festival Out East Festival Te Papa - workshops Museums Aotearoa Bert Crenca from USA workshop Ministry of Education LEOTC Elm Park Primary school Dream Houses project Auckland Festival planning for major contribution to visual arts section of programme.
