2 Introduction It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 35 th Airline/Air Traffic Services (ATS) Safety Forum at our new venue, the Sofitel in Brisbane. This two-day event brings together aviation safety specialists, safety managers, operational managers and pilots with safety portfolios from across the Asia-Pacific region. We are fortunate to have a variety of delegates from international, domestic and regional airlines, as well as aviation specialists from air navigation service providers, airports, industry agencies and associations. I am excited to be exploring an exciting and prominent topic this year and looking at the range of new users that will eventually utilise Australian airspace, and how we can manage these as an industry. This includes workshopping the risks associated with these new entrants, but also how we can encourage this emerging trend in aviation. We are fortunate to have a number of expert speakers who can talk to this theme from a variety of backgrounds, including air traffic control, airlines, government agencies and aircraft manufacturers. Their knowledge and experiences, combined with your opinions and suggestions, will ultimately make an impact on the safety of our industry and the travelling public, which is why Airservices continues to support and facilitate forums such as this. Crucial to the success of this forum is developing and delivering on actions and making an impact to the industry. I am pleased that my team is continuing to work with the industry to enhance safety, based on the outcomes and actions from previous forums. Some examples of this are; working with industry on enhancing runway safety, collaborating on safety communication and promotion, reducing the risk of callsign confusion and sharing data to reduce the risk of go-arounds. All of this work are outcomes from the last Airline/ATS Safety Forum and I am excited to see the outcomes of this year s forum. I thank you for your attendance and encourage you to take the opportunity to network, collaborate, learn and participate over the next two days. Rob Weaver Executive General Manager, Safety and Assurance Airservices 2 35 th Airline/ATS Safety Forum

13 Ben Cureton Air Traffic Controller Airservices Ben has always held a close association with the aviation industry since he was a young boy, with two airline pilots in the family. His one year old son is now showing an obsessive fascination in overflying aircraft and if that interest continues to hold, Ben will likely be working for a long time yet to pay for future flying lessons! After graduating with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Ben made the rather illogical career jump to air traffic control in 2008 and has not looked back. In his current role, Ben works the enroute sectors between Gosford and Coffs Harbour, encompassing the busy Sydney to Brisbane/ Gold Coast jet corridor and RAAF WLM operations, as well as international traffic arriving and departing Sydney to the East for New Zealand, South Pacific and North America. Ben enjoys the dynamic nature of ATC and finds it especially rewarding to see his team come together during weather to ensure safe operations despite the increased complexity of the traffic picture, working closely with RAAF Williamtown and Sydney Terminal Control Unit controllers in doing so. Over the past three years, Ben has overseen the training and licencing of controllers in his unit and has enjoyed being able to mentor new recruits and issue them with their initial ATC licence, a significant milestone and the beginning of a rewarding career in aviation. Ben is also involved with the OneSky project as an SME for High Density Enroute operations. Ben believes that much can be gained from pilots and controllers facilitating a better understanding of each other s roles and limitations and that safety data-sharing between airlines and ANSP s is key to improving safety outcomes. 35 th Airline/ATS Safety Forum 13
