OTTAWA - Of the six engineers elected to Parliament in the October 19 Canadian general election, one was appointed to Cabinet on November 4. Marc Garneau, P.Eng., MP (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Westmount), was given the transportation portfolio by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Eleven Ontario MPs selected for cabinet positions. 3 KINGSTON MPP ACKNOWLEDGES ENGINEERS IN ONTARIO LEGISLATURE Sophie Kiwala MPP (Kingston and the Islands), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, spoke in the Legislature about the positive work of engineers on October 28. Ms. Kiwala focused her statement on the Queen s University GeoEngineering Lab simulator, which tests how deep burial of pipes affect longevity. She also thanked PEO for awarding her one of the 2015 PEO MPP Awards and for the work engineers do to make the community safer. Sophie Kiwala MPP (Kingston and the Islands), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, spoke at Queen s Park on October 28 about the positive work of engineers. To read Ms. Kiwala s statement, click here: To watch the footage, click here: PRIME MINISTER MEETS PREMIER AT QUEEN S PARK Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne MPP (Don Valley West) at Queen s Park on October 27. The two Liberal leaders spoke for half an hour before issuing a joint statement. Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Wynne agreed to be active partners in addressing the Canada Pension Plan and the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan, infrastructure, climate change and a variety of other topics. We look forward to a new and positive relationship between the new government of Canada and the government of Ontario, one based on mutual respect, common goals and shared values, they said in the joint statement. 4 PEO PRESIDENT TO HOST THREE MORE TOWN HALLS ON THE ELLIOT LAKE RECOMMENDATIONS PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., is hosting a series of Town Halls across Ontario to discuss the Elliot Lake Commission of Inquiry recommendations. PEO Past President Annette Bergeron, P.Eng., Chair of the Continuing Professional Development, Competency and Quality Assurance (CPDCQA) Task Force and PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., are joining Mr. Chong at the meetings. They will provide an update on the plans for a PEO Specialist Designation and the work of the Continuing Professional Development, Competence, and Quality Assurance Task Force. This program exists to let MPPs see the work that PEO and professional engineers do and how they contribute to the public interest This event will be held at Dillon Consulting Limited in Kitchener, which is a consulting organization that guides clients in applying science, technology and management in community, facility, environment and infrastructure projects. Also participating will be Government Relations Committee Consulting Engineers of Ontario Representative Bill Allison, P.Eng., and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) Political Action Network (PAN) Representative Andrew Bauer, P.Eng. The symposium is an event jointly organized and sponsored by PEO, Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT), and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Also participating in the event were over 30 engineers, including PEO Peterborough Chapter GLP Chair Dan Demers, P.Eng. Mr. Rinaldi, who has a long time relationship with PEO s Northumberland Chapter, spoke about the government s commitment to support the aviation industry in Ontario. 6 PARLIAMENTARY ASSISTANT TO SPEAK AT TWO PEO DECEMBER EVENTS Arthur Potts MPP (Beaches-East York), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, has agreed to speak at the East Toronto Chapter Licence Presentation Ceremony on December 2. The licence ceremony will be held at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, starting at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Potts will deliver a motivational speech and help present some of the licences at the ceremony. Seventy-five participants are expected, including PEO Councillors and Chapter members. Twenty-five new engineers from PEO East Toronto Chapter will receive their professional engineer (P.Eng.) licence. Mr. Potts will also be speaking at the PEO Government Liaison Programs Central Regions Academy and Congress on December 5 at PEO headquarters in Toronto. Mr. Potts will discuss ways that professional engineers can better work and build relationships with their MPPs. Forty chapter representatives from throughout the GTA and Central Ontario are expected, many who are responsible for the Government Liaison Program in their Chapters. Hosting the event will be Oakville Chapter GLP Chair Jeffrey Lee, P.Eng., and East Toronto Chapter GLP Chair Harneet Panesar, P.Eng.
