As we kick off the MEM summer issue, we thought we would start with a fun tribute to Canada s 150 th Anniversary with some interesting facts about this amazing country we live in. 3 P A G E 3 MPI Toronto Education Conference This past May, MPI Toronto hosted their final Toronto Education Conference at the JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa. It was a jam-packed three days, shared among some of our closest MPI Toronto friends and was one of the best TEC s I ve had the opportunity to attend. Themed Learning with a View, the conference lived up to it s expectations as it was situated in beautiful Muskoka. Although this is the last year for TEC as we know it, MPI Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal chapters are collaborating to bring us The Event and I m sure that all we know and love about TEC will only be enhanced by the partnership and broader reach of these three chapters moving forward. A few of the 2017 TEC Highlights include: Engaging keynotes and general sessions Continuing education credits Entertaining extra curriculars such as games night; Battle of the Bands lip sync contest; and a campfire with s mores Early morning fitness activities such as yoga or a guided nature walk Town Hall, an opportunity to openly discuss our industry pet peeves and gain better understanding on either side Stay tuned for more details about The Event which will be in Ottawa in April of next year. Cranberry Golf Resort: Currently is undergoing significant renovations to the hotel, and can hosts groups up to two hundred guests in their William Watts Ballroom. Living Water Resort and Spa: This newly-constructed 150-room resort is situated on the waterfront, with convenient access to watercraft rentals at the Cranberry Marina. Guestroom configurations consist of seventy-five Deluxe rooms with two Queen beds, and seventy-five one-bedroom suites with a King bed and full kitchen. Conferences of up to two hundred and twenty guests can be hosted at the nearby Bear Estate, which is a stand alone venue on Georgian Bay. The Living Shore Spa is onsite and is the only spa in Ontario to offer the Aquapath Treatment. Lakeside Seafood and Grill: Located in the Living Water Resort, has a private dining room for up to twenty guests, and a presentation kitchen for up to twelve guests. The Cranberry Golf Course is an 18-hole championship course. There is additional meeting space with a capacity of sixty-four guests located on the course. 5 P A G E 5 P A G E 5 Industry Update The demand forecast for Canadian hotels will continue to be strong and according to the Conference Board of Canada, here are some of the leading factors: The weak Canadian dollar will continue to work as a disincentive for Canadians to travel abroad and domestic pleasure travel is expected to grow by 3.4% in 2017 On top of the 9.5% growth in overnight visits from the U.S. witnessed last year, a further 5.3% increase is expected in The strongest growth this year is expected from Mexico at 28.3% due in part to Canada lifting Mexico s visa requirement in December 2016 and the political atmosphere in the US. We have seen how difficult it has become to find short-term availability around the world and especially here in Canada. The current upswing has resulted in record growth in pricing in many markets and tightening of venue contract policies. One positive out of this is that hotel owners have more capital to invest in new hotel development and existing hotel renovations saw the hotel real estate market complete $4.1 billion in transaction volume, the second highest amount on record according to Colliers International and almost 70% higher than Here at Meeting Encore, we continue to work hard on behalf of our clients to find the right venue at the right value with fair contract terms and performance clauses. The new section - an 11-storey building accommodating 90 rooms - is barely visible from the street. The original George Stephen House acts as the entrance to the Le Mount Stephen hotel, and is also home to Bar George - the newest restaurant from Oliver & Bonacini. Don t treat a coffee break like just a coffee break, but as an experience for your attendees to enjoy some time away from the meeting with an enjoyable food and beverage experience. Your goal is to impress your attendees, allow them to learn something about the destination and leave a lasting impression. Here are some of the latest F&B Trends: Clean eating & staying health conscious - With the recent addition of nutritional information to menus, attendees, more than ever, are assessing the nutrition percentages in each meal. Healthy choices do not need to be boring food choices as Chefs try to create a variety of healthy ingredient options and educate planners on the awareness of unhealthy processed food. This includes incorporating energy boosting snack breaks with health-conscious choices. Telling the story of the region; Local & Sustainable Destinations should showcase what they are known for. Attendees want an authentic food experience. Offer foods that tell a story of where they are. Attendees are eager to sample locally-produced food options. Based on where you are meeting, it may not always an option to plan a menu that is 100% local so adjust accordingly and use as much local as you can and export only what you must. Beehives and roof top gardens are becoming the norm at venues these days. What better way to feed your attendees but with food that is cultivated at the venue. Customization Just because it is not on the menu, does not mean that you cannot ask for it. Chefs and planners should work together to plan exciting new ingredients to impress your attendees and leave them talking. Incorporate bolder flavours as attendees seem to be have more adventurous pallets these days. It is becoming common for many Chefs to fuse different food trends together to meet the needs of an international mix of conference attendees.
