2 About this directory Dear Reader, The Directory of selected Organisations in the Field of Water Resources in India provides the addresses of government bodies and NGOs in India, directly or indirectly related to the drinking water supply sector (also commonly referred to as the domestic water sector). It includes a reliable contact and resource centre, organisations in the field of decision-making, policy, governance, research and development (R & D), domestic water supply companies. Additionally, a few consultancies, marketing services and development organisations are provided. It is not an exhaustive list. Hence, if you know a potential partner or already have one in the field of water resources in India and whom you wish to be included into this directory, then please inform us and we will update this directory. The aim is to provide organisations in Germany, who are interested in intensifying their cooperation with India, with an initial contact-list of potential partners. Since domestic water is mainly provided by state-government organisations and projects for the public dealing with water resources are controlled by the Government of India, an effort has been made to include the water supply companies of most of the states and other relevant government agencies involved in the drinking water sector. In the field of R & D, most of the main research institutes have been listed. Though the institutes of higher education in India, such as most of the long-established seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), do significant research in the field of water resources, these have not been listed. From past experience, contacts with IITs normally already exist at a person-to-person level, where the respective partners with the sought-after competence have already been identified. In case these contacts do not exist, then a first-step approach would be to write to the head of department (HOD). Usually, the concerned department is the Department of Civil Engineering, whose address can be obtained from the respective institute s website. The recently created IITs (Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Patna, Punjab and Rajasthan) would in future also serve as potential partners. In addition to the IITs, the various National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) also could serve as potential partners, depending on their competence and facilities. Generally and from past experience, establishing personal contacts, gradual improvement of understanding between German and Indian partners, combination of scientific and cultural activities and good communication are some of the key aspects of a successful Indo-German partnership. If or postal communication is

3 not effective, then a telephonic conversation can also facilitate the communication process. Also, different potential partner institutions in India have different institutional facilities, competences and experiences that complement one another. The Riverbank Filtration Network (RBFN) pools scientific research and practical knowledge in riverbank filtration (RBF) with a vision to contribute to a further improvement of the drinking water quality and the reduction of waterborne diseases in India. The RBFN has been actively engaged in RBF activities in India since 2005 (EU-India Riverbank Filtration Network, ; Cooperation Centre for Riverbank Filtration Haridwar (CCRBF), 2007 onwards). The RBFN is a partnership of the University of Applied Sciences Dresden (HTWD), Dresden University of Technology (TUD), Water Technology Center in Dresden (DVGW-TZW) and the water company Stadtwerke Duesseldorf AG (SWD) in Germany, and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) and the water company Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) in India. The main activities of the RBFN are: - to run an information centre in Haridwar to share RBF experience, - to provide technical support to RBF projects in India, - to develop RBF investigation guidelines, - to organise training courses for professionals and to supervise student projects, - and to strengthen Indo-German scientific cooperation in the field of water supply.
