2 Airport Infrastructure GENERATOR TO OVERCOME POWER OUTAGE PROBLEMS Page 2 A new mobile generator installed at -Ardmore Airport will ensure the control tower and runway lights remains active during power cuts. AAL s chief executive Trevor Willcock said that, while power failures were few and far between, the back up system brought confidence in the way the airport deals with adverse events. The generator will kick in automatically within 30 seconds of a power cut, he said. In the worst case scenario, if power cuts off at night when an aircraft is about to land, the lights will come on within that short time. Being on a trailer means the generator can be used to power the airport s sewage plant or other installations should the need arise. WIRELESS NETWORK AVAILABLE FOR AIRPORT USERS The installation of a high speed fibre optic cable to Ardmore s control tower means all airport users will soon be able to access a wireless fibre optic network. Ardmore Airport Ltd s chief executive, Trevor Willcock, said those wanting to tap into the wireless option system would need a receiver set up in their respective buildings. The monthly cost to access the new system would be about $120. AAL would like potential customers to register their interest with the company s office. Spotlight NEW FACE AT ARDMORE AIRPORT S FRONT DESK Melanie Nelson has joined Ardmore Airport Ltd as chief executive Trevor Willcock s new personal assistant and office receptionist. Melanie, a Drake International contractor, gained insight into the job when she was temporarily assigned to the airport s front desk while AAL sought a fulltime replacement for Niqui Taylor. She liked the job so much, she applied for it... and got it! A mother of two, a girl aged 13 and a boy aged 12, Melanie is no stranger to aviation. Her husband Aaron is a flight service Melanie Nelson manager with Air New Zealand, her father gained his private pilot s licence some years ago and she s attended several New Zealand Warbirds open days at Ardmore. Raised in Papakura, Melanie has spent most of her working life in banking. Appreciating the variety her new front desk role brings, Melanie said: It is like a little community here and I like meeting people. I think this job is made for me. It will be a bit of a learning curve but I m looking forward to it. Niqui has moved on to a new challenge.

Working out of Mondo Travel s Mt Eden office, David will visit the airport regularly to offer travel advice to prospective clients thinking about heading off over seas for a time. AAL s chief executive Trevor Willcock said: He s a very experienced operator and we as a company use Mondo Travel for all our travel and accommodation arrangements. He specializes in group tours and bookings for events such as air shows. Having started his career in Britain in the early 1980s with Contiki Tours, David has been involved in the travel industry for more than 35 years. After returning to New Zealand in 1986, he had stints with travel-related companies in Henderson, Central Auckland, Ponsonby and Remuera before linking up with Mondo s Mt Eden enterprise. At a recent Auckland gathering of the Skal s club, a worldwide club for people associated with tourism and hospitality, Trevor mentioned Ardmore Airport to him and how some people working there had no luck finding a travel agent willing to organize trips to air shows in the United States. Their mutual germ of an idea became a reality. David said: The idea is that I base myself at Ardmore for a day every now and then and say Here I am. If you want to talk to me about travel, including group stuff, I am here. If you cannot come to me, I can come to you. I m doing the same thing for retirement villages around Auckland. And David does have an interest in flying. He did about 10 hours of flight training at Ardmore before heading off on his OE. Other things mean I never pursued getting a private pilot s licence, he said. A helicopter licence is still at the back of my mind though. We have a tanker loading facility for our mini tankers which is solely for bottom loading. Airside we have the pumps for avgas and jeta1 for those who do not want to use the tankers.

Opened in early July, the unique $1.2million project in Harvard Lane has centralized the supply of avgas and jeta1 fuel for aircraft using the airport. George Hoskins, managing director of Ardmore Sky Station Ltd which contracts to Z Energy to run the facility, said the modern, computerized compound made refueling a lot safer and more efficient. We have a tanker loading facility for our mini tankers which is solely for bottom loading. Airside we have the pumps for avgas and jeta1 for those who do not want to use the tankers. Lit up at night, the new station is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for those who want to top up after normal hours. George, who has been running the Ardmore Sky Station for the past eight years, said the modernized station was the result of Z Energy managers asking him what improvements could be made at Ardmore in the wake of its Shell installations being rebranded. Among those at the New Zealand Warbirds clubrooms for the station s official launch were five senior Z Energy representatives from Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington. 6 Page 6 News Items PACIFIC TALES BOOK LAUNCHED AT WARBIRDS ROOMS Friends remember adventurer John Walton The New Zealand Warbirds Association s clubrooms proved an appropriate setting for the launch of a book featuring John Walton - one of the most entertaining and irascible characters ever to pilot an aeroplane. About 70 of John s friends, family and Ardmore flying mates packed the venue to tell stories about him, laugh at his more outrageous exploits and wonder why, at the age of 63, he was taken from us last year in a South Africa flying accident. Among them were his daughters Tina, Jo and Karina and son TJ, sister Joan and brothers Eric and Roger. His old friends included Harry Gallagher, Randal Lockie, Dennis Thompson and Graeme Kennedy, author of the book More New Tales of the South Pacific. One of the chapters in Graeme s publication is a 3000-word tribute to John s unforgettable life and times aptly entitled The Adventurer. John Walton After working initially as a builder in South Auckland, John learned to fly with the Manukau Flying School at Ardmore when he was in his twenties. Having gained his commercial license in the mid-1980s, he began flying a Cessna 206 between Nadi and Kiribati for what turned out to be an unsuccessful crayfish export business. He later served as first officer on de Havilland Herons for Air Tungaru before that carrier became Air Kiribati. Graeme, a newspaper journalist specialising in aviation and the South Pacific for more than 30 years, first met John in an Apia bar when the writer visited Samoa for the first time in Graeme was there to interview the legendary Aggie Grey for a three-part series about her life for the Auckland Star on her 80 th birthday. That series forms part of More New Tales of the South Pacific. Continued

Page 7 Graeme and John got on famously and became close friends. After John moved to Tonga to set up Ca Bella, Graeme became a regular email recipient of his dreadful jokes.

He then purchased a Harvard, learned to fly the aircraft and joined the Warbirds Club for excitement, adventure and comradeship.

In 2007 John bought a splendid home near Ardmore and a hangar in the airport s Starlet Lane for his Cessna 180. He then purchased a Harvard, learned to fly the aircraft and joined the Warbirds Club for excitement, adventure and comradeship. Graeme, who turned his hand to writing books four years ago, compiled two small volumes entitled New Tales of the Graeme Kennedy and John Walton s daughter Tina South Pacific in 2011 and 2012 both of which were selected to represent New Zealand Literature at the 2013 Frankfurt Book Fair. They comprised stories gleaned during his wide travels and included Guessing Your Way In, an entertaining excerpt set on the islands of Wallis and Futuna, starring Harry Gallagher. In a revised version this year, Graeme combined the two volumes and added several other tales, one of them The Adventurer. The result is a 180-page, 13-story book. Copies of More New Tales of the South Pacific are available at the Warbirds shop and through amazon.com as an e-book, hard-copy paper back format, as well as black and white or full colour illustration versions.
