2 History of Ingalls Harbor Ingalls Iron Works was originally established in 1910, by Robert Ingalls, in Titusville, Alabama, and grew to be the largest steel company in the region. The shipyard in Decatur, Alabama, on the Tennessee River, was started in As WWII approached, the yard s small size forced Ingalls to look for a bigger site, first in Birmingham, Alabama, then in Chickasaw, Georgia, and finally in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Ingalls shipbuilding interests were sold to Litton Industries in 1961 then to Trinity Industries in Trinity closed the Decatur yard due to inspections that revealed the yard s facilities were outdated and would require significant capital investment. Trinity opted to shut down the yard, ending 44 years of shipbuilding in Decatur. In 2001, the Decatur-Morgan County Hospitality Association voted to self-impose a room occupancy fee, the proceeds of which would be used for tourism product development. With funds generated from this self-imposed room occupancy fee, Ingalls Harbor was built and rests on 27 acres on the south side of the Tennessee River. Ingalls Harbor has quickly become one of the best launch sites in the nation, attracting many nationally-acclaimed sport fishing tournaments each year including the Bassmaster Elite Series, Wal-Mart FLW Series, American Bass Anglers, and Bassmaster Weekend Series. Construction began in the summer of 2011 for the new entertainment pavilion at Ingalls Harbor. The 27,000-square foot multi-purpose pavilion more than doubles the city s capacity for hosting large gatherings and opens up the opportunity for even bigger and better things for Decatur and Morgan County allowing the River City to continue to attract national tournaments as well as additional family-friendly activities, corporate events, expositions, outdoor shows, art exhibitions and festivals. BASIC INFORMATION 27,000 square feet 23,000 square feet of multi-purpose space. 4,000 square feet of support and service areas. Can accommodate up to 1,200 people. 19 ft by 12 ft conference room available. Men s, women s and family bathroom facilites. 202 parking spaces; 7 ADA spaces Outdoor patio with fireplace. MULTI-PURPOSE FACILITY 15 over head doors (11 ft wide by 14 ft tall) can allow the space to be an open air facility. Close the doors, and the space will become a closed facility. Tractor trailer access is provided for larger staged events. Facility is designed to accommodate large entertainment attractions. Multi-purpose space is heated. Space also contains three large rotary fans for air circulation. There are three large working stone fireplaces. Complete audio-visual capabilities are provided. 32 speaker audio system. Remote control systems. Spatial use can be adapted from a family reunion picnic to a BASS weigh-in, from a live band concert venue to a black tie gala. Its only limit is the imagination. SUPPORT AND SERVICE AREAS Complete heated and cooled restrooms and storage areas. Large commercial grade catering kitchen. Air conditioned management office and conference room areas. AESTHETIC The exterior is a mixture of glass, timber, stone and steel. It has a certain refined, rustic feel that continues a pattern established by the City of Decatur in their new, state of the art recreation facilities. The two massive stone fireplaces bookend a porched wrapped lodge building. The overhead doors are glass and allow light to pass through, even when closed, timber framing is used at the porches. The actual timber, old growth heart pine was reclaimed and reused from one of Decatur s more historic buildings - the Bailey-Robinson Building. These timbers were in the Bailey-Robinson building for over 100 years. The interior of the building has smooth finished concrete floors with high arching open ceilings. Multiple roof dormers provide open light from above. The main structure is exposed and designed to give an industrial effect that relates back to the previous history of the Ingalls site as a ship building facility. Carnegie Visual Arts Center The Carnegie Visual Arts Center is housed in one of Decatur s most significant historical buildings, the former Carnegie Library. The arts center hosts local, regional, national and international art exhibits and offers art classes for all ages. The Carnegie Library building was built in 1904 by millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who helped fund several thousand Carnegie Libraries throughout the world. The Carnegie Visual Arts Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to the Carnegie Visual Arts Center (207 Church Street NE) is free. The museum originated from the private insect collection of John R. Cook, Sr., President and Chairman of the Board of Cook s Pest Control, Inc., and now features an extensive collection of exotic and colorful insects, mounted birds and animals, rocks and minerals, sea shells and coral, including the rare exhibits of both the bald eagle and the golden eagle. The museum, located at Street SE, is free and open to the public Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed from noon to 1 p.m. daily Givens Interpretive Center Located in the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Decatur, the Givens Wildlife Interpretive Center serves as the welcome center for the refuge. The center is one of the South s largest educational centers for the study of waterfowl and wildlife and features a large glass-enclosed observatory overlooking an 18-acre pond. Each winter, thousands of people visit the ice complex, rustic 210 site Good Sam campground, recreation center, hiking / biking trails, open-air prayer chapel and picnic areas. Point Mallard, located on a peninsula on the Eastern city limits of Decatur-Morgan County, is open 365 days per year. J. Gilmer Blackburn Aquatic Center Featuring America s first wave pool, the J. Gilmer Blackburn Aquatic Center plays host to over 130,000 visitors every summer. The park includes four water slides, Olympic-sized pool, diving pool and sandy beach. A special kids area includes the Squirt Factory and Duck Pond. The center is open seasonally from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Ice Complex Year-round ice makes cooling off in the summer a nice treat at Point Mallard s Ice Complex. The facility is open to the public during weekday and weekend afternoons, as well as Thursday through Saturday evenings. Ice Skating classes and lessons are offered. Campground The Point Mallard Campground has 210 camp sites nestled on 25 wooded acres. The Good Sam Park campground is full of amenities including three covered pavilions with restrooms and showers, enclosed meeting facility and kids playground. The site is within walking distance of Point Mallard s many attractions. softball and baseball pitching machines, with speeds ranging from 40 to 70 mph for baseball, and slow speed and fast speed pitch for softball. The Strike Zone is open seasonally. Recreational and Sports Facilities Point Mallard offers quality recreational and sports facilities. The park s tennis center features 12 championship hard courts, 4 championship clay courts, two indoor hard courts, and a fully-stocked pro shop. The park also has a 3-mile hiking/biking trail, baseball fields, sand volleyball area, a soccer park, and bank fishing along the Tennessee River.
