2 Setting the Scene he rural township of is situated at the southern entrance of the Blackall Range with the areas surrounding the township being rural residential and rural lands. his regional inter-urban break is a significant feature that frames the township and shapes its identity. Every place has a distinctive character and identity the things a place is known for - that is a combination of the physical environment and the community and cultural activity that takes place within that environment. benefits from a strong heritage character, village atmosphere and a generous proportion of open space in proximity to its centre. We understand the importance of ensuring an overarching narrative for is developed early with the community. A place making master plan for is an opportunity to think about how the character and identity of the town can be enhanced into the future. imeline Connections between history, geography and geology will provide an authentic and original language that speaks to the place and describes the energy of this emerging township Former City of Caloundra undertook the Art, Community & Heritage Precinct Master Planning Project. Mellum Creek In 7 the township was named Mellum Creek, with Mellum thought to be from an Aboriginal word meaning volcano. Rail Line he opening of the rail line between Caboolture and Yandina reinforced the value of the town as a staging point to the North Coast. he township was renamed to after William. Aboriginal Heritage A Cultural Landscape Study conducted for the former Caloundra City Council identified numerous occupation sites within the Glass House Mountains area, including women s birthing sites, and grinding grooves (more than identified) on Wild Horse Mountain and at Rocky Creek, southwest of, along the traditional pathways. hese grooves are indicative of intensive and long occupation of this area by Aboriginal people. 77 he mountains and surrounding area are well known to Aboriginal people in southeast Queensland. he Glass House Mountains are of special spiritual significance to the Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara people, and are important physical markers in their landscape. 9 Local Government Shire of was established as the administrative center of local government (later in 97 the Council Chambers were relocated to Caloundra as City of Caloundra). 6 Industry imber cutters harvesting red cedar, beech, hoop and bunya pine from the Blackall Range brought activity to the township. Isaac Burgess built the first hotel, store and butchers shop. Source: environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/ ahdb/search.pl?mode=place_ detail;place_id= 9 Census population just over.
