3 high point HISTORY A thriving textile industry had also grown throughout High Point during this time, with plants scattered throughout the city and surrounding villages. It was not long before High Point had also garnered the title of Hosiery Capital of the World. In recognition of these influential industries, a four-story chest of drawers (the middle drawer of which holds a dangling pair of socks) was constructed to commemorate the city s worldwide renown. John Coltrane Downtown High Point, 1905 Incorporated in 1859, High Point earned its name by being the highest point on the North Carolina railroad between Charlotte and Goldsboro. The center of High Point emerged where the railroad crossed the Plank Road, creating a thriving center of commerce. World s Largest Chest of Drawers J.H. Adams Inn An abundant supply of wood led to the production of spindles and axe handles, followed shortly by a booming furniture industry. High Point Furniture Company was the first furniture factory in the United States, and realized immediate success. Other local entrepreneurs saw the opportunity in furniture and began their own companies. By 1903, High Point was home to more than 30 furniture factories. Intuitively, the manufacturers of the area established their first wholesale furnishings show in 1909, which today is the largest wholesale home furnishings show in the world. 4 about the high point REGIONAL VISITORS CENTER Furniture shopping is the number one reason visitors come to High Point. To help consumers navigate the more than 50 retail stores in High Point, kiosks at the Regional Visitors Center provide information based on the style and type of furniture carried at each store. Travelers to the region and triad residents alike can experience a venue like no other at the Regional Visitors Center located within the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau. While other visitor centers are city-centric, this center offers information for tourist opportunities in neighboring cities and surrounding areas. Presented in the style of an art museum, 21 galleries engage the imagination with innovative, interactive touch screens, beautiful photography, videos, music and brochures about tourist attractions. The center was designed from the ground up to help visitors coming through the region to plan their trips. Even if High Point isn t the final destination, we re the perfect hub and starting point because High Point is the epicenter of the state s interstate and state highways, says Tim Mabe, HPCVB president and CEO. Travelers can reach most of the major attractions in the state in under two. 8 14 15 Historic Train Depot (Amtrak) With a complete restoration in 2003, High Point s historic train depot is a tribute to the city s legendary beginnings. It was a pivotal location for families arriving and WWII soldiers. Today, it is a modern Amtrak station that maintains every bit of its original architectural charm. 100 West High Avenue, (800) John Coltrane Statue & Marker Visit the 8-ft. bronze tribute to one of High Point s most acclaimed citizens, legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. An alumnus of William Penn High School, Mr. Coltrane is best known for his work with famed trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Corner of Commerce Avenue and Hamilton Street, Mendenhall Homeplace The legendary Mendenhall Homeplace represents the legacy of a community of Quaker tradespeople and farmers who actively opposed slavery, promoted education and labored to create a life of peace and simplicity. A visit will feature a false-bottom wagon that was used to help slaves escape to the North, a 200-year-old Pennsylvania Bank Barn and many other historical finds. As a historic Quaker meeting house built in 1858, the Museum of Old Domestic Life is filled with the items necessary to rural life in a Quaker community. The detailed displays depict cloth making, shoe cobbling, cooking, and farming. By appointment 555 East Springfield Road, (336) John Coltrane Statute 18 The Neal John Deere Tractor and Industrial Museum Linbrook Heritage Estate is home to the Neal John Deere Tractor and Industrial Museum, which displays a collection of rare tractors and industrial equipment. The museum houses twenty-two fully restored John Deere tractors, a large collection of John Deere memorabilia, a restored 1926 return tube boiler from the P&P Chair Company in Asheboro, a 19th century steam engine, antique electrical apparatus, and a rare Otto-Langen engine. All tractors and equipment displayed at the museum have been restored, both mechanically and aesthetically, and are periodically operated in demonstrations held on Linbrook Heritage Estate. 9 19 World s Largest Chest of Drawers As the Home Furnishings Capital of the World TM, it should be no surprise that High Point is home to a 38-ft.-tall chest of drawers.
