South Australia is open to new people, new ideas, and new business partnerships. Background 1 The mining and energy sector will continue to be impacted by a global shift in economic power. By 2030, it is predicted that developing countries will be home to 440 of the world s fastest-growing cities, and be responsible for an estimated 57 per cent of global gross domestic product. The impacts on the industry worldwide will be huge: 1) A significant increase in the world s population will mean a big increase in energy demands, with consumption predicted to grow by 40 per cent by 2030 (compared to 2009 levels). 2) Increased personal wealth in developing countries will also be a catalyst for growing demand for metals. Global powerbases, like China and India, are tipped to remain the biggest consumers of these resources as they deliver infrastructure to support industrial and residential growth. The pressure to find new resources and access reserves previously thought unprofitable will only increase over the long term. And rising demand will not automatically mean happy shareholders; commodity prices will continue to fluctuate, even when demand and prices are high, shareholders will still want lower costs and greater returns on investment. Innovation and operational changes are therefore essential. The challenges are many but so are the opportunities. BHP Billiton, OZ Minerals, Santos and Rex Minerals are just a few of the businesses with a strong presence. South Australia s unique combination of natural assets, expertise and innovation makes it the perfect place for enterprises wanting to push the envelope. Assets: We are naturally rich in high-quality mineral, oil and gas resources: - South Australia has 80 per cent of Australia s total known uranium resources and 60 per cent of Australia s current uranium production - The Bight Basin is emerging as a significant offshore exploration destination with major global producers committing to significant exploration projects. The Bight Basin is of a similar size to the Niger Delta but significantly less explored - South Australia also has world-class iron oxide/ copper/gold deposits at Olympic Dam and Prominent Hill. In total we have 68 per cent of Australia s demonstrated resources of copper and 30 per cent of Australia s copper production - Major deposits of zircon and shale gas. Our regulatory environment is stable. We are business-friendly, and politically low-risk. We have a highly skilled workforce and an education sector with established and internationally well-regarded geoscience initiatives. South Australia is geographically close to developing Asian markets, providing an ideal platform from which to launch, market and sell new technology innovations. Recentlysigned free trade agreements have increased our competitive advantage in the region. But we are not just content with what is in (and under) our backyard; we want to value-add. That is why the South Australian Government is a supportive, proactive, and collaborative government. We are actively seeking partnerships with industry and researchers with the best brains and the finest know-how, wherever in the world they may be.

4 South Australian Government Initiatives PACE (Plan for Accelerating Exploration) PACE Frontiers is the engine room for new resources discovery in South Australia, and the feeder for minerals and energy projects. It focuses on addressing the high investment risk and support needed for mineral exploration. SARIG a secure, online, map-based web application that delivers statewide geological and geospatial data to the mining sector. SARIG is ranked second in the Canadian-based Fraser Institute s list of global geological databases. Copper strategy we are committed to increasing our copper production from 300,000 tonnes per annum to one million tonnes per annum by Geoscientist Assistance Program a salary subsidy scheme that puts skilled and graduate geoscientists into work placements around South Australia. ICT Roadmap for Minerals & Energy Resources South Australia is establishing Adelaide as a national information and communications technology (ICT) hub to service the mineral and energy resources sector with cutting-edge solutions. Remote Operations Centre (ROC) Remote data from Prominent Hill in South Australia s outback is currently being successfully transmitted to a test and trial ROC at the University of South Australia. Oil and Gas Roundtable a body of national and international repute. It has more than 700 members, including companies, Australian and overseas government agencies, research institutions/ universities, and peak representative bodies including non-government organisations (NGOs) and individuals. Mining and Petroleum Services Centre of Excellence a pathway for mining and energy companies, research institutions and South Australian businesses to work together. The purpose is to find solutions that will make South Australia s resources globally competitive. The Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DETCRC) - is seeking more successful, cheaper and safer ways to drill, analyse and target deep mineral deposits. With AU$145 million of cash and in-kind funding from the Federal Government and its participants, the DETCRC is the world s best-supported independent research initiative in mineral exploration. Future Industries Institute offers highend research facilities and instrumentation. The Mining, Engineering and Transport Centre a state-of-the-art training hub. The Australian School of Petroleum one of only a few institutions in the world offering fully integrated teaching and research programs in petroleum geoscience, engineering and management (reflecting the way industry works). Tonsley, Australia s first innovation district (located just a few kilometres from the Adelaide CBD), is where industry, university research and education, vocational training, government, and the community come together to collaborate and innovate. Tonsley is where world-beating ideas are seeded, cross-pollinated, and where they can be brought to fruition. The Tonsley innovation district is the testing ground for new ideas and innovation, for developing efficient and environmentally sustainable mining and energy solutions that can be exported around the world. Emerging success stories at Tonsley include: Radical Torque Solutions - develops and manufactures torque tools and controlled bolting solutions for the energy and resources sectors. The company s Tonsley facilities will be completed by the end of Siemens Tonsley Service Centre - maintains turbomachinery (wind turbines, gas turbines, steam turbines and compressors) for the energy and resources sectors.

5 Case study - Siemens Technology precincts have great potential for industry, government and research coming together... This is what has attracted us to Tonsley (It s) the best example that we can see in Australia for such a technology precinct. David Pryke, Executive Vice President Energy, Siemens International giant Siemens maintenance and repair facility at Tonsley was designed to be fl exible in its production set-up and delivery. So much so, the company s Chairman and CEO Jeff Connolly says it will deliver a 22 per cent faster turnaround with 65 per cent more throughput while using 14 per cent less fl oor space. Plus: The facility will be able to overhaul larger equipment for the oil and gas industries that previously would have been sent offshore. That means the facility is also positioned to attract work from heavy resource states such as Queensland and Western Australia, effectively making it a national service centre for technology and engineering. Siemens vision Siemens commitment to Tonsley and South Australia doesn t stop there. The company is also a strategic partner on the entire Tonsley project, helping establish the precinct as a global model of a sustainable technologies hub. Siemens is excited by the possibilities: Here in South Australia people are already working on projects including regenerative suspension systems, next-generation batteries, innovative electric drive trains and even autonomous vehicle technology. It s that innovative philosophy that has started Siemens in collaboration with a number of local companies and educational institutions on a preliminary exploration of a virtual project using Siemens product lifecycle management software to design the world s fi rst electric restored and re-imagined Charger *. The Onshore Petroleum Centre of Excellence (OPCE) Training Facility a fully simulated environment providing training to onshore petroleum operation and maintenance staff from organisations including Santos, Beach Energy and Senex Energy and their suppliers. Industry can now train workers in a purpose-built centre without the need for costly and time-consuming fly-in and fly-out arrangements. The AU$32.2 million Drill Core Reference Library (due to open in January 2016) will house South Australia s entire collection of drill cores from 120 years of exploration.
