5 Editorial Towards A Common Goal In January 2015, Petrotrin continued to roll-out its five-year Strategic Plan, making firm moves towards ensuring its long term viability in the face of declining crude oil prices and energy projections that prices may not rise above US$60 a barrel in the short to medium term. A price-taker on the energy market, Petrotrin is responsive to market conditions. Current low crude prices and reduced refining margins are expected to have a continued negative impact upon the Company s profit for the fiscal period. In response to this energy market scenario, the Company is executing projects against the solid background of longer term business strategies. Improving the efficiency of its operations and creating continued social and economic value for its stakeholders is critical to Petrotrin s survival, however securing the Company s sustainability and ensuring its continued positive contributions to the national community must be a common goal for all stakeholders. For decades, Petrotrin and its predecessors have contributed towards development. The following are just a few examples: Tax Contributions Petrotrin continues to provide significant annual tax contributions to the national economy Subsidies Petrotrin provides a direct subsidy on the cost of LPG sold on the local market. CSR Through support for businesses, schools and community projects, Petrotrin has also contributed directly and indirectly to the development and sustainability of several communities in south Trinidad. Employment With more than 5,000 employees on its payroll, Petrotrin is recognized as the largest local employer after the State. Petrotrin also provides indirect employment opportunities for thousands more. Today, the responsibility for ensuring the organisation s long term sustainability must not be seen in isolation or as a challenge that Petrotrin must handle independently. Together, as stakeholders, we are Petrotrin and we must work together to strengthen the organization and maintain safe, reliable, efficient and cost effective operations. This unity of purpose is critical if we are to ensure that our common goal (Petrotrin s survival) becomes a reality. In this issue of the PetroConnect- we take a closer look at some of our current strategic projects. The FCCU, Alkylation Unit and Acid Plant were all brought on stream in the month of January 2015 and our E&P operations also started a new drilling project on land. Some of our major projects planned for 2015 were discussed by senior Company representatives at the Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference held near the end of the month. Changes were also made in our Finance Division as we welcomed our new Chief Financial Officer Mr. Ronald Huff. Mr. Huff has extensive experience in financial management in the Oil & Gas industry, with particular expertise in raising capital, project financing and debt restructuring. This expertise is expected to serve the organization well as we manage the current scenario. As we continue to ramp up activities throughout our operations, our Corporate Communications team is working to ensure that information regarding Company projects and activities reaches the employee population in a timely manner. In January 2015, we introduced the Petro Weekly newsletter, an internal communique to support the PetroConnect in bringing up to date news to the wider employee population. 6 Petrotrin participates E&P UPDATE Petrotrin s E&P Profitable in 2014 Petrotrin, in 2014, contributed 53% of Trinidad and Tobago s national crude oil production cementing its position as the country s largest crude oil producer for yet another year. Vice President, Exploration and Production (E&P) Mr. Jamaludin Khan provided Petrotrin s Upstream Update during a presentation at the Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference held in January. In his presentation, Mr. Khan revealed that Petrotrin s crude oil production averaged 45,663 barrels of oil per day (bopd) for the financial year 2013/ These production figures, include the contribution of the Company s lease operators and incremental production service contracts but excludes farmouts. This figure represents just about 53% of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs estimate of Trinidad and Tobago s total crude oil production of 81,000 bopd for the period. Government Take from the Company s E&P Operations for the period was calculated as TT$4,886 million. Petrotrin s E&P operations, spread across southwestern Trinidad and offshore, includes 23 onshore and offshore joint venture partnerships, 24 lease operatorships, seven incremental production service contracts and ten farmouts. The year 2014 was a busy one as Petrotrin pursued the Ministry of Energy s mandate to increase production. In its own operations, the Company drilled and completed 16 wells on Land, which included five primary wells and 11 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) well. Four wells were also drilled in the offshore Soldado acreage. The 6 PetroConnect No. 150, 2 of 2015 Minister of Energy & Energy Affairs, Senator the Honourable Kevin Ramnarine with representatives of the various State Energy Companies in the Energy Pavillion. acquisition of seismic data during the Trinmar Ocean Bottom Cable Seismic Survey was successfully completed near the end of May 2014 and the Company continued drilling and reactivation activities in South West Soldado. A number of projects were also taken by the Company s E&P partners. The year 2015 is also projected as an extremely busy year for E&P. At the Conference, Mr. Khan outlined a number of projects in the pipeline as the Company continues to ramp up its production efforts. In 2015, Petrotrin will continue to strike a balance between implementing asset integrity programmes and increasing production activities. Some major projects scheduled for the coming year include plans to exploit new opportunities from the new data acquired in the 3D seismic as the Company looks forward to deeper discoveries and possible EOR opportunities. Works are continuing in the Southwest and West Soldado Development Project and Petrotrin also proposes to drill 28 wells on Land and eight wells in Trinmar in New steamflood projects are scheduled for commissioning in the Forest Reserve field later this year and new licences are being issued for the Cipero Block and Deep Horizons in Core acreages. With these and other projects scheduled for the coming year, Mr. Khan assured conference participants that Petrotrin is prepared to weather the storm of current low oil prices. He also gave the assurance that the Company s E&P activities will not compromise safe and responsible operations for heightened activity as Petrotrin continues to pursue excellence.

7 in Energy Conference REFINING UPDATE Operating in a Low Oil Price Environment Petrotrin will be focusing its efforts on the elements over which it has control as it forges ahead amidst the challenging low oil price environment. Manager Utilities, Colin Ramesar provided Petrotrin s Refinery Update at the recently concluded Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference. In his presentation entitled Operating in a Low Oil Price Environment Mr. Ramesar gave an overview of the global market fundamentals of the oil industry and the outlook and projections for the short and medium term. He noted that Petrotrin is a price taker and as such has no control over the absolute price of crude oil and its derived products. However, despite this he pointed out that Petrotrin continues to enjoy competitive advantages which include upgraded technology and infrastructure to meet changing product specifications, strategic location to supply premium regional markets, access to costadvantaged local crude oil and flexibility to accommodate Caribbean demands of small multi-product cargoes. Speaking as to how Petrotrin would adapt to the challenges currently faced by refiners worldwide Mr. Ramesar stated that Petrotrin s focus will be on the elements within its control. In his presentation he outlined the key areas of focus: Bringing key process units back online, Improving site-wide asset integrity and reliability, Optimizing all aspects of operations to increase income, Managing operating expenses and Improving organization capability. He further emphasized that Petrotrin s goal to optimize all aspects of its operations is underscored by its commitment to ensure safe and environmentally compliant operations. 8 Key Plants Back in Operation FCCU The Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU/ Cat Cracker) is back on stream. A key process unit at the Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery, the FCCU was out of operation since February 2014 due to low charge availability arising out of turnarounds on upstream units and a fitness for service review of the main fractionator column. It was brought back online on Friday, 2015 January 23 and is currently stable at 20,000 bpd. The Company is now moving to ramp up throughput and review the Unit s operation under design conditions. Returning key process units to service at the Pointe-a- Pierre Refinery and improving plant reliability is one of the major initiatives being undertaken by the wider organization as it continues to target improved refining margins and cash flows with the sale of higher valued finished products. ACID ALKY The C3/C4 Alkylation Unit returned to service on 2015 February 01 in line with the Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) process train and has the capacity to process 10,000 barrels of LPG. This follows the return to service of the double absorption Spent Acid Regeneration Plant (SARP) on 2015 January 22. This plant produces sulphuric acid, the catalyst used at the Alkylation Unit. The capacity of the unit is 300 STPD (standard temperature and pressure, dry). Both units were successfully commissioned without incident amidst several challenges. 8 PetroConnect No. 150, 2 of 2015 FCCU

13 Petrotrin Hosts Water Pollution Permit Technical Session Petrotrin was recently granted a Water Pollution Permit (WPP49/2013) by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) effective 2015 January 02, for its Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery. A team from the Petrotrin s HSE Department led by Senior HSE Specialist (Environmental Compliance) Janice Dookharan and including HSE Specialists Sunil Ramlal, Neeala Mongroo, Allan Deonarine, Crystal Sammy and Ahmad Ali were instrumental in ensuring all information was supplied to the EMA for the issuing of the permit. This marks the third Permit to be issued to Petrotrin facilities, along with the Point Fortin Central Tank Farm (WPP44/2013) and Guayaguayare Tank Farm (WPP42/2013). The Point Ligoure Tank Farm (WPP43/2013) was issued to Petrotrin shortly after, effective 2015 January 06. Petrotrin is the first company in the oil & gas sector to be permitted under the Water Pollution Rules 2001 (amended). A Water Pollution Permit is a licence that allows the permittee (Petrotrin) to continue operations, whilst working towards compliance with second schedule of the Water Pollution Rules. The Permit is valid for a five year period in the first instance. The Refinery Water Permit has six discharge points which all have effluent and stormwater catchment areas. These registered discharge points will now be governed by this Permit. Monthly effluent monitoring would have to be done for each discharge point and during the effective period of this Permit, it is expected that Petrotrin would achieve full compliance by Monitoring and analysis will also be required for four instream monitoring stations (IMS) along the Guaracara River and five coastal nearshore monitoring stations (CNMS) located in the Gulf of Paria. These two water bodies mark the main receiving environments for all discharges from our Refinery operations. On January 22, a technical session was held at Petrotrin s Learning Centre with members of the EMA and Petrotrin which included Refining, HSE, Refinery Lab, Operators, Engineers (Process, Mechanical, & Civil), Oil Stocks, Port & Marine and other key personnel who are involved in the Water Permitting process. This Technical Session was chaired by the Manager HSE Mr. Shyam Dyal and included a large contingent of officers from the EMA, most notably Mr. Wayne Rajkumar Manager Technical Services (EMA), Ms. Vidjaya Ramkhalawan Assistant Manager, Technical Services (EMA) and Ms. Francis Mitchell-Wanliss Manager Permit Monitoring and Complaints (EMA). The aim of the session was to emphasize the terms and conditions of the Permit and the roles of each of the key stakeholders involved. In accordance with the requirements set forth in the Permit, Petrotrin is mandated to develop and implement a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) and a Best Management Practices Plan (BMPP). The QAPP is required to ensure proper sampling and testing protocols are observed to ensure sample integrity is maintained throughout. The BMPP will be designed to prevent or reduce pollutants from entering the receiving waters namely, the Guaracara River and the Gulf of Paria at each discharge point. During the term of the Permit, Petrotrin will have a duty to comply with all conditions of the Permit and well as a duty to mitigate or prevent any discharge in violation of the Permit that has a reasonable likelihood of adversely affecting human health or the environment. 15 Pupils of VOS Government Primary School gather around one of the benches Petrotrin reaches out to Primary Schools In 2014, Petrotrin initiated a public outreach exercise and sponsored the installation of outdoor benches at primary schools in its fenceline communities and in Tobago. This project, falling under the umbrella of Petrotrin s Public Education thrust, was intended to support the process of learning at our nation s primary schools and to promote positive messages encouraging team spirit and a positive attitude to learning. The eight schools targeted for this exercise were the Pointea-Pierre Government Special School, VOS Government Primary School, Egypt Village Government Primary School, Guapo Government Primary School, Clarke Rochard Government Primary School, Beach Camp Private Primary School, Forest Reserve Primary School and the Black Rock Government Primary School. The benches were installed near the end of the first school term and the feedback since then from principals of the recipient schools has been extremely positive. Ms. Maria Misette-Permell, Principal of VOS Government in Gasparillo noted that Petrotrin has provided continuous support to the school over the years. She said, Without Petrotrin, the school (VOS Government) would have wanted for a lot of things. As it is, we have a very comfortable and productive relationship with the Company. I am very pleased to say that there is nothing that we need that we cannot ask for. Of the exercise to sponsor the installation of benches, she said, Recently, they have sent along benches which we have placed in our gazebo for the comfort and relaxation of the children. They are nicely placed, quite comfortable and our children and the staff are quite appreciative of all that Petrotrin has done for us. This sentiment was echoed by Mr. Maximus Trotman, principal of Egypt Village Primary in Point Fortin and Ms. Jasodra Seegobin-Mahabir, principal of Clarke Rochard Primary. The two benches are fully utilized, said Ms. Seegobin- Mahabir. They are used by our teachers for remedial reading as well as by the children during their break periods. We really appreciate what Petrotrin did for us. Mr. Trotman said, I am happy that the benches are there, I wish they could have sent some more. The children use them, and they help to instill a sense of calm on the compound... I d like to say thanks to Petrotrin for the initiative. We applaud the gesture and we hope that in the future they would always consider Egypt Government. Mr. Milton Eastman, principal of Black Rock Government Primary School in the sister isle of Tobago said pupils were now using the benches to relax on evenings while awaiting transport to take them home. Petrotrin is now very prominent on the compound at Black Rock Government Primary School, he said. One of the benches was placed at the front of the school. We were very happy to have it. Previously, some of the children had nowhere to wait for transport on afternoons, so now they have a place to sit and wait. The other bench was placed in the middle of the school where the children use it at break and during lunch. We were really happy to be included in this project. If you have anything similar again, think of us. In 2015, as the Company continues to chart a strategic course to ensure its long term sustainability and viability, Petrotrin will continue to implement strategic projects building partnerships with its communities. 16 Supporting Our National Instrument Petrotrin has always been a proud sponsor and avid supporter of the steelpan art form. Over the years the Company has recognized the steelpan not only for its prominence within the musical fraternity, but for its role in the transmission and preservation of local culture; creation of employment; and its contribution toward building relationships and improving communities. In 2015, Petrotrin maintained its sponsorship of four bands and provided assistance to 14 steel bands. Seven of these bands competed in the National Panorama Finals. In the semi-final competition Petrotrin s sponsored bands, Petrotrin Katzenjammers of Tobago placed sixth (6th) in the Medium Band category while reigning champions Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove placed second (2nd) in the Large Band category. Among the Petrotrin supported bands, San Juan East Side Symphony placed first (1st) in the Single Pan category and Hope Pan Groovers placed ninth (9th). Super Novas Steel Orchestra placed first (1st) in the Small bands category while Tornadoes Steel Orchestra placed sixth (6th). 17 Talent behind the Correctional Walls Calypso Monarch at the Female Prison, Julia Ramdeen, aka J Lo, is congratulared by Petrotrin s Andre Bernard. J Lo moved many to tears as she delivered a touching performance entitled I m Sorry As a corporate citizen, Petrotrin recognizes the important role that culture plays in development of both the individual and the country. For the past 25 years, Petrotrin has been a major sponsor of the Annual Inmate Calypso Competitions at various prisons across Trinidad and Tobago. The 2015 Competition began on January 16 at the Golden Grove Prison and continued throughout eight prisons including Maximum Security, Remand and the Carrera Island Prison. The final competition was held at the Tobago Convict Prison on February 7. Confinement is by no means an impediment to the talented inmates behind the walls of Trinidad and Tobago s Correctional Facilities who competed for sovereignty in this year s calypso competitions. Many of them eagerly look forward to this annual competition as a means of expressing their collective talents. This year s competitions were no different as the inmates capitalized on the opportunity to display their talents in the various calypso genres ranging from traditional kaiso, soca, raga soca, groovy, and even chutney. There were also creative ole mas portrayals. Most of the performances portrayed positive messages of love and peace and offered sound advice and suggestions of how to deal with the issues of crime, drugs and child abuse. Performances were complemented by innovative and creatively designed and constructed costumes and props created from available materials which was also an opportunity to showcase skills learnt in other development programmes e.g. music, tailoring, visual arts etc. Musical accompaniment for performers was provided by the in-house bands comprised of inmates, giving visitors a complete show at each correctional facility. Participation in the Annual Inmates Calypso Competitions has been instrumental in the rehabilitation of some inmates who have even gone on to perform professionally upon their return to society following the completion of their sentences. Petrotrin is proud to play a role in the rehabilitation of those incarcerated through its support of these annual competitions as part of its commitment to the support and development of culture in Trinidad and Tobago. 19 Stiletto Stumble 2014 Excitement ran high on January 16 as Petrotrin hosted the first ever women s obstacle course competition dubbed the Stiletto Stumble exclusively for its female employees. The event attracted 100 of Petrotrin s female employees from across the Company s operations forming 20 teams to participate in the highly anticipated event. The sheer enthusiasm for the event was demonstrated by the eagerness with which women registered for the challenge. Within the first two days of the competition being advertised 14 teams were registered to compete. An initiative of the Corporate Communications Department, the Stiletto Stumble was conceptualized to build employee morale and foster team work in a fun atmosphere outside of the work environment. The sea of eager competitors in bright pink t-shirts gathered at the Bonne Aventure top field that afternoon was rivalled only by the large crowd of spectators and supporters who began gathering from as early as 4:00pm to witness the event. The course featured a series of 8 obstacles with a combination of both individual and team challenges. Teams began with a 10 meter dash towards the Gauntlet. Once through the gauntlet, teams then faced the Ultimate Survivor where they climbed the volcano and zip lined down. Participants then had to Pony Hop to the Slip and Slides and finally make their way through the Tunnel Crawl and Tyre Run to the winners circle. The women tackled the course like true warriors but in the end it was the Katalytic Krackers team who emerged as the overall winners conquering the course in 5 minutes 14 seconds, a mere 43 seconds faster than the runner up team - Hotties. The women who formed the unstoppable Katalytic Krackers team were Ariel Harangee, Eve Phillip, Kernisha George, Dalia Flanders and La Toya Louison. All four women work in various areas within the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery. Congratulations to all the teams that participated and look out for similar upcoming events. PetroConnect No. 150, 2 of
