1 THE ROTARY CLUB OF DINGLEY VILLAGE BULLETIN 28th September, 2016 From President Greg Wragg Twenty-three members and friends enjoyed a most interesting and informative presentation by club member, Dudley Podbury assisted by Veronica, on their journey entitled The Voyage of the Vikings. On their 35-day voyage on the cruise ship Rembrandt, they visited many small and large villages in North America, Greenland, Iceland, Nova Scotia, Southern and Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. The slides shown were a complete documentary of their trip and included both well-known highlights and encompassed lesser known points of interest onshore. Dudley assured listeners that he also had videos of their journey and also highlighted the links with the Vikings in earlier times. Members were asked to review the club s Strategic Plan that was approved by the Board and to raise any issues that they believed required further consideration or discussion. The reports from the members included a report by Val Glenn on behalf of the Jewellery Ladies. New ideas for further increasing fund-raising were in train and are detailed elsewhere in this Bulletin. Members noted that their team had raised over $100,000 since they started. A fantastic achievement! Pam Davies reported on her recent visit to Broome where she met two gentlemen who were part of the staff at the West Kimberley Academy. The boys from this Academy were the recipients of new basketball singlets purchased from a donation from District 9810 given to our Club to be used on a project in Gary s name. Norm Hurrey was delighted with the members response to his planned vocational visit to the CLOC Musical Theatre this week, followed by a dinner at the Flight Deck restaurant in the Moorabbin Airport precinct. This synagogue dates back to 1872 and our tour will be delivered by Leonard Levy, Past President of the synagogue and the Rotary Club of St Kilda. The tour and talk will take approximately one hour and we will then go to lunch close by, followed by a 2.00pm booking at the Holocaust Museum in Selwyn Street, Elsternwick. The boys from this academy were the recipients of new basketball singlets purchased from a donation District 9810 gave to RCDV to be used on a project in Gary s name. WKA is part of the Clontarf Foundation which has over 4000 participants nationwide. Foundation started by Gerard Neesham about 16 years ago. Funding comes equally from Federal, State and Private. 210 in program at WKA which was opened 11 years ago. WKA is based at Broome Senior High School and is a mentoring program for indigenous boys designed to bridge the gap between school and community. The boys engage in a range of activities including leadership and employment programs as well as weekly life skills classes. They also learn about local history and participate in team sporting activities such as football and basketball. Sport is an important part of the program and there is much interest when trips to tournaments or camps are arranged. In order to continue in the program and take part in sports camps and trips away the boys need to complete 4 quarters. 1. School attendance 2. Training attendance 3. School work standard 4. Behavioural standard. WKA staff are not teachers but mentors who seem very dedicated to the program. So much so that they do a pick up from the communities twice a week starting at 5.30am to get the boys to sports training sessions before school. 10% of the boys in the program go on to tertiary education. Academy also maintains an interest in the boys post school, helping them with employment placements where necessary. WKA boys also help the Rotary Club of Broome run their annual Dragon Boat Race. 4 Do you know what your duties involve when you are the rostered Sergeant-At-Arms? The club role of Sergeant-At-Arms is being shared by all members this year, so it is important to know what the role entails before your turn comes around. IMPORTANT: If you are rostered as the Sergeant- At-Arms and you are not able to attend a meeting, it is your responsibility to ask another member to fill in for you. (The more notice you give your replacement, the better.) The function of the sergeant-at-arms is to help maintain an orderly, dignified, and effective Rotary club meeting, one that will make the right kind of impression on club visitors and guests. The role that you play means the club President is free to concentrate on conducting the meeting. Your role A day or so before the club meeting, spend some time thinking about the kinds of fines that you would like make at the meeting. (Fines can be real or imagined and are always entertaining when humour is used. Be creative and have fun!) Arrive minutes prior to the meeting Make sure all the required regalia has been put out, including the heads-and-tails coins, the fines collection box, as well as the gift for the guest speaker and the prize for the winner of heads-and-tails Be aware who the guest speaker is and welcome them on their arrival. Make sure the guest speaker has ordered their meal, if not, either go with the guest speaker to order their meal (ask bistro staff member to put the cost of the guest meal on the club account), or ask another Rotarian to go with the guest speaker to do so Inquire if the guest speaker requires any special set up for their talk and make sure it is available e.g. data projector Ask other Rotarians if they have any suggestions for fines for the club meeting Call the meeting to order on time and introduce the club President Maintain order during the meeting in a diplomatic manner Run the heads-and-tails session and present the prize Run the fines session. Call for across-the-floor fines. Collect the fines money from the tables and members, or ask another Rotarian to assist you to collect the fine money. After the session give the money to the Treasurer or the vice Treasurer Make a point of thanking the guest speaker after the meeting and farewelling them Page 4

5 CLOC Musical Theatre is one of Victoria s largest and most successful non-professional music theatre companies. Established in 1964, CLOC commenced performing in church halls and on school stages prior to moving to the Alexander Theatre at Monash University with its 500 seat auditorium. After performing for 38 years at the Alexander Theatre, in 2010 CLOC relocated to its current performance venue the historical 783 seat The National Theatre Melbourne in St Kilda. Implicit in the objectives of CLOC (listed below) is the desire to create and present the highest quality non-professional music theatre, while at the same time ensuring the long-term economic viability of CLOC Musical Theatre Inc. CLOC is a large and sophisticated organisation one that continually strives to achieve the highest quality outcome for each production. As well as attracting an audience of up to 20,000 people each year, CLOC also provides and hires sets, costumes, props, personnel and advice to other theatre companies, both here and across the Tasman. CLOC s reputation is such that often a show s sets and costumes can travel throughout Australasia for up to two years (as happened with Phantom of the Opera, and is currently happening with Mary Poppins). Against a background of challenging economic times, and often with considerable competition from professional productions, CLOC has maintained and strengthened its reputation as a producer of first-class yet affordable musical theatre firmly believing that while there is a paying audience there is no such thing as amateur. CLOC is an integral part of the Victorian arts industry. Its strong commitment to presenting high quality musical theatre is evidenced by the profile of its performers and technicians. CLOC attracts over four hundred auditionees each year ranging in age from 15 to 72 with an average age of 28. Many of CLOC s performers and backstage workers are young. Each one is given every opportunity to fully participate in the many dimensions of contemporary musical theatre. Page 5

Did you know that 60 Euro cents can provide a child with a pencil and book for school? 180 Thai Baht (the equivalent of $6) will provide 20 doses of potentially life-saving measles vaccine. Foreign currency collected will be given to UNICEF's Coins for Kids program. UNICEF is a leading organisation providing help for the most vulnerable children. If you have foreign coins that may never be used again, bring them to our meeting or if you are in the shopping centre please drop them in to either the branch of the Bendigo Bank or World Destinations in Centre Dandenong Road opposite the shopping centre. 7 City of Kingston Free Event In 1997, Bay Street Productions was one of the first to bring the worlds of art and health together, under the banner, HealthPlay. Subsequently, it has staged over 400 performances around Australia, using a total of 28 professional actors, in 11 different plays. A HealthPlay production presents the audience with three steps towards understanding and ongoing communication: one, the play to entertain and educate; two, the forum in which questions arising from the play are answered and three, a chance to forge ongoing links with professionals and support groups, that will continue long after the play has gone. The event will also include an introduction by Adjunct Professor Barry Golding who was awarded a member of the Order of Australia (AM) this year for his services to the community, and extensive work regarding the links between men s wellbeing and informal education including playing a key role in the Men s Shed movement. A range of local health service providers and community groups will be on hand at the event and will be available to provide information.
