3 3 Every airport needs a Karl Has this ever happened to you? After arriving at the airport, excited and anticipating a few quick laps around the patch or a nice, leisurely cross-country trip in your aircraft, you discover, unexpectedly, a mechanical issue that grounds your plane and plans. It could be an under inflated nose wheel strut, a leaking O-ring gasket under the fuel tank cap or a dead battery. These, by the way, have all happened to me. But, in each case my plans were immediately revived when Karl George came to the rescue and Karl proudly holds his A & P Certificate got me on my way. Every airport needs a Karl and the pilots at Bloomsburg Municipal are most fortunate that the original works here at N13. In fact, our Karl has selflessly saved the day countless times for so many pilots over the past 44 years. If you ve had a magneto, starter, alternator, or generator rebuilt at Columbia Aircraft Services (CAS), chances are Karl did it. If you ve had an engine overhauled at CAS, chances are Karl removed and re-installed it. In fact, he probably dressed the engine and checked it out in the test cell. And, it s a sure bet that if you ve had your airplane annualled at Columbia Aircraft, yep, Karl probably did that too. Honestly, if you ve ever brought your plane to CAS for just about any work at all, you can probably thank Karl for getting you back in the air. Now, stop for a moment and ponder this. If Karl was born on January 5, 1957 (and he was), how old was he when he started turning wrenches at Columbia Aircraft. Just do the math. If you got seventeen, then yes sir, give yourself a cigar! How many people do you know that s worked that many years for the same employer and still isn t eligible to collect social security yet? And, in case you re wondering, when and how this enduring career began? Then read on. Little known to most folks around here, the U.S. Radium Plant was not only located just up the road in Almedia, but also leased a building just off Market Street next to the old A&P Grocery Store at the lower end of Bloomsburg. The owner of this building was Fred Vietig, who was also
4 4 the owner of Columbia Aircraft Services. The man responsible for maintaining the boilers in this building was Wilmer George, who convinced Fred to hire his older son, Ron George, at CAS. Two years later, Ron told his kid brother, you guessed it, Karl to apply for an opening at Columbia. And the rest, as the saying goes, is history. So, on June 16, 1974, Karl started his current 44-year career at Columbia. So many memories, reminisced Karl, I could write a book. As the rookie, he sighed, I took a lot of good-hearted abuse. You had to have thick skin to work with the guys back then. The names of his coworkers are near legendary and read like a who s who list in the annals of Columbia Aircraft s history. In addition to Fred Vietig, there was Fred, Jr., Bill Bartsler, Glen Beckley, Jimmy Yodock, Jim Fegley, Karl Kingston, Don Schultz, Wilber Brown, Fred Rip Ripka, Dave Allen, Scotty Smith, and Shirley Brobst. There was never a dull moment when Jimmy Yodock was around, chuckled Karl. He raced motorcycles and often used the runway as a test track when Fred wasn t around. And lunchtime often turned into a water battle with the garden hoses. With a broad grin, Karl stared straight ahead in deep thought and said, We worked hard, but we also had a lot of fun. Government contracts to overhaul army helicopter engines ended in 1973, but CAS was still contracted to do IGSO 480 engines for twin Bonanzas and Queen Aires. When I first came to work at Columbia, there were days when Fred would take several of us to his farm to round up cows that either escaped from the pasture or were headed to the auction, recalled Karl. Other days I was making hay for Fred at the farm and other times right here in the fields around the airport. In all the 44 years I ve worked for Columbia Aircraft, Karl stated, I ve never been laid off, even when engine work slowed down. Over the years, no matter who owned the company, they always found something that needed to be done. Young Karl came to CAS with a background in engine and auto body repairs, having worked with his father and brother in a family owned repair shop in Artistes. Karl pointed out, whether it was Vietig or Bartsler, if they knew you really wanted to learn about aircraft engine repairs; they would spend the necessary time teaching you. There wasn t and still isn t a day here, Karl explains, that I didn t learn something new and I still do. One of my favorite, memorable learning experiences, said Karl was when Bartsler first showed me how to set up and take a plane with a new engine out on the ramp to do a run up. He taught me how and what
5 5 to do taxiing. In fact, after 44 years, Karl has probably logged more taxi time than most pilots have flying. Whether it was under the leadership of Fred Vietig or future owners of CAS like Bill Bartsler, co-owners Scott Smith and Shirley Brobst or the present owner, Kelly Green, Columbia Aircraft Services has always been committed to producing quality aircraft engines and maintenance. Pondering the question, What do you enjoy most about working at Columbia Aircraft? Karl replied in a more serious tone, Freedom in the shop. No matter what it is, when something needs done, I can go do it. He added, It s not the same old dull job day after day. I really enjoy installing an engine and starting it up for the first time; the smell of fresh paint baking on a new, hot engine. It makes me feel like I ve really accomplished something. Numerous times over the years Karl has even taken his trade to the air, packing his tools, and flying out to other airports in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Connecticut, and New Jersey to work on aircraft. Of the many accomplishments Karl has achieved, the one he is most proud of is the A + P (Airframe and Power Plant) license he earned in Karl is also quick to point out that many of his fondest memories are of the pilots that have or currently call N13 home. Stories abound of the accomplishments and antics of such well-known local aviators as Bud Thiel, Clyde and John Yohey, Stan Oberender, Gonzo, Dick Sharrow, Denny Stahl, Jimmy Yodock, Ed, and Jimmy McCutchin all characters that have added unique character to the Bloomsburg airport over the years. When asked to name the top three aircraft he likes working on the most, Karl immediately said, I love Aerostars and all their power. They are really a sweet airplane. Number two on his list is a tie between the Cessna 182 and 210. Finally, after a moment thinking about it, Karl picked the Bonanza because, as he said, I ve gotten to know them better because there are so many on the field here at Bloom now. Each morning, when most of us has either hit the snooze button or are planning to when the alarm goes off, Karl is, as he puts, getting things cranked up around here. That includes making the A.M. pot of coffee. A long-standing tradition in the shop, however, has Dave Allen brewing the P.M. eye-opener. Naturally, it goes without asking, who makes the best concoction? And, of course, the debate has, and will rage on as long as each claim to have the best recipe.
6 6 Here s another little known historical fact about Columbia Aircraft Services that Karl is proud to be a part of. When it was time for the first, second and third Piper Comanche ever assembled, with their enormous eight-cylinder Lycoming IO-720 engines, to get their first major overhaul, all of them were done here at Columbia. Now at age 61 and still looking ahead, what are Karl s plans for the future? I would like to earn the Charles E. Taylor Master Mechanic award, stated Karl. I m going for fifty years, adding, I would be the third mechanic in Columbia Aircraft Service s history to achieve that award. The others are Bill Bartsler and Dave Allen, who just recently received the award last October 12, The Charles E. Taylor Master Mechanic Award is presented by the United States Federal Aviation Administration in honor of Charles Taylor, the first aviation mechanic in powered flight. The award recognizes the lifetime accomplishments of senior aviation mechanics. Taylor served as the Wright brothers mechanic and is credited with designing and building the engine for their first successful aircraft. Recipients of this honor must be U.S. citizens and have at least 50 years in aviation maintenance as a mechanic, repairman, avionics, manager, inspector, or instructor as long as he/she kept his/her credentials. Also eligible are applicants that have been an FAA certified mechanic or repairman for a minimum of 30 years, while the remaining 20 years may be accepted if that individual served as a mechanic in the military or worked in the aviation maintenance or manufacturing industry. Receiving the Charles E. Taylor Master Mechanic Award is one of the most prestigious honors in aviation and no one will be more deserving than Karl George. Below (L) Karl / (Rt.) John Y. Below (Rt.)
