Welcome to Cologne/Bonn Cologne Bonn Airport is one of Germany s most important commercial airports. In terms of passenger figures, it ranks number 6 in Germany, with 12 million passengers, and, in the cargo segment, it is among the 8 largest airports in Europe. With some 14,000 employees working for 122 business enterprises, it is one of the largest places of work and a major economic factor in the region. The operating company of the Airport is Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. 01 Airport 02 Airport Airport 03

The Airport in figures The entire Airport covers 1,000 hectares, which is equivalent to 1,000 football pitches. The 3 car parks provide parking spaces for 12,535 vehicles. Adding it all up, in any one year, the passengers fly about 3,000 times around the equator. On average, the passengers are on holiday for 7days. The largest of the three runways is 3,815metres long. 184 Every day, trains serve the Airport Railway Station; on Saturdays and Sundays, there are 156 trains per day. In summer, up to 22,000 pieces of luggage are loaded per day. In the 2 Terminals, there are 86 check-in desks, 48 gates and 54 shops and restaurants. There are 6 solar power systems at the Airport, with a total of 13,795 modules. Every year, the Airport secures an income amounting to 552,000,000 Euros. The Airport owns 4 beehives and is home to some 200,000 bees. 34% of the passengers are under the age of 30, 8% are 65 years or older. 109 There are parking positions for aircraft, 27 of which are directly at the terminal buildings. 06 Airport Airport 07
Passenger traffic Last year, more than 12 million passengers took off and/or landed at Cologne/Bonn. More than any other airport, Cologne Bonn Airport has the finest reputation for budget flights. More than 30 airlines connect the Airport with more than 120 destinations in almost 30 countries. These include Eurowings, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Norwegian, Condor, EasyJet, Turkish Airlines, TUIfly, Wizz Air, Pegasus Airlines and SunExpress. 02 Traffic 08 Traffic Traffic 09
Cargo traffic With more than 800,000 tonnes of cargo, the Airport has secured a top position in Europe. The world s largest express cargo enterprises fly in and out of Cologne/ Bonn. UPS operates its European hub here, FedEx runs its cargo centre for Central and Eastern Europe, and DHL also operates a branch here. All in all, 10 cargo airlines take off from Cologne/Bonn to some 70 destinations in 40 countries around the globe. Cologne Bonn Airport has a 24-hour operating licence. 10 Traffic Traffic 11
Ground handling Covers all activities that prepare the aircraft for take-off. The time between landing and taking off is often only minutes. Board catering Is delivered dry-ice cooled in sealed trolleys. A water tank truck delivers fresh water and drains waste water. Fuel truck Pumps kerosene into the fuel tanks located in the wings. How much is loaded that is the pilot s decision and depends on the flight route and load. Baggage Between 150 and 170 pieces of luggage per holiday airline, loaded and unloaded by two loaders and a loading supervisor. Pilot and crew Are provided by the airline. Depending on the duty roster and the duties already flown on that day, there can be a change of crew at Cologne/Bonn. Marshaller Guides the landed aircraft to its final parking position, using signalling discs and marshalling wands. Ground Power Unit Supplies electricity for the onboard electronics, air-conditioning, etc. at the parking position. All about aircraft Fuel truck Marshaller Board catering Baggage Ground Power Unit Pilot and crew Passenger stairs If the aircraft is not directly at the terminal, the passengers will be transferred to the apron by bus and then use the passenger stairs. Traffic pylons Mark the security zone around the parked aircraft. Ramp agent Coordinates all ground handling processes and is the contact person for the crew, loaders etc. Chocks Secure the stationary aircraft. Once the chocks are in place, the aircraft is on block and ground handling can begin. German Red Cross Every year, the Red Cross helps some 60,000 passengers with restricted mobility in boarding and leaving the aircraft. Tow tractor Tows stairways, baggage trolleys, power supply etc. in everyday speech often called Rofan, after the best-known manufacturer. Pushback vehicle Pushes the aircraft backwards out of its parking position until it can taxi alone onto the runway. 12 Traffic Traffic 13 Chocks Passenger stairs Ramp Agent Tow tractor Pushback vehicle Traffic pylons German Red Cross
people work in 122 companies at the Airport. The top three employers employees 03 Place of work 30% women 70% men Origin and background of the employees % night work 54% day work Place of work At Cologne Bonn Airport, some 14,000 people have their place of work, and that includes the most various jobs/professions, from pilots through police officers to parcel sorters. This makes the Airport one of the most important employers in the region. The largest employers are the express cargo business enterprise UPS, the Lufthansa Group and the operating company Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH, which employs 1,793 people. 14 Place of work Place of work 15
Climate protection Taking 2005 as the emissions reference year, Cologne Bonn Airport has set itself the goal that any future growth until 2020 will be carbon-neutral. To ensure this, the Airport is applying innovative technology wherever possible. This includes, for instance, procuring electricity from four combined heat and power units and six photovoltaic systems which, with a total area of 24,800 square metres, are among the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. These measures go along with energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in the terminals and the use of energysaving LED lighting technology. Noise protection For over 25 years already, the Airport Company has been making great efforts to protect its neighbourhood from aircraft noise. Since the beginning of its passive noise protection programme in 1991, ca. 76 million Euros have been invested in noise protection measures. Within the night noise protection zone around Cologne Bonn Airport, which covers 930 streets with 21,000 houses, the Airport funds the installation of sound-insulating windows and ventilators in bedrooms and children s rooms permanently in use. So far, 55,000 residents have been benefitting from this. The noise reduction concept also includes the restricted use of the runways during the night, as well as noise abatement flight procedures, which considerably reduce the noise level in the Airport neighbourhood. Higher tariffs for night flights result in air traffic being shifted to daytime. Airlines pay surcharges for loud aircraft, and low-noise aircraft receive a discount. On the Airport website, you will find all information on aircraft noises and passive noise protection. 04 Environmental protection 16 Environmental protection Environmental protection 17
Landscape protection Cologne Bonn Airport is located on the edge of the nature reserve Wahner Heide, a 5,000 hectare-wide heath landscape. The Airport Company took over the patronage over the reserve and, since 1996, has invested almost 16 million Euros in scientifically monitored renaturation and maintenance measures, which are carried out to compensate for the sealing of surfaces on the Airport grounds. Since 2016, all constructional interventions and the corresponding compensation measures have been documented in an eco account. A major project is the grazing of the heathland by herds of Glan cattle, goats, sheep, donkeys and water buffalos. These four-legged helpers feed on plants non-endemic to the heathland, which contributes to preserving the typical heath landscape. In addition to this, the Airport renatures moor biotopes, which form the habitat of ca. 700 endangered plant and animal species registered in the Red List. 18 Environmental protection Environmental protection 19
