4 RNP-10 Fundamentals The probability of loss of long range navigation capability must be less than 10-5 per flight hour Dual long-range sensor equipage is accepted as meeting the 10-5 availability requirement Thorough analysis needed for less than dual equipage Positive assessment is dependent on quality of analysis RNP-10 Errors Navigation positioning error is dominant Flight technical error, path definition error, and display error insignificant for the purposes of RNP-10 approval When flight planning, evaluate RNP-10 eligibility for each intended route. Evaluation should include: RNP-10 time limit, Effect of En Route navigation system updates Headwinds Slide 4

5 INS Qualification 14 CFR Part 121 Appendix G Approved Inertial systems can be considered to meet RNP-10 standards for up to 6.2 hours of flight time. Operators may extend their RNP- 10 time limit by updating Automatic using DME/DME = Baseline minus 0.3 hours Automatic using DME/VOR = Baseline minus 0.5 hours Manual using an approved method = Baseline minus one hour Note: If manual updating is not specifically approved, manual position updates are not permitted in RNP-10 operations Slide 5

6 GPS Qualification Aircraft approved to use GPS as a primary means of navigation for oceanic and remote operations, meet RNP-10 requirements without time limitations At least dual GPS equipment is required RAIM is Required A Fault detection and exclusion (FDE) availability prediction program must be used. The maximum allowable time for which FDE capability can be projected as unavailable is 34 minutes if GPS is the only RNP-10 qualified sensor available at the time of the FDE hole Slide 6

7 Multi-Sensor Qualification Multi-sensor systems integrating GPS with RAIM/FDE that are approved using the guidance of AC A meet RNP- 10 requirements without time limitations The INS or IRU must be approved in accordance with part 121, appendix G or equivalent For aircraft equipped with at least one approved GPS and one approved INS or IRU in a stand alone configuration: (Stand alone means that navigation information from the GPS and INS is not integrated through an FMC Show that the systems are installed and operated IAW the appropriate civil requirement documents. 8 Operational Considerations FLIGHT PLANNING. Verify the aircraft is approved for RNP-10 operations Verify the RNP-10 time limit has been accounted for Verify the letter R is annotated in Block 10 (Equipment) of the ICAO Flight Plan Verify the requirements for GPS (i.e. Predictive RAIM or FDE) Account for any operating restriction related to RNP-10 approval PREFLIGHT : Review maintenance logs and forms to ascertain the conditions of equipment required for flight in RNP-10 airspace Check condition of navigation antenna and the condition of the fuselage skin in the vicinity of each of these antenna Crews must be able to recognize and advise ATC when the aircraft is no longer able to navigate to RNP-10 capability Slide 8

9 Operational Considerations (Cont.) EN ROUTE. Two operational Long Range Navigation systems capable of navigating to the RNP should be available at the oceanic entry point Before entering oceanic airspace, the aircraft s position should be checked as accurately as possible by using external navigation aids Use a cross checking procedure to identify navigation errors in sufficient time to prevent aircraft from inadvertent deviation from ATC cleared routes. Advise ATC of any deterioration or failure of the navigation equipment below RNP-10 requirements Includes deviations required for a contingency procedure. Slide 9

Ensure that crews are knowledgeable of the topics contained in A, Crew must know the limits of their RNP-10 navigation capabilities Crew must understand the effects of updating Crew must be familiar with RNP-10 contingency procedures. 11 FAA Cert Requirements Summary RNP-10 operations. (For Part 121, 125 and 135 operators: appropriate manuals updated). Documentation that shows that pilot and if applicable, dispatcher knowledge of RNP-10 operating practices and procedures will be adequate. (For part 121, 125 and 135: training programs updated). Documentation that appropriate Maintenance practices and procedures have been adopted. Minimum Equipment List (MEL) updates Operating history that identifies past problems and incidents, if any, and actions taken to correct the situation. Awareness of the necessity for follow up action after navigation error reports and the potential for removal of RNP-10 operating authority. Slide 11

12 FAA Cert Requirements Summary The application should contain the following elements: Airworthiness Documents that establish the aircraft/nav system group being proposed, its RNP-10 approval status, and a list of airframes in that group. A recommended time limit for aircraft where INS s or IRU s provide the only source of long range navigation Documentation that establishes the RNP-10 area of operations or tracks for which the specific aircraft/nav system is eligible. Documentation that operator has adopted operating practices and procedures related to Slide 12

13 RNP-10 Qualified Aircraft Data Base The FAA Technical Center maintains a database of approved aircraft. As USAF aircraft and operators are approved for RNP-10, they should notify AFFSA with the information detailed below. State of registry of the aircraft (US) Name of the operator State of the operator Aircraft type, expressed Aircraft mark or series. The aircraft manufacturer s serial number or construction number. Aircraft s registration number. Make/model of long range navigation systems and number with which equipped (e.g., 3 Carousel IV INSs) For INS or IRUs: approved RNP-10 time limit (e.g., 6.2 hours, 10.0 hours) Aircraft s 24-bit mode S address Name of the authority that issued the aircraft s RNP-10 approval. The date of approval Document used for criteria to approve or revoke RNP-10 (e.g., FAA Order A). If the document allows more than one method of approval, the operator should cite the method used (e.g., AFM Revision, data collection) and reference document chapter number or paragraph number. Any other relevant remarks. AFFSA will pass the information on to the FAA Technical Center Slide 13

14 RNP-10 Facts of Life RNP-10 Routes are available today in the Pacific ADS/CPDLC messaging is not required to access RNP-10 airspace Some routes will support datalink if available on the aircraft but it is still optional today Some routes are not FANS routes and will not support datalink even if the aircraft tries to initiate contact An RTCA DO-200A/201A certified data base is not required to access RNP-10 airspace A validated waypoint database is needed If GPS is to be used as the sole sensor supporting RNP-10 operations it must be Primary Means Oceanic & Remote qualified or provide equivalent performance RE FAA Notice Slide 14
