1 T e x i n s F l y i n g C l u b N e w s l e t t e r President s Corner Page 1 PRESIDENT S CORNER Here we are with another summer flying season upon us. We're doing everything we can to keep the aircraft flying. I'd like to ask each and everyone to do your part too. Soon you will see some cleaning supplies in each of the aircraft. I'd like to see everyone take time and do a proper post flight inspection and clean up. The act of taking a damp cloth and wiping down the leading edge of all surfaces will go a long way in keeping bugs from drying out and making it harder to get off. This will keep our planes looking better and make the paint on the leading edges last a little longer. If we could spend half as much time doing a post flight as we do a pre flight, we can keep the fleet looking better. One other thing that keeps coming up is scheduling. Please be considerate and be prompt adhering to your schedule. Don't show up 30 minutes after you're scheduled and leave one of the aircraft sitting on the ramp on a weekend. I know it's tough to get an aircraft on the weekends and we are aggressively working on another aircraft. Until then, please be considerate of your fellow club members. If anyone has a lead on another aircraft, we will entertain anything within reason. Club Notes Elections Post-flight checklist Reg. of the month Page 2 June Presentation - F-4 Rich Graham Page 3 Club Events - page 4 TFC Fleet Notes Prices, Usage, maintenance notes, events, places Page 5-6 Board Notes notes from the board meeting Page 7 Thank you again for keeping us on our toes. If you have any concerns, please contact me. I will do my best to resolve them. I can't stress enough how privileged I am to work with this fine group of board members. If you see one of us around and would like to talk about something, please grab us. The one thing we do well is talk and we also listen. 3 June Presentation - Flying the F-4 Phantom II by Charles Galles Rich Graham gave us a great presentation at our meeting. Most of us know Rich as a TFC instructor and former SR-71 pilot. However, earlier in his career he flew the F-4 Phantom II in Vietnam, flying 210 missions! Rich talked about how one of his instructors taught him to fly the F-4 as if the controls were damaged using only differential thrust from the engines. That instructor was Bob Pardo, famous for an amazing and brave piece of flying known as Pardo s Push. Look it up on the internet if you haven t heard of it. After training, Rich flew with the 555th ( Triple Nickel ) squadron under Col. Joseph Kittinger for many of his missions. Col. Kittinger gained fame in 1959 for a series of parachute jumps from the edge of space, feet up. We heard some great stories about mascots, pranks, and traditions observed by the men in his outfit. After his tour with the 555th was up Rich signed on for a tour with a Wild Weasel squadron. Their motto just about summed up the missions: first in, last out. Their job was to fly around live SAM sites to get the enemy to start shooting at them and then they would launch missiles to take the sites out so that incoming bombers could attack their targets. The stated mission also inspired the unofficial slogan YGBSM - you gotta be shittin me!. Many thanks to Rich for coming out to share a little bit of aviation history with us. And thank you for your service! After the presentation Rich sold and signed copies of his books on the SR-71. He donated a portion of the proceeds to our club. Thanks! 7 Texins Flying Club Board Meeting Updates Operations Report Ron Myers will be taking over for Fred as VP operations. Ron looked into wraps for planes - the cost is reported to be 25%-30% cheaper than a full paint job. Will continue to investigate. 3NB has new mini logbook with essential maintenance records. Originals kept in Anthony s hangar. Other planes will follow suit. 150 s will require magneto rebuilds at next 100hr. Chief Instructor nothing to report. Safety Officer FAA portable hypoxic chamber is worth a visit if you can. Brian reported effects he experienced after just 2-3 minutes. Brian also mentioned his personal minimum of using oxygen at night above 5k ft - it really helps with night vision. Treasurer Accounting firm finally delivered overdue report. Report was not correct, will pursue with Texins Association. 3NB engine cost $5K beyond reserves of $28K. We expect upcoming overhauls will have same issue with age of case and may require new engines. We are considering best options for ensuring we plan for adequate holdback reserves. Controller Avionics upgrade reserve, FAA offering rebate for ADS-B conversion, club considering options. Cross-Country Maintenance Cleaning kits to be placed in all airplanes for cleaning leading edges after flights. Trainer maintenance/gps updates no report Membership 5 resignations and 3 new members. Communications Charles will start new regulation of the month feature in newsletter. Will look at increasing awareness for post-flight inspections.
