50 My journey started with taking flight lessons towards my Private Pilot License at NFC in Weston Airport. After completing a year of lessons I was sure the aviation industry was for me. I had a keen interest in the operation of the aircraft so I applied to IT Carlow to study their BEng Aircraft Systems. This degree programme offered me the opportunity to develop skills I never imagined I would obtain, machining and manufacturing, aircraft maintenance knowledge and circuit design and soldering. After my second year at IT Carlow I realised I wanted to continue to study and decided to apply to study Aerospace Engineering at Queens University Belfast. After graduating from IT Carlow, I took on an internship with CIT Aerospace working along with their technical team and gaining invaluable experience before starting back at QUB that September. Again I spent my summer as an intern between year one and year two at QUB, this time in SMBC AC. This allowed me the opportunity to apply some of the skills I had learned the previous year while learning about another companies culture and getting real responsibility within a number of teams in the company. I am due to finish at QUB in July 2018 and I now hope to join the aviation industry with a completely different view compared to the day I took my first flight lesson. The Industry is big, exciting and right on your doorstep. Take every opportunity you can get, find d a mentor that will give you guidance, and be open minded d about where you could go in the future. Bridget Corry Name: Bridget Corry Current Position: Intern at Genesis Aircraft Services Positions within IASA: Chairperson, Student Engagement Officer, Health & Safety Officer I graduated University College Dublin (UCD) in 2017, where I majored in Economics and Geography. In my final year, I specialised in Transport and International Trade Economics and the Globalisation of the World Economy. Specialising in Transport Economics, particularly Aviation Economics, gave me a broad understanding of how the Airline Industry works all the while gaining invaluable skills in business development and data analysis. I had always wanted to work on the ground at the airport, so when I finished university I began to work as a Passenger Service Agent for American Airlines with Swissport. Working for American Airlines was a great opportunity and gave me a great insight into what it is like to be part of the grounds operations of an airline and the stresses and the thrills it can bring. Going to work in the middle of the night, screaming Final Call down the microphone and running down the jet bridge to close the aircraft doors to ensure an on-time departure. Everyday brought new challenges and excitement! Today, I am an Aviation Analyst for the DAA. Here my key responsibilities are to analyse airline and passenger traffic performance at Dublin Airport, while also keeping up to date with current market trends such as airline performances and how particular markets are performing. Name: Ross Quinless Current Position: Aviation Analyst at Dublin Airport Positions within IASA: Secretary, Student Engagement Officer Being a part of IASA has been one of the greatest honours of my life and has given me memories that will last a lifetime. I would recommend anyone who has the commitment and passion for aviation to join IASA. I have learned so much more about the ever-expanding aviation industry but more importantly IASA has given me lifelong friends. Ross Quinless 4 8

51 I joined IASA in September 2016 as Treasurer and having just started my own career IASA in many ways has allowed me to build up an important network of likeminded individuals, aviation passionate students and industry members. What intrigues me most about the aviation industry, and in particular within Ireland is the fondness and pride that industry members hold for not just their own careers but for the industry in general, which is testament to the success and attraction of aviation in Ireland. Being a part of IASA has given me the opportunity to get inside, to network with industry members, to attend aviation events and in general to mix with one of Irelands fastest growing industries. Internally I have also worked alongside a successful, hardworking and determined committee whom although come from a variety of different backgrounds all share the same interests and motivation to build, inform and to enhance the next generation of aviation professionals in Ireland, building an attractive reputation for the association in Ireland and abroad. Name: Shane Gorman Current Position: Trainee Accountant/ Consultant at KPMG Positions within IASA: Treasurer The nature of the aviation industry is cyclical and is currently benefitting from an extended period of success, however a strong pool of future aviation talent is required to ensure that when the trough of the cycle appears again that it has minimal impact on the industry through awareness and preparation, as such IASA s presence is now more important than ever. Although the association is purely focused on the aviation industry, committee members can gain a variety of skills across marketing, engagement, IT/web development which are attractively transferrable. To date, IASA has played an important role on many levels in my personal development, the committee and association s ambition ensures for continued success. Shane Gorman My passion for aviation spurred at age 8 after having my first flight abroad to Germany. Since then, I ve always wanted to become an airline pilot and so all my career decisions have been, and still are, based upon this goal. After some thought in secondary school about what college course might be most relevant to this goal, I opted to choose the Aviation Management with Pilot Studies degree in DCU, as a result of the modules in the degree that focused on a pilot career. On beginning the course, I got involved as much as possible in extra-curricular activities such as DCU Aviation Society and of course IASA. My motivation for getting involved with IASA was as result of wanting to improve key skills and to meet people in the industry. So becoming a committee member allowed me that opportunity through being part of the many events the IASA team has organised. Certainly, having gained core skills and industry knowledge with IASA, it has helped my career prospects greatly, as it demonstrates enthusiasm. This has helped me in getting two roles I have held since graduation, working with Norwegian Air International and currently, Stobart Air. Still, as I pursue a commercial pilot career, there s every probability that I will rely upon many important contacts gained through my time in IASA or those I have yet to make at the numerous events held annually. Ciarán Tourish Name: Ciarán Tourish Current Position: Operations Controller at Stobart Air Positions within IASA: Student Engagement Team Leader, Student Engagement Officer 4 9

52 Growing up, I had a keen interest in Maths and Science and I had also developed an avid interest in Aviation through travelling. I found out that Aeronautical Engineering was a perfect amalgamation of these three aspects and this compelled me to pursue the B.Eng. in Aeronautical Engineering degree in UL. My four years in UL helped me immensely to understand the various aspects of the industry and the plethora of opportunities out there for young engineers be it in the design & manufacture, maintenance, leasing or airline sectors. In year 3 of college, students are given the opportunity to do an 8 month internship to gain some relevant industry experience. I did my internship with Engine Lease Finance Corporation (ELFC), an aircraft engine leasing company located in Shannon. During these 8 months I learned a lot about leasing which is a booming sector, especially in Ireland and the huge role that engineers plays in this field. It was also around this time that I got involved with the setting up of IASA an association run by students with the aim of promoting aviation and bridging the gap that exists between students and the aviation industry professionals. I graduated in 2016 and I have since been working full time as a Powerplant Engineer in ELFC. In my opinion, being proactive and having a passion for the work you do are key and these qualities will help you go a long way. Greeshma Gopi Name: Greeshma Gopi Current Position: Power Plant Engineer at Engine Lease Finance Corporation Positions within IASA: Secretary My days since IASA have been busy, varied and thoroughly enjoyable. For context, my role since IASA has been amongst the Technical Asset Management team in Avolon. Working in the aircraft leasing space and its associated steep upward trajectory leads to a great deal of opportunity and responsibility with plenty of room for learning and development. You will never find any two days to be the same, which keeps things interesting. The readily available learning opportunities are welcoming and one in which allows you get up the learning curve in an expedited manner. This is an incredibly attractive environment to be amongst, particularly for somebody not too long out of university. IASA, in itself, is where a lot of learning experiences can be had and it comes highly recommended from me to join and/or get involved with all the activities correlated with the association. Cameron Fahy Name: Cameron Fahy Current Position: Asset Manager at Avolon Positions within IASA: Head of Engagement At the time of IASA s inception, I was mid-way through a degree in Aviation Technology at Dublin Institute of Technology, the first step of a career change sparked by a lifelong interest in aviation and a previously attained private pilot s licence. This degree offered a good overview of the industry with a particular emphasis on continuing airworthiness and maintenance management. Having finished this degree, I continued onto and completed a degree in Transport Operations and Technology from DIT, all the while maintaining an active involvement in DIT s Aeronautical Society committee, where the seeds of IASA were sown. Since my involvement with IASA my professional network has expanded greatly. This is perhaps one of the greatest benefits of involvement with the association, indeed one of its core aims for students. Whether working alongside or experiencing a brief encounter at an industry networking event, a short conversation with an experienced leader within his or her field soon broadens your knowledge of this vast industry. This Name: Carl Lynam Current Position: Technical Records at Eirtech Aviation Services Positions within IASA: Internal Policies Advisor, Co-Founder & Treasurer 5 0

53 was undoubtedly advantageous whilst studying, helping to source information for assignments and generating ideas for the final year project and subsequent dissertation. More recently I completed a course with Limerick Institute of Technology, focusing on the documentation requirements during the process of aircraft lease transitions, leading to a certificate in aircraft records. I currently work in the area of aircraft technical records, a position which offers an insight into the many major events in the life of an aircraft. Involvement in various projects gives exposure to both lessees and lessors on a daily basis and will, in time, help to forge future paths to follow in the industry. Carl Lynam Being an IASA co-founder of this non-profit organization, it helped me to broaden my knowledge about the aviation industry through the various events and symposiums organized. Also, it offered me an insight on how complex this industry is. IASA was a great opportunity for me to enhance my professional network. This has proved to be very beneficial to me, as in the summer of 2015 I have successfully secured an internship through the Romanian Government Internship Program working with the Romanian Aeroclub Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization (CAMO) department. Furthermore, in the summer of 2016, I undertook an internship with Part 21 Design Ireland as a Technical Services Engineer. Some of my duties included to help and provide support to the full-time staff, to draft the associated paperwork with design projects and prepare EU-OPS statements. The internship with Part 21 Design helped me to become familiar with Design Organisation procedures and the Initial Airworthiness regulation. Finally, in the summer of 2017, after I have successfully completed my undergraduate studies with a First Class Honours in Transport Operations and Technology in Dublin Institute of Technology, I was offered a full-time job with Part 21 Design which is now part of Aero Inspection International. At the moment, in Aero Inspection Part 21 I hold the position as a Design Engineer, being Name: Andrei Jatariu Current Position: Design Engineer at Aero Inspection Positions within IASA: Internal Policies Advisor, Co-Founder & Marketing Executive approved to classify and prepare documentation and certification for modifications on aircraft cabin and avionics. I believe this association will make a great platform for students to open doors to future opportunities within the aviation industry. Also, joining this association will inspire and motivate students to become the next leaders in the aviation industry. - Andrei Jatariu 51
