1 Spring 2013 Vol. 7, Issue 2 From the Desk of Arlene Feldman, President, NJAA Good news to start We want to thank all of you for the support that has enabled NJAA to serve as your advocate and which has resulted in the Governor s recognition. As we raise awareness of our issues and the benefits of general aviation, we will go a long way toward ensuring that we have safe and capable aeronautical facilities in New Jersey. Sincerely, Arlene Feldman, President, NJAA

The company then became General Pallet, LLC. The company has been recognized and has garnered several awards for its green initiatives from various government agencies as well as the NJ Business and Industry Association. Don helped design and build automated manufacturing equipment for the pallet industry and other equipment for high speed lumber processing and handling. Don s wife Paula L. ( Representative LoBiondo to Chair House Representative Aviation LoBiondo Subcommittee to Chair House Aviation Subcommittee U.S. Representative Frank LoBiondo (R-2) today was named Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee by House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) for the 113 th Congress. Congressman LoBiondo is a knowledgeable, proven leader on the Committee. I look forward to working with him to improve our aviation infrastructure and ensure the safety, efficiency and competitiveness of this critical component of our economy, said Shuster. Some of the issues and agencies under the jurisdiction of the Aviation Subcommittee include civil aviation policy, aviation labor, aviation commerce, safety and security, unmanned aircraft systems, and the majority of programs of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This chairmanship is of particular importance due to the aviation facilities that are located in the 2 nd Congressional District including the FAA Tech Center, the TSA Security Lab, the Federal Air Marshal training facility, and the Atlantic City International Airport. It is an honor to receive the vote of confidence from Chairman Shuster and my colleagues to lead the Aviation Subcommittee during this challenging time for the industry and our economy. The aviation industry is a tremendous generator for our local and national economy and directly employs millions of Americans while serving as a force multiplier across the nation. South Jersey intrinsically knows the critical role of the aviation sector with thousands of residents working at the FAA Technical Center and related security facilities on the Atlantic City International Airport campus, said LoBiondo. My focus will be to increase the effectiveness of our aviation network, with a keen focus on improving the safety and security for all users. LoBiondo has been a member of the subcommittee since (
3 NJAA Then and Now Aviation advocacy in New Jersey has been difficult since the 1950 s. With its relatively small land area, high population density and consequent high real estate prices, building airports in the state has always been a challenge. That challenge is magnified by unpredictable northeast weather.. Unique to New Jersey is the large number of privately owned public use airports that are saddled with ever growing property taxes. Much of the early history of the New Jersey Aviation Association can be attributed to three pilots, all with the name of Jack.who determined to form an organization that would speak to the issues and problems of the business community that used general aviation in the course of transacting their business. proposition. And so the New Jersey Aviation Association. Jack Elliott had been contributing an enormous benefit to pilots in his popular column, Wings Over Jersey, that ran for 37 years in the Star Ledger. Jack Penn was a Member of the N.J. Legislature from 1983 until he was appointed in 1994 as Executive Director of the Division of Aeronautics by Governor Whitman. Jack McNamara, served as Chair of the General Aviation Study Commission established by Governor Whitman that investigated the benefits of and threats to business aviation as a principal transportation resource. It was a daunting effort. In light of the lack of public recognition and awareness at nearly all levels of state government about how important general aviation facilities were to the business community, however the Three Jacks persevered and so the New Jersey Aviation Association was born and today is known as New Jersey s Voice of Aviation. 4 4 2/22/2013 The Honorable. United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C Dear Representative :: I am writing to respectfully request that you join the U.S. Senate Congressional General Aviation Caucus. The purpose of the General Aviation Caucus is to inform Members of Congress and their staff on federal and state issues important to the general aviation community in our state. U.S. Senators Mike Johanns (R-NE) and Mark Begich (D-AK) serve as Co-Chairman of the caucus, which is open to all Members of the U.S. Senate. As you know, General Aviation is a critical backbone to our state and national economy. Nationally, the general aviation industry is responsible for over 1.2 million jobs and a $150 billion in economic impact, and general aviation aircraft and airports help provide vital resources and services to businesses, farms, and first responders, including local commerce, fire-fighting, medical care, disaster relief, flight training and many others. The Caucus was established to provide pertinent information to Congress by holding regular meetings on issues effecting general aviation such as legislation related to taxes, security, as well as issues affecting small businesses and farms. I hope you will support general aviation by becoming a member of the General Aviation Caucus. To join the Caucus, please contact James Feldman in Senator Begich s office at (202) or atjames_feldman@begich.senate.gov. Sincerely, Arlene Feldman, Esq. President, New Jersey Aviation Association Youth in Aviation...
5 5 April 10, 2013 The Honorable Michael P. Huerta, Administrator Federal Aviation Administration, 800 Independence Avenue, SW Washington, D.C Dear Administrator Huerta: The members of the New Jersey Aviation Association, the recognized Voice of Aviation in New Jersey are gravely concerned by the FAA s recent decision to close the Air Traffic Control towers at Atlantic City Airport at night, and at Trenton Mercer County and Essex County Airports entirely. There is no more congested airspace in the world than that over the New York Philadelphia metropolitan area. Closing these towers and requiring void time releases at these airports will exacerbate delays at Newark International, LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy, Teterboro, Westchester and Philadelphia International airports. Moreover, it will increase the workload of the air traffic controllers, which is already at a maximum, and increase the danger of a serious accident to all aircraft operating in this airspace. These airports serve three of the most densely populated areas in this, the most densely populated State. They are large metropolitan airports that serve a significant portion of New Jersey s busy air traffic. They serve as relievers to the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan airports and thereby provide an increased margin of safety and efficiency in the northeast corridor. They serve as bases for several turbine aircraft operated by businesses in New Jersey. Recently Frontier Airlines has begun service at Trenton Mercer Airport in an effort to expand its customer base and to better serve the City of Trenton, New Jersey s State Capitol, and all of central New Jersey and eastern, Pennsylvania. Imagine trying to build an airline in the busiest airspace in the world receiving clearances by telephone, with void times. This airport also serves a number of Fortune 500 corporations that rely on multiple turbine aircraft to conduct their significant time sensitive business activities. In addition to its corporate operations, Essex County Airport serves as a major training airport. There are five flight training schools as well as a number of active flying clubs based there. Communications with air traffic controllers is an important part of student pilot training, especially, here in the northeast. But more importantly, Air Traffic Control towers are also an important means to insure safety for student operations. Remember, Essex County Airport is located in the same county, and only a few miles from Newark International Airport. We fully understand and support your efforts to reduce expenses, but we believe there must be a better way to do so than by increasing the risk of accidents here in the Northeast or by exacerbating air traffic delays for airlines and businesses in what is already the nation s most delay besieged airspace. I implore you to reconsider your decision, Thank you for your consideration, Sincerely Jack McNamara Chairman
