Room Washington, DC Mr. Secretaiy, We write today to express our views on the potential impact of the i»oposed "slot-swap" agreement between Delta and US Airways and its afssct on the Roanoke^Southwest Virginia regioa As you know, the Federal Aviation Administration (PAA) recoitly gave tentative approval to the "slot- swi^** between Delta and US Airways for Ronald Reagan Washington National and New York LaGuardia Airports. This iqtproval is conditioned upon the airlines selling some of their slot interests to U.S. or Canadian carriers with no service or limited service at the two airports. Mr. Secretary, access to the preeminent financial center in the country has proven vital to the employment base of the Roanoke Valley, the business community and economic development efforts. While this connection is crucial to domestic interests in Southwest Virghua and New York, access to New York also provides a vital one-stop connection for millions of non-urban residents and commercial partners to international markets. As you may know, US Airways services Roanoke (ROA) Regional Airport witii non-stop to New Yoik-LaGuardia (LGA) tbree-tinies daily. Roanoke has had service to LGA for nearly 20 years. However, it is our understanding that if this agreement between die airlines and FAA is approved, in its current fonn, service fibm Roanoke to New York could be eliminated. As such, we are deq>ly concerned tiut eliminating this service could have long lasting economic and social ranuficatioiui to millions of our constituents in Virginia. Without an effective, coordinated transportation system, of which air service is critical, and an available, skilled woricforce, our region's economic development efforts and future growth could be severely weakened. nwmoon neroxo T*m
