2 MD SPEAKS 3 According to the UN, more than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity and 1.6 billion people rely on forests and non-timber forest products for their livelihoods. Over 50% of the world s plant species are native to a specific country and do not naturally exist elsewhere. Protecting nature is both critical and our moral and ethical responsibility. Every year May 22 is being observed as International Day for Biological Diversity across the world to promote conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This day is not just a good reason to celebrate nature but is also a reminder that we are not the only form of life on this planet. Look around you - the variety of life (or bio-diversity as it is called) is mind-boggling. Whether it is plants or various animals, insects or algae, they reflect a balance that Nature s eco-system has planned for us. Each living being plays a unique role in this script - whether it s an earthworm foraging the ground, a bee drawing honey or an elephant feeding on tall grass in the jungle. They, almost invisibly, help maintain the delicate environmental balance here. Hence, protecting bio-diversity is not about maintaining other life-forms for their sake; it is for survival of the human race itself. So, do take pause and consider the fragility of our lives - without the rest of nature supporting us. Remember, it s got to be co-existence or no-existence. Best Wishes Ashwajit Singh

3 INTRODUCTION TO TOURISM, HERITAGE AND CONSERVATION 5 Tourism, Heritage and Conservation is emerging as a major pillar of economic development and employment generation. Promotion of sustainable tourism entails creating an opportunity to portray the past in the present through effective conservation and protection of religious and historic places, preservation of natural habitat, and development of strategic tourism infrastructure. Heritage management planning to achieve a balance between the tourist usage and preservation has become a prior requirement in tourism development as people are seeking to learn and communicate with their roots and their past. In short, to develop and manage tourism, a multi-dimensional approach is needed to strengthen the institutional capacity, engage with multiple stakeholders and establish appropriate protocols and systems. Our approach to Tourism, Heritage and Conservation is based on understanding the constraints of the institutional environment and building on this to provide institutional and capacity support to ensure long-term sustainability. Linking tourism with economic growth and employment, we work with governments to boost value-added tourism, while maintaining the heritage value and natural environment. We have been involved in project management, design and supervision activities supporting governments in sustainable, integrated and inclusive tourism development, capacity building, tourism strategy development, management of key natural and cultural heritage destinations, improved market connectivity, environmental planning of tourist places, development of tourism infrastructure, and institutional strengthening of nodal government departments.

4 INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY 7 BIODIVERSITY AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM 2017 is being observed as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Thus celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity under this theme provides an opportunity to raise awareness and action towards the important contribution of sustainable tourism both to economic growth and to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity THE YEAR OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM The International Year of Sustainable Tourism aims to support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behaviour towards a more sustainable tourism sector that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.

6 IPE GLOBAL KEY PROJECTS IN TOURISM, HERITAGE AND CONSERVATION 11 ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK HIMACHAL PRADESH TOUR- ISM DEVELOPMENT BOARD: INFRASTRUCTURE DEVEL- OPMENT INVESTMENT PROGRAM FOR TOURISM (IDIPT): PROJECT MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT (PMC) The program (IDIPT) envisages an environmentally and culturally sustainable and socially inclusive tourism development in the project states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand. The IDIPT project envisages environmentally and culturally sustainable and socially inclusive tourism development in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The expected impact of the project is sustainable and inclusive tourism development, in priority, state tourism sub circuits divided into marketable cluster destinations that exhibit enhanced protection and management of key natural and cultural heritage tourism sites, improved market connectivity and tourist support infrastructure. The prime purpose of this project is direct and indirect assistance to Project Management Unit (PMU) and Project Implementation Unit (PIU) to ensure effective coordination and implementation of whole investment programme to be covered under Infrastructure Development Investment Program for Tourism, State of Himachal Pradesh [IDIPT (HP)].

7 DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM, GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA: PREPA- RATION OF A COASTAL MASTER PLAN FOR THE THREE COASTAL DISTRICTS IN KARNATAKA 13 The prerequisites for the Master Plan are implementation of fundamental principles of preservation of the ecosystem and natural habitat, sustainable and responsible tourism development on Public Private Partnership basis, and engagement with the local communities. In addition, well designed marketing and outreach strategies for ensuring safety and security of visitors will also be devised, according to a statement here today.the coastline of Karnataka stretches for 320 kms between Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada district and Karwar in Uttara Kannada district. The 8 main rivers which drain into it are Nethravati, Gurupur, Udiyavara, Mulki and Pavange, Sita and Swarna, Haladi, Chakra, Kollur and Baindur. Karnataka has two major ports-- Mangaluruport and Malpe Fishing Harbour along with six minor ports. The State is linked with Mumbai and Thiruvanthapuram through a National highway and railway and is home to some of the most splendid coastal landscapes. The beautiful beaches, stunning backwaters and incredible islands make this state a potential tourism hot spot. The Coastal Master Plan will act as a building bridge between biodiversity, generation of livelihood opportunities for locals and provide for sustainable tourism development. It will include initiatives for protection of local resources, and developing economic opportunities for the dependent communities living in tourism rich regions. It will also include strengthening partnerships and collaboration between biodiversity and development sectors. The plan shall aim to ensure that the biological conservation and development should go hand in hand. We are very excited to take up this opportunity and we will ensure that through this master plan there is promotion of community based tourism with a focus on conservation and judicious utilization of natural resources. A boom in Karnataka Tourism sector will be at the heart of our efforts, said Anil Kumar Bansal, Director, Urban Development and Infrastructure Engineering.

8 15 WORLD BANK GOVERNMENT OF ODISHA: PREPARATION OF IN- TEGRATED COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT PLAN AND SHORELINE MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR ODISHA This project aims to ensure sustainable development and management of coastal resources and a compromise between humans and their natural habitat. The coastal zone has been receiving increased attention in the country, and world at large, due to pressure of population, developmental activities, trade, transport and presence of vital and critical habitats like Irrawaddy dolphins, olive ridley turtles, red crabs etc. The loss of biodiversity, severe coastal erosion, sedimentation in ports, harbors and industrial pollution are some of the major concerns to the coastal zone managers in Odisha. The ICZMP Odisha hopes to address these aspects in a systematic manner. The ICZMP Plan is expected to bring in multifaceted benefits to the Odisha Coast. The recommendations in the plan are aimed to bring about more secure coastal environment for the coastal population. It will not only provide for an increased resilience of coastal ecosystems but is also expected to incur livelihood benefits to the local population. With India now understanding the importance of tourism as an industry, the underlying principle of sustainable tourism which motivates to conserve environment and enrich local traditions and culture is the only road ahead. 10 19 THE WORLD BANK CHILIKA DEVELOPMENT AUTHOR- ITY: PREPARATION OF TOURISM MASTER PLAN FOR THE CHILIKA LAKE & ITS CATCHMENT IN ODISHA UNDER INTE- GRATED COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT PLAN (ICZMP) Aimed to promote responsible tourism including eco-tourism and community-based tourism in and around Chilika Lake, the second largest brackish water lagoon in the world and the largest in Asia (spanning over 1100 sq. kms.), the project focuses equally on conservation and wise use of natural resources, in compliance with environmental/ ecological laws and regulations. We are preparing tourism master plan for promoting overall tourism in and around Chilika Lake and its catchment area. The Master Plan aims at enhancing the visitor experience, improve growth based sustainable market position, maintaining ecological balance and developing competitive tourism products which will provide optimum level of visitor satisfaction. In addition, the scope also includes preparation of project profiles for tourism investment opportunities for a maximum of 10 selected priority sites (derived from the proposed tourism zones) which will be promoted by the Government of Odisha as PPP projects Environmental and tourism zoning, infrastructure assessments, tourism performance benchmarking and development of lake and island tourism products have been undertaken in the project. Detailed carrying capacity assessments for recreational boating in Chilika Lake and proposals to enhance Mangalajodi as an international birding destination is part of the tourism master plan. 10 ready to invest projects have been developed in various thematic clusters in the project. 10 MAY: WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY ~ SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF WILDLIFE AND PEOPLE WMBD 2017 aims to highlight the interdependence of people and nature, and more especially people and migratory animals- in particular birds, as they share the same planet and thus the same limited resources. Thus this edition hopes to raise awareness on the need for a sustainable management of our natural resources, demonstrating that birds conservation is also crucial for the future of humankind. The aforementioned project showcases our commitment to this significant day. in the project.

11 21 MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT (MOUD), GOVERN- MENT OF INDIA: SELECTION OF AGENCIES AS HRIDAY CITY- ANCHORS FOR PURI AND AMRITSAR UNDER SCHEME HRIDAY OF MOUD, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) scheme is an ambitious project of Government of India aimed at holistic development of heritage cities in the country. The HRIDAY Scheme focuses on development of civic infrastructure development projects around heritage sites leading to revitalisation of the cities as heritage and cultural destinations. As HRIDAY City Anchor, we are supporting City Mission Directorate in heritage related guidance, in addition to preparation of the City HRIDAY Plan and evaluation of projects executed under the HRIDAY scheme in Amritsar (Punjab) and Puri (Odisha). The work includes situation assessment & infrastructure gap assessment, identification and finalisation of 5 priority heritage areas for preparation of Infrastructure Development Plan (Phase 1), preparation of city specific toolkits along with evaluation checklists, preparation of Concept Plan for development/ renovation of the city museum/ cultural park, and review & evaluation of DPRs.

13 25 ADB: PROJECT MANAGEMENT, DESIGN AND SUPERVISION CONSULTANCY (PMDSC) SERVICES FOR SOUTH ASIA TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (SATIDP), BANGLADESH Development of cultural tourism and site restoration of 4 different archaeological sites (Mahasthangarh, Paharpur, Kanlaji Temple and Shai Gombuj Mosque, Bagerhat) in Bangladesh. Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded SATIDP focuses on development of cultural tourism and site restoration at 4 different archaeological sites (Bagerhat, Kantajee, Mahasthangarh, Paharpur) located along a heritage-rich geographic corridor extending from north to south in the western regions of Bangladesh. The project emphasises on heritage conservation, civil works and infrastructure development, financial management, tourism promotion and capacity building of the relevant stakeholders in order to ensure the sustainability of the tourism potential within these 4 sites. As a PMDS Consultant, we are is assisting the Project Management and Implementation Unit (PMIU), based within the Department of Archaeology, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of Bangladesh in managing detailed design, procurement, financial management, supervision and monitoring of the project including strengthening linkages between tourism and local population and building capacity of communities to enable them to obtain greater benefits from tourism activities at 4 heritage sites.
