1 DONOR RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES Northaven Trail GET INVOLVED FRIENDS OF NORTHAVEN TRAIL is a volunteer organization for the support, maintenance and beautification of the Northaven Trail. All neighbors, citizens and friends are welcome to join us and may become a friend by visiting our website and signing up for our newsletter. For donor opportunities, please contact us at info@northaventrail.org or visit the website at FRIENDS OF NORTHAVEN TRAIL P.O. Box Dallas, TX info@northaventrail.org Dallas newest hike, bike and recreation trail, located in North Dallas.
2 HISTORY OF NORTHAVEN TRAIL Early 90's Lois Finkelman, as President of the Dallas Park and Recreation Board, recognizes the need for additional recreational space in North Dallas. Over 70% of park land in the City of Dallas is south of the Trinity River. The concept of using TXU (now Oncor) power line easements for trail alignments is developed and City staffers begin identifying potential sites throughout the City The Dallas Park and Recreation Renaissance Plan is developed as a master plan for the City s park system. The first choice identified by citizens groups was Hike and Bike Trails. Community mandates in the plan provide for equity in the delivery of park facilities and programs that are dispersed throughout the city of Dallas. Major tenants of the plan include the need to develop connectivity throughout the Dallas park system through a diverse citywide trail network that links parks, neighborhoods, and major destinations. The City develops a Trail Master Plan identifying over 250 potential miles of offstreet paved multi-use trails. The NHT is shown with 9.5 miles from Central Expressway to Denton Drive. With the addition of the White Rock Creek Trail connection and the street connection to the Elm Fork Soccer Complex and to the Campion Trail in Irving, the entire length of the NHT will be over 13 miles. As the City geared up for bond elections, the NHT is identified on the Park and Recreation Department s needs assessment Linda Koop, a former Park Board Member and current City Council Member, added NHT to the list of projects for the 2006 City of Dallas bond election. The bond passes and financing for the NHT is approved. Initially, the NHT is funded from Valley Dale to Hillcrest Road for 1.3 miles. October 2009 Reprogramming additional funds made a total of $2,600,000 available for the NHT and extended the distance to Preston Road for a total of 2.2 miles. January 2010 An active group of interested neighbors forms the Friends of Northaven Trail (FoNHT) for the support, maintenance and beautification of the NHT. The FoNHT is a 501c3 non-profit organization that receives taxdeductible donations for improvements, programming and maintenance for the NHT. The City of Dallas recognizes the FoNHT as the defacto group representing the interests of the neighborhoods as they relate to the NHT. January Dallas County approves a partnership with the City to develop that connection from the NHT to the White Rock Creek Trail. This connection is named the Low Five because it will connect the trail system in 5 different directions. Currently in the planning stages, it will be developed by Dallas County via a matching grant of $2,500,000 (anticipated completion in 2013). This connection to the Low Five will intersect the White Rock Creek Trail, the Cottonwood Trail, the Southern Pacific Trail as well as the DART Forest Lane Station. Council Members Linda Koop and Ann Margolin worked with County Commissioner Maurine Dickey to secure funding for this important connection. July 16, 2011 Groundbreaking for the NHT happens behind Dealy School and is well attended. Mayor Mike Rawlings as well as Council Members Linda Koop and Ann Margolin are there to show support for the trail. April 14, 2012 The Ribbon Cutting for the NHT is held at the rest area near St. Michael s and Lavendale. Rawlings, Koop and Margolin once again show their support as well as County Commissioner Dickey. An enthusiastic crowd is eager to see the trail competed and has already been using the trail daily.
