Beaver Valley Estates Bulletin A River Runs Through It August Edition Alert BV Water Conservation Drought Plan in Stage 4 (RED ) The second week in July, Mike Armstead, owner of the Beaver Valley Water Company, recognized that the well was running low and changed the drought plan to the most severe stage : stage 4 RED. This means Mandatory Water Restrictions are necessary and no outdoor use of water is allowed, unless it is grey water. We are in the midst of the worst drought to hit Rim Country in 25 years. Many community and town wells have already gone dry due to ground water depletion. says Armstead. He adds, Even though there have been some good rain storms in July, it will take some time before we see the groundwater levels rise significantly. According to the Arizona State Corporation Commission, Stage 4 Exists when: A) The company s total water storage or well production has been less than 25 percent of capacity for at least 12 consecutive hours. Armstead noticed this in mid-july and began hauling water to BV to help fill our storage tanks. and B) The Company has identified issues such as a steadily declining water table resulting in poor water production and issues that can impact the company s ability to meet anticipated water demand on a sustained basis. Under Stage 4, the Company shall inform the customers of a mandatory restriction and employ water conservation measures to reduce daily consumption. In mid-july Armstead started drilling a second well and continued to haul water to meet community needs. It is important everyone in BV work toward conserving water use inside their homes. See the Conservation Tip Sheet on p. 2 and Armestead s column on p. 3 for more information about the current water situation in Beaver Valley. 1

Stages of Water Conservation. Think of a traffic light with green, yellow and red signals. Stage One uses GREEN for Normal Conditions, use water wisely. Stage Two uses YELLOW as a Caution Alert asking you to please cut usage by 50 %. Stage Four is RED, meaning no outside water usage. Right now we are in the Red stage. Mike Armstead ALERT BV now in Stage 4 RED of Water Conservation Plan Help BV become a water-wise community. Each family and individual can do a few things to help conserve water. Share your water-saving tips with the editor. Below are a few water conservation tips and resources. Conserve Outside Collect and use rain water for watering plants. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and patios. Conserve Inside Keep showers under five minutes. Wash produce in the sink or pan partially filled with water instead of running water from the tap. When finished, use wash water for plants. Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving, rather than running water. Keep a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap water run to get cool. Replace high-volume toilets (3.5 gal or more per flush) with new standard of 1.6 gl. Re-use clean household water to water plants. When washing dishes by hand, don t let tap water run. Fill one sink with wash water and the other for rinsing. Resources water wise plant list and expert advice 2

Mike Armstead, owner, CEO BV Water Company Management Systems LLC (928) / (928) BV moves to severe Stage 4 RED of Water Conservation Plan I want to thank all BV residents who really are doing a good job of conserving water during the extreme drought this summer. We need this effort to continue. Unfortunately, the drought got worse in July and we had to move to red Stage 4. This means mandatory water restrictions are needed and no outside watering is permitted. Please inform outside contractors working in Beaver Valley of the current severe water use restrictions. I changed the sign by the mailboxes from Stage 3 to Stage 4 RED - on July 13, That weekend I saw the well water level dropping quickly. So I had 16,000 gallons of water delivered in a tanker truck to get us through the weekend. I have continued to have water hauled in to keep our tanks filled and have brought in 82,000 gallons to help meet community needs through July 22, when this column was written. The good news is that we dug the second well to 400 feet and found water. Now I am doing pump tests to make sure it is a sustainable supply. Next we plan to perform lab testing to assure that the water quality will meet the Federal and state standards of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). These tests usually take about 60 days. Meanwhile BV residents should still conserve water. Keep watching the Water Conservation Plan Board for the red, yellow and green numbers. When you see it change to lower numbers, you can resume a little water use outside. Thanks for your cooperation. If you have questions about the Beaver Valley Water Company, feel free to contact me. As always, if you see any leaking pipes or have water problems, please report these promptly. Mike Armstead, owner, CEO 928) / (928) ymepayson@msn.com 3

Ann Stoppa President, BVIA Beaver Valley Firewise Committee Paul Slotvig Just a reminder that when you plan to build anything on your lot (this includes prebuilt sheds) our CR&R s require you to get board approval. In order to submit plans you can not have an outstanding balance on your annual dues. Call or me to be put on the agenda for plan approval. If you cannot attend a meeting please call or me on ways to submit plans. You must also have a building and drainage permit from Gila county. Plan to attend the meeting Saturday August 4th at 10:00am in the fire station ramada. We will be going over bids and plans for road and drainage work. Hope to see you there! Ann Stoppa President, BVIA stoppa@cox.net Editor of BV Bulletin BV Auxiliary President Beaver Valley Bobbie. We welcome your stories, photos, recipes and fun tips & tricks. Please feel free to contact me by or text. President: Bobbie Bennett BeaverValleyBobbie@icloud.com Vice President: Ann Stoppa stoppa@cox.net Secretary: Carol Brown carolosmanbb@gmail Treasurer: Iris Harpster ikharpst@hotmail.com (928) Keep your eyes on your eaves. Vents located in the under-eave area can be entry points for embers and flames when limited effort has occurred to reduce risks in the home ignition zones (particularly in the near-home zone). Embers entering an attic can ignite stored combustible materials. Research has shown that open-eaves are more vulnerable to both ember entry and direct flame contact exposures, relative to soffited-eaves. With open eaves, use a sealant (such as caulking) to cover gaps or enclose the underside of the roof overhang. In open-eave construction, embers can and do accumulate between blocking and joists and can ignite these members if sufficient accumulation occurs. The open-eave blocking likely include vents, so remember to add an adequate amount of soffit vents. Make sure the vent area ratio (vent into the enclosed soffit and enclosed soffit into the attic) follows the requirements of local building codes. Time-to-ignition is faster with under-eave construction and lateral flame spread is quicker, exposing other areas along the length of the home. Use noncombustible or ignition resistant materials to enclose the eave. The enclosure should extend from the roof edge horizontally back to the exterior wall. The horizontal soffit member should be attached to a ledger board that is itself attached to an exterior wall. Remember to log your time on the Firewise forms and turn them in to the Firewise mailbox at the Fire station. Thank you for all you do to keep Beaver Valley fire wise. Firewise is currently in need of a new Coordinator to replace me. I am resigning to pursue other opportunities. If you are interested - please contact me using the contact info in this bulletin. My last day will be December 31, 2018 (if not sooner). Training and assistance will be provided. Paul Slotvig Beaver Valley Firewise Committee pdsbvalley@outlook.com 4

Discover Beaver Valley - Trail Walk ~Then and Now~ Photo by Bing Brown Our second Trail Walk was Saturday, July 14th. Mike Armstead displayed his enlarged map of the meadow and park area back in the day when the train ran through Beaver Valley. Our Trail Walk also included where the train tunnel use to be. The tunnel was called Kiss Me Quick because it was such a short distance between the entrance and the exit. There s so much History in Beaver Valley! Don t miss the next Trail Walk! Follow BV Resident, Patrick Jenkins On His On-Going Journey We are now in the Inner Gorge, and the rock that makes up the walls is 1.8 Billion years old. Oldest exposed rock on Earth. Pretty humbling. Here is the link. From Clear Creek we make way for Phantom Ranch and our camp for the night at Trinity Creek. This was the day we almost lost Nancy over the side. Lots of rapids and big ones. OK, here is the next installment of our Grand Canyon Rafting Trip. Morning of day 5 and we take a short hike up Stone Creek. We pass through the Granite Narrows, the narrowest part of the Colorado River, 76 feet, and the deepest, at 100 feet. We began to see a few clouds show, as the Monsoon season is just around the corner. This was the scariest hikes, and the most Beautiful place on the River. Winding down toward the last day.
