2 INDIA - the adventure... We are excited to offer you the chance to be one of the first Australian photographers to explore a region of India - where few have travelled before... We will explore the Ganges River it s villages, tributaries and culture all on board the 5.5 STAR river boat Bengal Ganga. This is a beautiful ship with luxury defined in every facet from the staff to beautiful food, big beds and rooms and spacious decks. Teak, mahogany, special art work the perfect platform to explore regions less visited in India as we slowly cruise, or land and explore the many adventures of Kolkata / Kalna / Matiari / Baranagar / Murshidabad / Mayapur / Chandernagore. Just one morning... This morning we enjoy a rickshaw ride through the city centre of Kalna, en route to the enchanting Rajbari complex, with the highest concentration of temples in the region. Bengal s mixture of temple architecture includes the Nabakailas Temples. Built in 1809 by the Bardhaman Maharaja, the complex contains 108, eight slope-roofed temples 74 in the outer circle and another 34 making an inner circle. INDIA - the adventure... Son s Pearce and Frazer also offer unique experience with Pearce guiding and working in over 50 events and Frazer working at many events and covering the businesses IT requirements. We are a family business... Julia became a professional travel agent in Julia has worked for travel retailers and wholesalers, plus of course many years as the office manager for our business. Julia is very travelled, having visited every continent and many islands. Darran first guided a group while working at Carnarvon Gorge in Central Queensland in He has a huge portfolio of photography work and accomplishments from guiding for several companies, to commercial shoots, books and to this day supplying articles for publications like Australian Photography Magazine. Darran has been involved with over 400 photo events around the world. Finally, World Photo Adventures is fully covered by Tour Operator Insurance. This is not standard travel insurance and is not available until a rigorous check of a businesses procedures and use of travel operators is made. 1. India 1 - Luxury Ganges Cruise - March 2. 3 Itinerary to photo adventure... DAY 1 - KOLKATA March 20 Meet in Kolkata today. (Or you might like to arrive at least one day earlier?) Julia can book extra accommodation to suit. No activities today until 5pm. We meet at this time for a workshop and details of your adventures to come. We include dinner. Accommodation and transfers are included. (D) DAY 2 KOLKATA / EMBARKATION Thursday - March 21 Breakfast and a morning walk with your guide. After lunch, we transfer to Bengal Ganga. Orientation tour of our beautiful 5.5 Star river boat. This boat alone will offer you unique images! However, it is the spacious decks that will offer you fantastic shoot options of a rarely travelled region of India. How exciting! (B,L,D - with special cultural performance.) DAY 3 - KOLKATA / KALNA Friday - March 22 Wake on board to the unique river life that only our luxury river boat can offer. You are shooting unique images immediately! We begin our luxury ship journey upstream, stopping at shantipur to explore the village and handloom colourful textiles as they are dried. These are waterways and roads less travelled! The river ship sails through areas where various European settlers had established East Indian Companies, leaving many remnants of their settlements from the 17th through 19th Centuries. The colours, people and scenery is amazing! (B/L/D) PRE TOUR Accommodation and services start for this tour - DAY 1. We suggest that you arrive at least 24 hours before this tour starts. This timing will give you a chance to relax and acclimatise to the new time zone. We generally commence booking pre/post tour accommodation/flights about 8/9 months before departure. FINAL ITINERARY Note that a final itinerary will be sent to you about one month before departure. DAY 4 - KALNA / MATIARI Saturday - March 23 This morning we enjoy a rickshaw ride through the city centre of Kalna, en route to the enchanting Rajbari complex, with the highest concentration of temples in the region. Bengal s mixture of temple architecture includes the Nabakailas Temples. Built in 1809 by the Bardhaman Maharaja, the complex contains 108, eight slope-roofed temples 74 in the outer circle and another 34 making an inner circle. Another complex features diverse architecture, including the Pratapeshwar Temple, built in Terra cotta plaques depict themes of Hindu epics, mythical life of Sree Chaitanya, images of Durga, and various aspects of day-to-day life in the region. Other temples on the site include Lalji Temple, the oldest in the complex (1739), and Krishnachandra Temple (1751). (B/L/D) PAGE 3

4 DAY 5 - MATIARI / BARANAGAR Sunday - March 24 Early morning shore-side bazaar is our first adventure today. Matiari is known for manufacturing beautiful handcrafted brass items, utilizing traditional methods passed down for generations. These master craftsmen utilize recycled copper to create exquisite pots, platters and more from their workshops in the village. We will photograph them at the various stages of work, plus the always present unique cultural images. We then continue our journey upstream. We sail past the battlefield of Plassey, where Robert Clive of British East India Company defeated the Mogul Nawabs in The rulers of Bengal and their French allies established the company rule in India, which spread through much of South Asia for the next 190 years. (B/L/D) DAY 6 - BARANAGAR / MURSHIDABAD Monday - March 25 After an on-board breakfast and morning sail on our luxury river boat, we stop to visit the village of Baranagar. A lovely example of life in rural India, this village is home to several temples dating from the 18th century ( ). Built by Rani (Queen) Bhabani, the landlady of Natore. The brick temples are considered to be among the best examples of Bengal terra cotta art. We then return to the ship for lunch and sail downstream. This afternoon we pass by charming countryside villages filled where locals greet us from the banks. We have many shoot opportunities from the extensive deck of our river boat, but this is a special experience. We approach Murshidabad, a hidden architectural gem along the Ganges with dramatic whitewashed colonial era structures. We visit the Hazarduari Palace, built during the reign of Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah ( AD) by an English architect, McLeod Duncan, in the Greek Doric style. The palace has more than a thousand real and false doors in the vast corridors, and is filled with colonial era antiques, artwork and manuscripts. Opposite to the Palace is a vast Imambara built by the Nawab for worship. We then take a scenic ride by local buggy to the Katra mosque. Built by the first Nawab of Murshidabad Murshid Quli Khan in the , this mosque has distinctive minarets from which the muezzin calls the faithful to Friday prayers. This evening we return for dinner and a special local cultural performance on-board. (B/L/D/Cultural performance) PAGE 4

5 DAY 7 - MURSHIDABAD / MAYAPUR / CHANDERNAGORE Tuesday - March 26 After a restful morning, observing the local life along the riverbanks, we stop in the village of Mayapur. Known as the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486) and considered an incarnation of Lord Krishna, this is the home of the Krishna Consciousness Movement also called ISKON. Guests can experience the fascinating culture of these followers and their ornate, colorful decorated statues of Krishna. Additionally, we will learn from Krishna followers leading the construction of the new temple located on the complex, due to be completed in 2016 during their Jubilee year. The new temple can be compared to the Vatican, and contains a 700,000 square-foot temple, measuring 340 feet high with a 75- foot domed planetarium. American Alfred B. Ford, the great grandson of Henry Ford, has funded more than 50% of the project. (B/L/D) DAY 8 - CHANDERAGORE / KOLKATA Wednesday - March 27 We begin the day in Chandernagore, established as a French colony in The French obtained permission from Ibrahim Khan, the then Nawab of Bengal to establish a trading post on the riverbanks of this city, which became a permanent French settlement in We will explore the French colonial buildings along the promenade, including the former French governor s residence (now converted to a museum that features an exhibition of items that depict life during this period). We then will visit the Sacred Heart Church of Chandernagore. We then return to the ship and continue our journey downstream to Kolkata. Wow what a day and so many images and experiences! (B/L/D) DAY 9 - KOLKATA / DISEMBARKATION - TOUR ENDS Thursday - March 28 Following breakfast, we will disembark the vessel and transfer to the Kolkata Airport. All services end. Check out Darran s work first-hand at: JULIA LEAL Professional travel consultant Exploring new territory is an adventure Julia has been savoring since childhood. Julia was born in Liverpool, England yet soon migrated to New Zealand with her family. She launched her travel career in 1979 in tropical Noosa, Queensland where she managed one of the first resorts in the region. Then it was back to Auckland, New Zealand to take up the role of travel consultant. Before long, Go International snapped Julia up as a travel rep. While leading an educational tour on Norfolk Island in 1989, Julia met Darran. Though her career remained trans-tasman for several years after, Julia is now in her element as a travel consultant extraordinaire for World Photo Adventures. PEARCE LEAL Explorer of Photography Pearce was born 1993 North Shore, New Zealand. He moved to Australia in 1995 and is currently based in Melbourne, Australia pursuing photographic challenges and projects. Check out Pearce s work first-hand at: FRAZER LEAL IT Wizard - Photographer At a very young age Frazer pulled apart computers to see how they worked and started to fix all sorts of technology. He first became serious with a camera when he borrowed his dad s camera while on a workshop on Fraser Island. He went on to win best photo with over 100 adult photographers. Frazer is our IT and Social Media manager. He designs and manages our website and helps to keep you up to date with our great adventures. PAGE 9
