3 Introduction Cornwall Outdoors is managed by Cornwall Council. Within Cornwall the unit operates three residential centres and one campsite. 1 Accreditation Where appropriate our centres have been inspected and awarded accreditation recognising the safety and quality of the service they deliver. These inspections are undertaken by the Adventure Activities Licensing Service on behalf of the HSE. Licence numbers for Centres providing adventurous in-scope activities can be found at the bottom of the page for each Centre. Risk Management Based on the outcome of their risk assessments all Centres have rigorous risk management processes in place. These are subject to inspection by the AALA. Each centre has a risk management statement which is available to visit leaders. If required, Risk assessments may be viewed during your pre-visit to the centre. Visit Leaders must complete risk assessments for all aspects of the visit for which they are responsible. Typically these include transport; overnight supervision; self-catering; and any activities they are leading. Staff Competence and Qualifications All Centre staff either hold a relevant National Governing Body qualification or are approved by appropriately experienced and qualified technical experts to deliver site-specific activities. This is in accordance with the requirements of the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations. Equipment The equipment provided at the Centres is fit for purpose and is regularly inspected and maintained. Inclusion The Centres have an inclusive philosophy and strive to ensure equality of opportunity. If your group has any individual needs please contact the Centre Manager to discuss how provision can be adapted to meet these needs. Sustainability Within all aspects of our operations we aim to work in a sustainable manner and minimise our impact on the environment. We would welcome your support in helping us achieve this. Insurance All schools, academies and youth groups must have appropriate insurance in place for outdoor education activities. This is available from Cornwall Council ( ) or you may make alternative arrangements. All our Centres have appropriate insurance in place to cover their operations. Safeguarding We meticulously follow statutory safeguarding requirements. We follow the Council s Safer Recruitment Policy and all staff are subject to checks via the DBS. All staff receive child protection training. Supervision During your visit it is the policy of Centre staff to work in partnership with the Visit Leaders. It is important to have clearly identifiable responsibilities. When Centre staff are leading activities they take joint responsibility alongside Visit Leaders for group members. At all other times Visit Leaders are responsible for the welfare and supervision of their group. a breath of fresh air

14 12 National Water Safety Management Programme Accredited by the Royal Life Saving Society the National Water Safety Management Programme is a suite of interlinked training awards, specifically designed to assist those organisations with employees who work in, or near water to meet their civil and statutory safety management obligations. The awards in this programme bridge the gap between no qualification and full lifeguard. It is not an award that will replace the lifeguard award but is an excellent way in which competency in and around water may be demonstrated. This programme is progressive so everyone starts with the foundation Basic Water Safety Awareness award ( a self-study unit followed by a half day guided Learning Unit) and may move into a range of Environment Specific awards ( including River, Still Water and Beach) leading, where required, to In Water Rescue Award. Overview Level 1: Basic Water Safety Awareness Module For those working or supervising near water who do not have a definite intention to get into the water, for example beach games. Level 2: Environment Specific Modules (River, Still Water and Beach) For those who have a greater likelihood of getting closer to or in the water but with definite intention to stay within standing depth, for example rock pooling. Level 3: In Water Rescue For those who are required to supervise people who are swimming out of their depth. A range of course dates are scheduled each term.
