BULLETIN Kernow Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association JAN 2006 Editor s Blurb This month a lively KHPA annual dinner on Saturday the 21st marked the passing of another year in the history of the KHPA - and it s been a good year overall, as summed up by Chairman Dave in his report. Well done to everyone for keeping up the motivation and dedication that is needed to keep Cornwall paragliding and hang gliding (hill and tow, free and powered) alive, accessible and on the map. Judging from what s already on the agenda for 2006 it looks like it s going to be an especially busy and exciting year coming up. Roll on Spring! The Frostbite competition was scheduled for this month, but the preferred weekend of the 21st-22nd was cancelled, and now we know that the following weekend of the 28th-29th has been canned too. A high pressure system has established itself firmly in place over the UK, and it is associated with brisk ENE - NE winds that just won t budge. (See the diagram below.) As for club flying, there have been two booming weekends seeing quite a turn-out so far this month - at Carbis Bay (paragliders and hang gliders) on Sunday 8th Jan, and at Vault Bay (paragliders) on the 22nd. There have been other days here and there. Al James has also had some long flights on his mosquito, an enviable new-found freedom for him. Phippsy s school has had a decent towing month. I m now taking over from Roger Full in printing off hard copies of the bulletin for those of you who are not reachable by . (Please try to be!) Many thanks to Roger for doing this job for the club for 10 years! Mark AS The anti-cyclone that is spoiling our fun What s Been Happening? The KHPA Annual Dinner, 21st Jan, 2006 Alan Phipps may have first showed signs of resistance but he delivered the goods for us and organised a first class annual dinner at the Seiner s Arms, Perranporth. And what a gettogether it was: packed out, with good food, good service, free wine from the old Tow Syndicate, a versatile DJ (Brian s son), a photo display, Chairman Dave s encouraging speech and trophy/ prize-givings, with cameras flashing throughout! Here are some of the highlights: The Chairman s Report Dave Stevens had this to say in his speech: Negatives for the year were: We lost a club member - John Atkinson We lost the Carbis Bay site KHPA Bulletin January 2006 page 1 :
Positives for the year were: We got the Carbis Bay site back. We got the Higher Kennegy site back. We excelled in competitions over Graham Phipps won the British Open Series. Patrick Buxton was on the winning Bleriot Cup team. The KHPA team were runners up in the paragliding British Club Challenge, out of more than 30 registered teams. as a force to be reckoned with. The first recipient of this trophy, etched on the plaque, was Billy Scott, 25 years ago in 1985! KHPA Crash Trophy There was some confusion as to where this was. The editor s hunch is that it is with kitesurfer Andy Larder who has now made a full recovery from his mishap in Olu Deniz. So someone is yet to receive this trophy. It has been a very good year for our club overall and this next year is going to be outstanding too - it s going to be our year! Trophies and Prizes The following club prizes were awarded during the annual dinner by Chairman Dave: Kernow Hang Gliding XC league - plus 50 from CHAPS This was awarded to Steve Hawken. Kernow Paragliding XC league - plus 50 from CHAPS This was awarded to the versatile Al James. Next year s winners for these trophies have to beat this year s distances to get the full 50; otherwise they get only 25 from CHAPS ( Flying ace Phippsy doing his bit for the media. Frostbite paragliders Paragliders made a concerted effort to hold the Frostbite comp on the weekend of the 21st - 22nd, but it didn t quite come off! On the 21st, St Agnes was soarable for a brief period in the morning with Mark B. doing well on his tandem, but the wind dropped and pilots reassembled at the top of Carne Brea (pic below) where despite the light winds there was evidence of the occasional thermal drifting through. Al J. with 50 in his pocket; John T. wishing he d registered his flights! (Photo: Annie Anderson) Best XC Uk and Best XC World Both trophies awarded to Graham Phipps (96.7 km - UK; km in Spain). The Kernow Adventure Sports Trophy This was awarded to Mark Ashton Smith for his work on getting the KHPA website onto cyberspace KHPA Bulletin January 2006 page 2
Three pilots took off in the hope of connecting with something (including Chairman Dave who launched as a buzzard circled above him in a light thermal), but everyone quickly bombed out. Sunday the 22nd was a good soaring day at Vault Bay for those who could face the maze of a trip there. There were a dozen or so paragliders from both Cornwall and Devon, enjoying a full day s flying (with Mark B. landing in the car park as the sun was setting). Dave made it twice to cloudbase in the morning thermals, but for most of the day the best that could be had was ft ATO. Not opting for a ridge run, the Frostbite comp wasn t called on this day. [For those of you who have not been to Vault Bay, it is a spectacular and friendly site, with views of the coast stretching for miles, and fantastic ridge lift when it s on. Check out the site guide on the website. Well recommended. But it is difficult to predict when it s working, seeming to have its own micro-climate. - Ed] The next few days are dominated by a high pressure bringing stiff winds, so paras may now be looking at February 4th - 5th for the Frostbite. Frostbite hang gliders The Frostbite for hang gliders had been provisionally called for the weekend of the 28th - 29th Jan as at least the temperatures looked right for it. However, the brisk NE winds forecast for the Sat have proved to be a little too brisk, so the comp has been postponed until further notice! Please check with Phippsy ( ) or the KHPA website for when it is going to be held in February - fingers crossed. As in previous years the comp will be sponsored by Cornwall Hang Gliding and Paragliding Services ( so come and win some prizes! Phippsy Mosquito Action Al James has been getting value for money from his new mosquito. He says he was in the air for the whole week before Christmas, only landing to find food. He s got some great photos from this trip, soon to be up on the club website. On Saturday 21st Jan he took off from North Cliffs and flew to Graham s tow site (Fiddler s Green?) where he refuelled and had lunch. He then set off again, finally touching down in St Austell. Versatility is Al s middle name. The enjoyment he is getting out of his flying is a call to all of us to learn how to fly everything possible. Kernow Tow Group (next meet 1st Feb) Mark AS posted a query about the use of bailing twine on the Paragliding Forum ( and got numerous helpful replies, including this one from Tony Eaton: Hi Mark, I am a winch operator at Green Dragons where we have been using bailing twine for the last four years. we have found it ok. The lines start to fray after a period of time. fraying is caused by the line running on the ground or being pulled through rough guides and surfaces on the winch. When fraying appears the line is still ok to use but line brakes are on the way. Just cut out the frayed line and tie the ends back together. We winch up solo and tandem paragliders plus hanggliders no probs. We operate on a farm so we have a supplier on our door step. It comes in rolls of 8600 feet and in different braking strains the one we use is 270kg it cost about 30 a roll. Any more information just ask we have three winch operators familiar with this line. This is good news for the fledgling Tow Group obviously. This saves Chairman Brian risking a fall doing a breaking strain test himself. Graham has come up with a good-value package to qualify two winch operators (initially) over two days of towing. Brian and Mark Bultler have expressed interest in being the first to qualify. For this to work however it is important that as many tow-converted paragliders turn up on those towing days. Please help support this effort! If it doesn t happen now, the Tow Group is less likely to be operational in the summer when we ll be gagging to do some thermal flying or practice acro on beautiful nil wind days. Come to the meeting (1st Feb, Bird in Hand Pub, Hayle pm) if you want to support this. With a few of us turning up for some towing fun, it will not cost much at all - and we ll have 2 operators to help us later on. And don t forget, as reported in detail in December s Bulletin (available on the club website), the South Devon Hang Gliding and Paragliding club are hosting a club coach course on 11th & 12th Feb Cost is 25. It is needed if you want to become a tow coach! Exclusive Coady comp mentoring There have been rumours that Coady is going to take John T. under his wing (!) and find ways to get him into more (individual) competitions this year - perhaps the British Open? John notched up loads of XC kilometers last summer - enough to put him high up in the national XC league rankings if he was interested in signing up to this. Watch this space. For others who are interested in comps beyond the BCC (e.g. UK XC league) - remember that you need a Pilot Rating! KHPA Bulletin January 2006 page 3

Lone hang glider at Sennen... The unknown hang glider pilot photographed at Sennen sent the Editor an Twas me as graham has probably told you by now! I phoned him up to get his recommendation on how to remove silage/muck/s*** from my sail after landing in a field just back from the top! And yes the wind did get up a bit... penetration fine on the front of lift a bit more difficult behind, and I do know the owners of the land as I live there.] Also it was my second launch from my garden mounted ramp! Excellent bulletin. Cheers Martin Jones I ll finish mowing the lawn in a sec... Taking the Plunge in Lanzarote! After a recent trip to Lanzarote I thought that I would put pen to paper to share some of my experiences that others may benefit from. I have only been flying a few years and have not quite cracked triple figure hours so I still have plenty to learn. The first days flying at Famara (NW facing) was quite uneventful, the sky was mainly overcast and the wind direction off to the north so once away from the lift band flying was confined to the ridge. Despite this the scenery was still quite stunning looking north towards the huge 2000 feet sea cliffs, the island of Grasiosa and Famara bay. Day two of flying took us to the north of the island to a low take off site called Mala. When we arrived at take off there were maybe six paragliders up and two stiffies. I had been informed that the hangy pilots were very hot and experienced guys. I noticed that the paraglider pilots were scratching their butts off to get from take off to an area of decent lift due to the slight gradient of the slope KHPA Bulletin January 2006 page 5
and light breeze. During their traverse across to the lift zone they were only three metres above the boulder slope.. After reviewing the conditions and watching what was going on I decided that it was too light for me to fly. The decision was then taken to head to Mirador del Rio at the very north of the island with a 1700 feet take off from the sea cliffs. On arrival we spotted a hang glider already up and getting some good height gains. The views from the rigging up area were stunning and could only get better once airborne. It wasn t long before I was rigged up and running down the mild gradient avoiding sizeable rocks and out into a huge bowl that dropped away dramatically. To the left hand side of the bowl was a spine ridge stretching out 1 4 mile into the sea, this was soarable with height gains all the way to its tip and beyond. As the day went on the soaring side of this spine became shaded and the leeward side in bright sunlight. The lift was as smooth as silk being a coastal site with the occasional sea thermal coming through. Behind me on take off were two low airtime pilots, within an hour they were up and flying too. After half an hour or so it was to my absolute horror and disbelief that I noticed one of these pilots venturing over the leeward side of the spine at no more than 100 feet ATO. I had taken the odd look for any thermic activity along the convergence but at 400 ft + ATO. He headed out even further from the spine towards the sea, why I don t know, only to be bashed around by some fairly nasty rotor resulting in a rapid loss of height. Instead of turning 180 degrees and bombing out on a flat salt pan area easily within reach he continued to fly out over the sea towards the point of the blade. As I flew further out along the spine the glider in the sea up ended and sank. I could not believe what had unfolded before me and was thinking the worst as I could not see any indication of the pilot. The three of us remaining in the air immediately headed for the landing field at the bottom of the cliff a kilometre or so away. The two low airtime pilots had been in radio contact with each other and also their retrieve driver at the landing field but neither had managed to establish contact with Numb Nutz during or after the incident. As I started my rapid descent I was aware that I needed to compose myself for the approach and landing so as not to add to the casualty list. My thoughts were also of getting the other low airtime pilot down in one piece. Once on the ground we left our kit and raced off to the nearby port to raise the alarm and attempt to get on a boat out to the point. There were boats around but no owners so we then just had to wait for the emergency services to do their thing. Initially the pilot was spotted on the rocks at the end of the point by a passing ferry to the island. They were unable to get in close enough to safely pick him up so that was left for the Cruz Riojo helicopter mobilised from Gran Canaria. How, I still do not know, the anonymous pilot had managed to unclip out of his harness after the water landing and swim free. By all accounts his helmet provided significant buoyancy, once removed, to assist in his swim to the rocks. The pilot was winched from the rocks and flown back to the take off point where he was checked over by an ambulance crew and accosted by the local television media. Shaken but not stirred, sir? I should point out that the sea cliffs dropped straight into the water with no shore either side of the spine. I was flying above Numb Nutz at feet ATO but still over the spine and in lift shouting and screaming for him to turn around but to no avail. I helplessly followed his path out to the end of the spine before I had to turn back into lift. I shot back off downwind over the take off area where I spotted some people on the ground and shouted for them to call the Police. They gestured that they understood. It later transpired they were paragliding pilots scoping out the site. When I returned to a point where I had visual contact, the glider was in the water 10 metres from the point. I could not see the pilot as I was 600 feet ATO which was 1800 feet ASL. So there were a few little lessons that were learnt that day. If I d had a radio I could have warned other pilots of the violent turbulence I had experienced on the ridge convergence (fortunately I got hammered upwards 400 ft). The instant you take off look for your bomb out option as well as areas of lift. The moment you experience any trouble look for a dry bomb out area to land. Water resistant radios could assist if you are going to take them swimming or even a plastic casing therefore enabling you to raise the alarm and confirm your condition. Clips on harness leg loops definitely increase your chances of a rapid disembarkation from your harness. Helmets make good swimming aids. Wear bright clothing (he wasn t). KHPA Bulletin January 2006 page 6
Carry a sharp knife in your harness pocket. Do not land in water.. Two days later we visited the scene of the crime by boat in an attempt to recover the glider. Unable to hire scuba equipment due to permits required to dive in a protected marine reserve, we snorkelled it. One of the most bizarre sights I have seen is a fully rigged hang glider on the seabed in 20m of water. Why did I not have a camera? I managed to recover the harness but the drag on the glider was too much when it was grappled. Already a significant amount of damage had occurred to the sail. That we thought was the end of it until the harness and parachute were washed out in fresh water. Expert advice was sort to repack the parachute only to find out that a member of the pilots home club had sold him a 25 year old oversized parachute. A fitting end for an Avian Rio at the Mirrador del Rio don t you think? Mike Connatty Report from Graham s Cornwall Hang Gliding and Paragliding Services ( was a good year for us with some big and exciting changes taking place. The year got off to a quick start with the first days teaching on January and so things looked good from the start. With 38 days training through the year the weather was fairly kind especially when taking into account that we were away for a total of 38 days at competitions and another 25 gaining qualifications and experience. The big change was going part time at my normal job so allowing more time (but less money) for flying and teaching. To make this work we moved into Tow training alongside our Hill training and also took on teaching Paragliding. Towing got underway in October and has resulted in an increase in useable days and things look promising but there is still a long way to go before things are sorted, it is yet to be seen if it will be viable! All this activity resulted in 6 HG EPC s, 7 HG CPC s, 3 HG Tow endorsements, 7 Pg Tow endorsements, 4 FLPA (HG) endorsements, 1 British Open Series Champion (HG) and a place in the British Team for the European Championships (HG) this year so we can t complain! Pilots to watch from last years students have to be Alan James who converted to Hang Gliding in March and is now one of the most regular pilots on the hill, tow and more lately power scene and Hakim who learnt from scratch in a matter of weeks late in the year and it wouldn t surprise me to see both of them in competitions this spring. For pure tenacity Cathy Lawrence deserves a mention and congratulations on achieving what she set out to do despite the odd set back. Waiting for the sun to come round, Fomara Thanks go out to the KHPA for their continuing support, the Tow Syndicate for the use of the winch before they decided to sell it, the pilots who came out on those early tow days for the winch men to practice on, Paul and Gay for their help both on the tow field and on the hill and especially for the coaching of ex students, Tim for being a good winch man, the numerous people who have helped in many ways both practically and with advice, ideas and motivation, Paul Dustan for his technical and welding skills, OOHH and to Kaz for letting it happen and her support. 2006??? 8 KHPA Cross Country League for 2006! Tim Jones reports First, here are the final results of the 2005 crosscountry league. Not a classic year, and we only had more than a one horse race after much haranguing from the league coordinator! pos name glider total (km) total (m) 1 Steve Hawken HG Alan James PG Perhaps we can make this year a bit more exciting by posting ALL cross countries to me as soon after the flight as we can. I have put all the members I am aware of into teams to see if some sort of team spirit will encourage people to (safely) push their boundaries and commit to flying cross country and then submitting their scores. My apologies if you aren t included in a team, it s nothing personal. Let me know and I will put you in a team. If you are not in your best friend s team, and would like to be, I can possibly do something about that as well. If you know a name is in the list but it should not be, please also let me know, so we can slim down the teams a little. Happy Cross Countrying. Rules for the Kernow Cross Country League The competition is open to all pilots, of all abilities and either discipline, and is supposed to be fun. There are two trophies, one for the highest mileage scored by a paraglider pilot, and one for the highest mileage scored by a hang glider pilot. Prizes of each have been offered by a friendly local dealer (Cornwall Hang gliding and Paragliding Service, of Illogan - a fine service if I may say so) for the winners, which will be doubled up to if the total mileage exceeds the previous year s winning mileage. To be eligible for inclusion in the league a flight must have started in Cornwall, and must be registered with me, Tim Jones (tel , e mail: tjtjones@talk21.com), within a month of the flight. Photographs, GPS traces and or launch and landing witnesses will not be required, but flights must be registered with launch and landing grid references. The minimum distance to qualify is 3km (1.86 miles). Scores will be calculated from the total mileage of a maximum of five flights, of which the fifth must be a defined flight (out and return, triangle or flight to goal). I look forward to being swamped with entries this year, and will try to update scores each month in the Bulletin. 9 January Notices KHPA emergencies protocol Action to be taken in the event of any emergency or incident (flying or otherwise) which requires an immediate response attributable to the club. At the 2005 AGM it was agreed that a quorum of 3 Association Officers is empowered to speak and act for the members in this eventuality. The quorum can comprise any of the following association officers: Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, any of the Safety Officers, Sites Officers and the Publicity Officer. What a club member should do is contact one of the club officers and pass on all of the available details so that he can contact at least two others and produce a response on behalf of the club. Remember that the home telephone number for the secretary is on your membership card. [Chris Whittaker] KHPA Subscriptions Please get your 15 subscriptions for 2006 to the Treasurer, Paul, as soon as possible. His address is: Paul Howes, KHPA Membership, Trecarne, Carnmeal Downs, Helston, Cornwall, TR13 9NL. Get your bulletin by ! Since Roger Full is no longer able to offer the club free use of a photocopier, the club is now subsidising the printing and posting of the bulletin. Please help relieve pressure on club funds by subscribing the bulletin by (or download it from if you are able to. Publicity Given how well the KHPA has done last year, Mark Butler has proposed that we attempt to get more press coverage this year - whether in the local papers, national mags or Skywings. This PR would benefit both our club and our schools. Let s knock out some articles like we did back in the 90s! Paintball Social Chairman Dave ( ) needs names and figures for paintballing which has provisionally been pencilled in for the 19th February. Please let Dave know if you want some of the action! British Club Challenge 2006! After the club s success in the paragliding BCC last year, comp organiser John Trewartha is keen to get two teams together for Please contact him if you are interested in participating. It is invaluable experience for big hill flying in thermals in a supportive, friendly club atmosphere - an important progression for any pilot. Check out the comp website at: If you pull up the results page you can see how well the KHPA did in 2005! Phippsy ( ) will be putting out feelers for a full hang gliding team - to improve on the Coady one man show last year! Come on hangers, join in the fun with your floppy brethren. Frank Shaw Karl Sweeny, Chairman of the South Devon Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club has informed us that paraglider pilot Frank Shaw has died in a motorcycling accident. The funeral was on Friday 20th. We offer our condolences to Jane, Frank s partner. Paraglider for Sale! Dave s partner Debs is selling her red Medium Firebird Z-One with a 4th Dimension Extreme harness for 500. This is great value for money since the wing is in very good condition with only superficial repair work. The glider is going for 400 alone, and the harness for 125. [I flew Deb s Z-One at the Blorenge during last year s BCC and did my first ever XC flight on it! It was an almost religious experience. See photos in the Blorenge gallery on the KHPA website! Ed.] For more info contact Dave at Topic for Debate! Wendy wind blows Chairman Dave has suggested that the club discuss whether a wendy windblows or two (St Agnes and/or Vault Bay) may be worth investing in, assuming we can find a site, a mains line and a telephone line. Let the debate begin! KHPA Bulletin January 2006 page 9
