2 WELCOME TO THE PARK A grandiose landscape, a glacial valley with spectacular walls and its Acropole that rises to over 1048 meters, which can be seen from the valley or challenged by adventurers. Parc National des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie offers a spectacular combination of valleys cut deep into a range of high mountains. The Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie are among the highest rock faces East of the Rockies! The importance of the elevations (more than 800 m), the beauty of the landscapes and the particular course of the Rivière Malbaie make this an exotic site. Come and take a trip to the heart of the Land of Menaud, where time stops, but where the show continues. This national park (224.9 km 2 ), has the privilege of being one of the core zones of the Biosphere Reserve of Charlevoix. THE AMERICAN MARTEN, THE ANIMAL EMBLEM OF THE PARK The American Marten lives in coniferous forest and mixed forests of the park which constitute its preferred habitat. Throughout the year, it captures small mammals and birds. It also feeds on berries in the summer. Members of the Mustelidae family, it is a clever climber who is active more at dawn and dusk. Discover the Rally of Martha for the whole family. Find out more! Find out more at sepaq.com/hautesgorges QUÉBEC NATIONAL PARKS ANNUAL CARD Québec s national parks offer a one-of-a-kind experience. The trail leads up to a viewpoint and through a maple stand filled of colors in fall. Le Belvédère Without too much effort, go to the lookout that provides an astonishing view on the valley. Le Pied-des-Sommets Take just a few minutes to stretch your legs and hike up this trail to a lookout where you will get a totally different view of Félix-Antoine-Savard mountain. Be informed. La Chute-du-Ruisseau-Blanc A pleasant hike that leads up to the foot of a spectacular 45 metres high waterfall. A destination in itself for those who will go to L Équerre by bike, on foot or in a canoe. Le Riverain This trail offers very nice viewpoints of the valley and the Cran des Érables. It is covered with fine gravel and is located on the west bank of Rivière Malbaie. If you want to take a break, there are picnic areas along the way where you can contemplate the beauty of the site. L Acropole-des-Draveurs This trail transports you through a forest universe up to the first peak, after which you will cross an alpine environment where flora and landscapes steal the show. A spectacular view on the Malbaie River valley and the surrounding peaks awaits you there. This is a challenging trail that requires good physical fitness. Les Rapides In many places, you will feel the trembling from the rapids where it gets its name. This trail offers the opportunity to start at Le Cran campground to reach Le Draveur Visitors Centre via the Pin-Blanc campground. This trail allows many exit points on the park main road. 12 CONSERVE FOR TOMORROW MARGARITIFERA MARGARITIFERA No, this is not the name of a new trendy cocktail, but rather the name of a freshwater mussel, the Freshwater pearl mussel, whose presence has been confirmed in the Rivière Malbaie. Thanks to the collaboration of a specialist in freshwater mussels at the ministère de la Forêt, de la Faune et des Parcs, the park team is more familiar with this species and its habitats. It has been identified as threatened or vulnerable for many reasons related to the degradation of the quality of the river habitat and the decline of some fish populations. If you see any, please avoid touching them and moving them. Mussels are particularly fond of Atlantic salmons for breeding. The larvae ejected from the shells attach themselves to the fish, where they develop. At the right moment, they drop off and continue to grow in the bottom of the rivers. CÉLIA S STORY Célia is the name of a female eagle nesting on the territory of the park. Since 2016, she wears a small backpack that allows officials from the ministère de la Forêt, de la Faune et des Parcs to track her movements in order to know the occupation she makes of the territory. Thanks to the data collected, we know that she returns from her winter migration in mid-march and that she will leave again in early November. En 2016, the presence of eaglets was confirmed, which was not the case in In 2017, Célia completed its migration of approximately 1600 km in 25 days (64 km/day), from the park to West Virginia. SMALL CHARCOALS THAT SAY A LOT We have very little information on the origin of the tundras covering certain peaks of the park. This is what wanted to know the team of Serge Payette (Laval University), by initiating a project to identify the causes of the presence of this type of forest at our latitudes. Is it because of the harsh climate or the passing of fires? In the Summer of 2017, a characterization of the summit of Mont Élie was completed. Harvested samples will be dated at carbon 14 to make the past talk. To be continued! The first analyzes of charcoals confirm the presence of Jack pine. A warmer climate was to prevail at the time of the presence of the boreal species. DNA, DNA: TELL ME WHAT IS HIDING IN OUR LAKES? Porc-Épic lake, located west of the park, is unique in that it supports populations of brook trout and Artic Charr. The latter species is rather rare in southern Quebec and is likely to be designated threatened or vulnerable. To verify if the species is present in 2 other lakes nearby, Lakes Argentenay and Châteauguay, we applied the environmental DNA method, developed by Louis Bernatchez (Laval University). This method consists of taking water samples, filtering them and analyzing organic residues that may contain the Artic Charr s DNA. Results to come! 13
