Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 39 of 82 McPhee

Fishing open up more marinas Limited would be the best thing. Needs grazed would keep fire danger down at all places We need to use this to protect landowners from too much game. Motorcycle Hunting in Sage hen area all uses, camping, hunting, rv, horseback Motorized Summer All rec uses. Need emphasis on recreation Mountain Biking Excellent Mountain Biking. Wildlife habitat and limited roads Mountain Biking One of the best trails in the county -actually the state Is current use pattern Camping, boating, fishing, (although water quality problems.) This was used years ago for more things. This area has easy access Multi use around lake motorized. will help the fuels reduction in heavily used recreation areas, and bring close to private development Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 40 of 82 McPhee

Municipal Water Use McPhee Reservoir near Dolores is takeout for Summit Ridge water district. - Sanitary faculties, paper handling, petroleum products is important. Continue Multi- use as much as possible Power Boats Boating Winter range for wildlife North end has great eagle and other wildlife habitat East side of McPhee is vital wildlife habitat. It is the wrong place for a motorized trail out of town Wildlife habitat and non motorized recreation The east side of the reservoir is a critical habitat area especially for elk winter range. Need to continue to close roads in this area to maintain wildlife habitat. The area east of the reservoir is prime habitat Mesas Primary Use Icon Leave it all open to all uses to all people Primary Note Public lands should be open to all groups Use for all people & Motorized Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 41 of 82 Mesas

Public lands keep in multiple use adhere to Brunot Treaty Their should be more trails for and a certain time that you can go up and pack out your game between non hunting hours I want all groups and interests to work together & share the landscape for all purposes I hope to continue to use the willow Creek Divide area for ing and other traditional uses riding on trails only multi use Winter snowmobiling I have seen most of this area on. My time off is limited & my health fragile, so it is a way to be in nature. Use basically all of the forest at one time or another. We clean Sage Hen, The monument, Boggy Draw, Williams Divide I primarily like 's but hope all uses remain open as well as roads and trails. Do not close any roads Back Country Camping Bear Creek Drainage -critical to water quality -outstanding backcountry potential non-motorized use Back Country Skiing Taylor Mesa Road provides an excellent Cross Country skiing opportunity Backpacking My uses of the landscape (in my backyard) include backpacking, hiking, cross country skiing, car camping, woodgathering, I am involved with the landscape often Car Camping The highest elevation places - Hillside drive top choice--then top of Taylor Mesa Fishing Declining fish habitat & population due to heavy metal contamination in Dolores River from abandoned mines and active gravel mining Forest Health Entire unit is in need of thinning and down materials removed Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 42 of 82 Mesas

Forest Health Forest Health Concerned with overall forest health: impacts on various animal habitats are there things we can do to enhance habitat for me health of mammals, birds, amphibians, etc. Preservation of the natural environment for quiet respectful human activity Forest Health Save old growth aspen do not harvest so often & save some areas where it is never out Forest Health When I say Forest Health I mean managing it for a habit tat / non human value based perspective. Manage for overall biodiversity Maintain all allotment at full numbers Maintain all grazing for fuel control in all allotment Because if we don't graze we will probably burn it down through manmade or natural disaster Maintain all grazing allotments at full numbers All areas other than private lands, main and first encumbrance by US forest Service was and still is the adjudication of grazing allotments Taylor Mesa is a good grazing area along with the rest of the Mesa's area I run cows on the tenderfoot area & this area is what i know the best is light in my area and important to me The grazing is very important part of the forest Maintain all allotment at full numbers Must be maintained for the health of the forest as well as the economy in the west The grazing needs to be kept for a fire hazard reducer. Our area is a agricultural area and grazing is a large and important factor. Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 43 of 82 Mesas

Multiple uses Protect historic values and uses Good Summer areas Very important to keep active helps all multiple uses Stoner Mesa Trail - too many 's on Upper trail- There should be none Being able to get into the backcountry w/some solitude This area has wonderful & varied hiking (and Fishing) opportunities I roam this area a lot. Hunting & logging where needed & hunting Hunting Nipple mountain area not accessible to hunters as it used to be Hunting Excellent Hunting area. Could share with grazing. This area probably should be multi- use Hunting Economic major use. Value this land for many other uses Hunting Many of us Hunt this entire area- which involves pre hunt hiking to scout, camping while in season & habitat to support calving and holding animals. Motorcycle Some of the best single track motorcycling trails remaining in the state of Colorado Trails are very well maintained by state ohv funds Motorcycle Except for restricted wilderness areas Mountain Biking I like to ride mountain bikes in this entire area Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 44 of 82 Mesas

Mountain Biking Beautiful area- epic trails fun! We use this area for all rec. including motorized vehicles We would be unable to make a living without NFS graze Multiple use is preferred This is a good area for multiple use Areas without roads should be left un-roaded My 87 year old Uncle would like to keep going into the forest Use for all people etc. Watershed for domestic and irrigation water Take care of area and use it Non Motoriezed Bear Creek is a pristine Drainage not suitable for motorized traffic Non Motoriezed Non Motorized Headwaters of Bear Creek, Little Bear & Rough Canyon are unique, pristine areas that have big game, fish, etc. and provide backpacking etc. Need to keep motorized vehicles off of everything except Hillside road. Bear Creek is a pristine drainage not suitable for Motorized traffic Some uses are seasonal and use plans need to be year around Non Motorized Stop off road atv travel. constrain to a few trails/ roads. Very destructive to the environment & wildlife, very much including noise Non Motorized River Running I say this because there has been a proliferation of motorized use. There should be absolutely no "open areas". The whole area needs a comprehensive travel management plan. The entire Dolores river It was really a toss up with hiking but someone has to speak up for river running Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 45 of 82 Mesas

River Running Wildlife habitat, horseback & packing, hiking, solitude forest, & range health rivers & streams Snow Shoeing Flats be low Dead Man's Favorite sport also mix with hiking which would be above Williams Timber Harvest Keep open for multiple uses Timber Harvest Local economy is dependant on timber forest health is also an issue for me Timber Harvest Timber harvest is important to maintain forest health and not waste resources. Downed timber and too thick tree stands are detrimental and create fire danger Traditional Uses Maximize the traditional use on as many acres as possible Great Upper & mid level habitat Stoner Mesa Priest Gulch Few Trails, low human populations Stoner Mesa Priest Gulch Birding Backcountry areas Missionary Primary Use Icon Primary Note, Hunting, Backpacking, 4 wheeling: All of these and more uses on this section Existing system and "decommissioned roads are excellent opportunities to accommodate this growing sport without disturbing more land Backpacking mountain view great not too long a hike access to entrance to overview of lovely mountains pristine wilderness Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 46 of 82 Missionary

Car Camping Along roads at undeveloped sites Car Camping Have used this area / road for car camping/day hiking- appear to be popular use as I am never the only one up there Car Camping Henderson lake a great place to drive to and car camp then hike, fish etc. Forest Health I'm interested in seeing the forest restore itself naturally, with as little "management " as possible. Wildlife habitat, riparian health Forest Restoration due to extensive burning in P zone. stabilization of soils not logging on steep slopes no grazing on steep slopes essential Forest Restoration North Half forest restoration, south half forest health Forest Restoration following the burn the key is restoration of soils etc vegetation Forest Restoration Forest Restoration Primarily this area is receiving forest restoration as a result of the Missionary Ridge fire. To my understanding the area has been closed to grazing & was closed for safety for hiking and other recreational uses following the fire, this is what is being done, and should be done Forest Restoration Landscape wide has occurred for a century on this landscape interrupted by fire Multiple use, grazing, timber harvest permits good for 4 months of the year longer than other uses (hunting) etc. At this time it appears that grazing predominates. However this watershed needs more emphasis on watershed & managed recreation use because of accessibility to the urban Primary use Landscape wide Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 47 of 82 Missionary

for watershed management grazing is the are old way to manage forest grasses and overgrowth/fire flues The country is quite remote, 1 main road, 1 lake, no camping. Excellent for grazing, traditional summer pasture- pre forest service Between 8,000 ft & 10,500 ft elevation Bikes on allotments, gates need to be closed is essential to the agricultural community of SW Colorado & is necessary to keep ag viable in the private lands, of SW Colorado & helps keep open space in the private lands of our area. This keeps family farm & ranches viable. Represents several agricultural operations, people have been running cattle here for 100 years & getting along with all recreational activities I think that grazing is real important for ranches and to keep the forest healthy Primary area for grazing control grazing to help with prevention fire control Lime mesa During my summer on missionary ridge I saw more hikers than cattle, bikers or even wildlife from the south end of Missionary to Henderson Lake high priority Trail head to beautiful alpine I am not familiar with this area but some friends like the hiking areas. Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 48 of 82 Missionary

This area used by members of Seniors Outdoors Great vistas, good trails, wildlife viewing Haflin creek trail- popular hiking trail Haflin Creek is used by many Locals, as well as the handful of other trails adjacent to Haflin and to the north (Spud Henderson,Steven) The missionary ridge area provides nice hiking opportunities due to the established roads an proximity to Durango Maintain roads so can access great areas by car and then hike i.e. Mountain View west w/o backpacking Horse Packing Horse Packing Excellent opportunity for hikers and horseback. Disperse horse impact from packing outfits when accessing wilderness area. It is also an easy pack for camps in this area. horseback trips into area hunting too Horse Packing Where trails are established but not shared by motorized vehicles Horse Packing We take clients into this area for hunting and pack trips Hunting Hunting and Hunting Need road access for various areas for hunter access and rescue or fire protectionkeep roads open - maintain the extreme end Motorcycle See San Juan Trail Riders proposed trail system Mountain Biking haflin creek along Stevens for hiking Mountain Biking MTB single track & old roads: Missionary ridge trail, Haflin, Stevens, Wallace, Pretty, Red ridge road Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 49 of 82 Missionary

Mountain Biking Great riding close to town (Durango) never seem to run into too many hikers or horse back riders Mountain Biking I am very interested in seeing the Haflin and Stevens Creek area on the way to recovery by further planting & seeding specifically for Mountain Biking Mountain Biking Lots of roads and trails for motorized use The many uses of this area are mainly livestock grazing and motorized recreation with some camping, hiking, and hunting. This is obviously a Multiple Use Landscape important considerations are the wilderness interface & Animas Valley Watershed Log It Landscape wide maintain current opportunities heavily used area many different uses and groups MR area is very divers and well suited to a wide range of uses. Easy access, heavily roaded, important wildlife habitat to meet a diverse array of uses with out degradation is important variety of uses all season lots of different activities Due to existing roads and uses - Multiple use should be maintained, although roadless areas should be maintained as roadless& non-motorized Municipal Water Use Missionary Ridge is already multiple use - doesn't make sense to change it particularly after the fire. I am concerned about revegeation efforts - exotic vegetation eradication - those areas should be restricted Protect all existing and future water diversion points pursuant to Colorado law, & private property rights Nature Observation great beauty from H550 Nature Observation nature should be just that natural no changes necessary Monday, August 15, 2005 Page 50 of 82 Missionary
