1 327FLT/2011/G01 AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE CADETS 327 FLIGHT JOINING INSTRUCTION NO G01/2011 GLIDING COURSES 2011 Introduction 16 Correllis Street Harrington Park NSW Congratulations on your selection to attend the Gliding Course to be held at Bathurst. Activity Outline 2. Throughout the course, Members will spend most of their time at the aerodrome, and when not flying will be occupied by briefings, administration or ground handling tasks to ensure the operation remains safe and efficient. When not at the aerodrome, Members will be involved in theory instruction appropriate to their experience level, and will have small amounts of stand down time. 3. Flying Training will be conducted by a Qualified Flying Instructor(QFI) holding a Gliding Federation of Australia (GFA) Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 Instructor Rating. The gliding operation will be conducted by 327FLT which operates under the GFA. The QFI(s) are approved to conduct the AAFC operation by the club's Chief Flying Instructor. The gliders utilised have the appropriate levels of insurance to cover flying training, pilot/passenger, hull and third party liability. Flying training will only be carried out under the supervision of a Level 2 (or higher) Instructor in accordance with the GFA Operations Manual. Personal Preparation 4. It is important that you read this document carefully, and are thoroughly prepared for Gliding Course. 5. All cadets attending their first (Basic stage) gliding course and all pre-solo (Intermediate stage) cadets are required to download the Pre Course Learning Package from the 327FLT website (see the Download Page). Cadets are to bring this package to course, and will undergo a written exam based on its content. A satisfactory pass must be attained before commencing flying training. Forms and Documentation 6. You must ensure that your PH299 ( Blue Book ) is fully correct and up to date before arriving at the Gliding Course. 7. You must complete TWO copies of the TR66 Parental Consent Form stating clearly your MEDICARE NUMBER and signed by your parents. This must be the correct 01 Dec 09 version. Have this document ready to present to the Detachment staff on arrival at the course. Required versions of this form are available via CadetOne, or here: (file: consent Form - AAFC Activities [TR66]). 8. One TR66 must accompany the application. The second must accompany the cadet to/from the course. 9. You must also have a completed Gliding Course Application Package and submitted prior to the closing date. This form is available from the 327 Web page on the Administration page. Medical Conditions, Allergies and Dietary requirements
2 2 10. It is important that you inform the DETCDR as soon as possible if you have any medical conditions, allergies or special dietary requirements, as well as stating them clearly on your Parental Consent Form. This will ensure that your needs are taken into account when attending the activity. 11. Cadets should also arrive at camp with copies of any required medical management plan. 12. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is unable to provide a severe food allergy free environment (such as from peanuts) in relation to the consumption of food during cadet activities. Such a risk may be life threatening for people who suffer from a severe food allergy. Parents may consider it is in their child s best interest not to allow participation of their child in the proposed activity. In the event that the child is allowed to attend a catered cadet activity, the parents may choose to provide, at their own expense, sufficient food to cover the duration of the activity. 13. If you or your parents have any concerns on these matters, you should speak with your SQN staff. Foot care 14. Lack of foot care and correct preparation of the feet is the most common cause of medical problems on cadet activities. Some detailed information regarding foot care is contained in Annex A. Travel to Camp 15. Your travel to and from Course will be organised by 327FLT MOVO A Movements Schedule will be forwarded to you and your CO via . Sydney metro Cadets are required to make their own way to the designated Central Station pick up location, however timings, locations and details will be forwarded to these cadets also via 327FLT MOVO. 16. If you run into transport problems after leaving your hometown departure point you should first attempt to contact the 327FLT MOVO Failing that you should the course on Any special travel arrangements, such as being picked up at the end of Course, must be approved by the DETCDR and 327FLT. Please notify by ing ci.327flt@aafc.org.au and admino.327flt@aafc.org.au or phone.. Accommodation and Messing. 18. Accommodation will be at Bathurst Goldfields, and bedding will be provided. You will be housed in shared, dormitory-style accommodation, with shared shower and toilet facilities. Male Cadets, Female Cadets and Staff will be accommodated in separate areas. 19. All rations will also be provided by the AAFC. However, those cadets travelling from location will need to pack a cut lunch to eat whilst travelling. Personal Equipment 20. A detailed list of personal equipment that you will require is contained in Annex B. Gliding Log Book. 21. Cadets are to bring their gliding logbooks. Cadets will be issued with a gliding logbook at no charge on their first gliding course. FAI Certificate Book 22. Cadets who have achieved the A Certificate or a higher award should bring their gliding certificates (green booklet) with them. Dress
3 3 23. Dress whilst travelling to and from the Gliding Course will be Service Dress, short sleeve. 24. Dress of the day whilst on course will include DPCU, Flying Dress or PT as ordered. Make sure you have a complete set of uniform items and that your uniform is properly fitting. Name tags and the AAFC flash must be properly fitted to your DPCU s and those with flying suits are to ensure that they have all embellishments i.e. AAFC Crest or be prepared to purchase such items on course. 25. All uniforms are to be worn IAW AAFC Uniform Instructions. 26. A hat with a brim is required for sun protection. Baseball style caps are NOT ACCEPTABLE on the field because they give no sun protection to the ears and neck. Issued DPCU Boonie or Giggle style hats are recommended. 27. For flying, a pair of lace up sneakers or sand shoes is required. GP Boots are not suitable for use in a glider but need to be worn at all other times for OH&S reasons. Each cadet should bring a pair of thongs for the showers and if need be slippers for use during stand down periods within barracks. 28. You should also pack enough civilian clothing to last you the length of the course, and to cater for a variety of weather. All clothing should be appropriate and inoffensive in nature 29. Washing facilities are available at both the accommodation and at the airport. You will need to bring your own washing detergent (powered preferred). 30. You are to ensure that you have a regulation haircut on your arrival at the Gliding Course. Equity & Diversity and Inappropriate Behaviour 31. The DETCDR will conduct a briefing on these matters when you arrive at camp, however, all members are reminded of the instructions entitled Unacceptable Sexual Behaviour by members of the AAFC and Part 2, Chapter 7 of the Policy Manual, and are required to observe the standards set out therein. Members are also reminded that any investigation into allegations of sexual harassment, equity & diversity breaches or fraternisation will be thorough. Involvement in such matters may result in your removal from camp, potentially at the expense of your parent or guardian. Prohibited Items 32. The following items are prohibited on camp: a. weapons, including pocket, sheath or flick knives or similar items; b. fireworks, ammunition or pyrotechnics of any description; c. smoking material of any description including matches and lighters; d. alcohol or drugs in any form (Authorised prescription medication is to be logged with the DETCDR); e. electronic entertainment devices; and f. pornography, or any offensive material. Withdrawal From Activity 33. Should you wish to withdraw from the Gliding Course, it is vital that you inform your CO (or an appropriate member of your SQN staff) immediately and the DETCDR. Mobile Phones
4 4 34. Cadets wishing to bring mobile phones must accept that they will be secured in a locked cabinet by detachment staff during the day. If you are not prepared to have your telephone secured during the day do not bring it to course. Cadets will have access to their mobile telephones each evening during stand down (approx ). Please advise your parents that if they need to contact you please call Should cadets need to make a call a telephone is available for use. Photography 35. Photography or filming is generally available at the aerodrome, however conditions apply. Flying staff will brief Cadets upon arrival at the Field. Photography is not permitted within barracks / sleeping areas. Contact Information 36. During the activity, the detachment may be contacted on Spending Money 37. It is suggested that you bring some spending money to camp to spend on course patches etc. Some opportunities may also exist for you purchase items from vending machines. Security 38. It is your responsibility to ensure the security of personal and issued equipment whilst attending the Gliding Course. Leave 39. Leave from the Gliding Course will not normally be granted. However, any requests should be made to the DETCDR. Church Parades 40. All cadets have a right to attend Church, or any other religious service. Staff will ensure that appropriate opportunities are made available. It is your responsibility to advise the DETCDR of any services you wish to attend. 5 FOOT CARE INFORMATION ANNEX A TO 327FLT/2011/G01 04 APRIL 2011 Most cadets when attending AAFC activities have, for the greater part of the year, not worn footwear made of leather. The most common footwear appears to have been sneakers or similar trendy style. This style, although very comfortable to wear, has the disadvantage in that the transition to leather can result in the wearer becoming foot sore due to the softness of the feet. The difference in leather and the rubberised canvas is too great for the feet to cope with suddenly, especially during hot times of the year. To assist you the following remedies are suggested. Remedy 1 During the time left to you before arrival on camp take the opportunity to spend time on the beach and allow your feet to soak in the natural salt water. It will help the feet. Failing going to the beach, soak your feet in a strong salt solution regularly. Remedy 2 Between now and the camp commencing, on as many days as you can manage wear your GP boots and service shoes around the house and yard so that you can adjust to the leather boots/shoes. Remember that sneakers tend to 'give' more due to the construction and material used. The wearing of your boots/shoes is especially important if they are new ones. FEET-CARE A large amount of time will be spent on your feet, moving from one venue to another or on the parade ground, so your feet play a significant part in your life. LOOK AFTER THEM. Some of the most common problems encountered are: a. Ingrown Toe Nails; b. Foot Rot, better known as Tinea; and c. Blisters. Remedy 1 Soaking of the feet at the beach or in salt water will assist, if not cure the tinea, and the skin will harden enough to help prevent blisters. Remedy 2 Ensure that your shoes and boots fit well and that you have plenty of socks for the duration of the camp. They should be thick ones for wearing with GPs and, ideally, should be wool as these absorb the perspiration, whereas nylon/polyester tend to make the feet sweat. Remedy 3 Have your toe nails correctly cut and trimmed, and if necessary remove the protruding corner of the nail which grows under the skin and cripples you. It is this part of the nail which creates the severe pain and in some cases becomes infected. Be careful when removing this part of the nail. If you are not sure, seek the advice of your parents. If you are prone to In Grown Nails, it may be best to seek professional advice from a doctor or a podiatrist/chiropodist who will show you the correct way to trim your nails. Remedy 4 Keep your feet clean and dry, particularly between the toes, and use some powder to absorb the dampness that will occur in your GP boots after even one day's training. Remedy 5 Include a pair of light runners and a pair of thongs in your camp gear. You should always be wearing thongs in the showers to avoid the chance of catching tinea from someone else, and the lightweight shoes give your feet a chance to relax.
