PAGE 2 VIEW DATES, PRICES & BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY HERE Introduction Straddling the border between southern France and northern Italy, the Maritime Alps extend in an arc for 120 miles between 2 passes, the Colle di Cadibona and the Colle della Maddalena with peaks rising to above 3000m. At the heart of the range on the French side, the Parc National du Mercantour covers 7 valleys and 28 perched villages, including famous Belvedere at the entrance to the spectacular Gordolasque valley. One of the most interesting aspects of France s 10th national park is the valley below Mont Bego (2872m), the Vallee des Merveilles, the aptly named Valley of Marvels. In this valley are 40,000 mysterious ancient petroglyphs dating back to the Bronze Age illustrating weapons, cattle and human figures. The area is geologically complex and very wild, with an abundant 2000 species of flowering plants including rare varieties of saxifrage. Chamois and marmots are common, and sightings of ibex, mouflon, hare, wild boar, golden eagles and wolves are a real possibility. Our walking route through enchanting alpine scenery follows parts of the GR52 and includes the most noteworthy places in the Mercantour including the area known as the Suisse Nicoise, the Switzerland of Nice. As the name suggests, the Maritime Alps are close to the sea and this walking holiday begins and ends by the sparkling Mediterranean in Nice, the epicentre of Riviera glamour. Is this holiday for you? This is a superb weeks trekking in the quiet southern corner of the French Alps. Following parts of the GR52, the long-distance route that traverses the Maritime Alps, our trek includes variations to lakes, high passes and hidden valleys to explore places of interest. Footpaths will be way-marked and generally well-defined, although we will find ourselves traversing loose scree, boulder fields and more difficult terrain. Each day involves around 6 hours walking with up to 1000m of ascent and descent and should be well within the capabilities of most regular and fit hill walkers. Your luggage will be transported by taxi which means that you need carry no more than a light backpack for the majority of the week. There are just 2 nights in refuges inaccessible by road and this means that for 3 days you will need to carry a few extra overnight items. If you are looking to explore the hidden corners of the French Alps and soak up some south of France sunshine, this could be the walking holiday for you! 16th June 2018 is a special Digital Detox Departure date. On this departure you will be joined by like-minded travellers who want to unplug from the modern world and say goodbye to their internet connection for their entire holiday. When you arrive in country, your guide will collect everyone's mobile phones and look after it to the end of the trip. This is of course optional; but if you really want to unplug from reality and engage with your fellow travellers, give the mobile a rest, go "off-grid" and totally detox! Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Nice, the unofficial capital of the French Riviera. Transfer to the group hotel. KE land only package services begin with dinner at the group hotel. On arrival at the airport in Nice, you can take advantage of the regular local bus service to your hotel. Full instructions will be given with your meeting arrangements. Depending on your arrival time, you may be able to explore Nice, the capital of the Alpes Maritime region. Nice is beautifully situated on the Cote d'azur alongside the Bay of Angels. Popularised by wealthy British visitors in the 19th century attracted by the coast and the climate, the medieval old town, Vieux Nice, is a maze of
PAGE 3 streets and alleys with picturesque houses and fruit and flower markets. The town remains a must-see destination if you want to soak up the Riviera vibe. Your guide will meet the group at 6.30pm at the hotel for a briefing meeting before escorting the group to dinner at a nearby restaurant. HOTEL MEALS D Day 2: Transfer to Saint-Martin-Vesubie and then on to Le Boreon. Take a first hike in the Mercantour, in the Vallon de Salese. Today we make an early start as we board the public bus to Saint-Martin-Vesubie and then on to Le Boreon. The bus departs Nice at around 0730 and the journey will take around 1 hr and 45 minutes to Saint-Martin-Vesubie. After the first 30 minutes travel inland the landscape becomes more scenic, as the road passes through a deep river gorge and we travel past some of the "perched villages" that the area is famous for. After Saint-Martin- Vesubie it's a further 20 minutes through mountain countryside to Le Boreon, a small hamlet by a lake. Le Boreon is the starting point for many walks in the area and on arrival we will check into our homely gite. Picking up a packed lunch from the gite, shortly after arriving we will head up into the glorious mountains for our first walk which will be an exploration of the lovely Vallon De Salese. Leaving the gite, we enter the forest which is a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees initially and then mostly larch. Beyond the treeline we reach the pasturelands where we may bump into a shepherd and his flock, and there is the chance of seeing marmot and chamois. Retracing our steps we return to the gite for dinner, which will be home-cooked wholesome food served by the owners. GITE / HOSTEL DESCENT 1000M ASCENT 1000M TIME 5-6 HRS WALKING HOURS DISTANCE 6KM MEALS BLD Day 3: A day trekking through the verdant forests and rocky valleys of the 'Suisse Nicoise'. Today we will walk through the area known as the "Suisse Nicoise" on account of its high alpine pasturelands reminiscent of Switzerland. This is a spectular day's walking on ancient mule tracks crossing the high Pas des Ladres (2448m), the "Pass of the Thieves" a former smugglers pass so named for the traders who came this way to avoid the taxes levied on their goods at the major passes. On the way up to the pass we ascend a valley of trickling streams and dramatic waterfalls, strewn with flowering alpine flora before arriving at the lovely Lac de Trecolpas (2150m) with its mini-island of conifers. Chamois and marmots are easily spotted in the alpine terrain. As we approach the summit of the pass, the path becomes a little trickier traversing through loose rubble and earth. The views from the pass are fabulous and include Monte Gelas, Maledie and Mont Ponset. Our descent route takes us steeply down to the mountain refuge of La Madone de Fenestre, a historic refuge where walkers are welcomed and fed. MOUNTAIN HUT / REFUGE ASCENT 1000M DISTANCE 12KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 545M TIME 6 HRS WALKING HOURS Day 4: A traverse of a high plateau above the Gordolasque with impressive views of the peak of Le Gelas. Today we cross the upper reaches of the valley of La Gordolasque from La Madone to the Relais de Merveilles taking an alternative route across a high plateau. Few other walkers take this path which offers panoramic views to
PAGE 4 many 3000m plus summits. Initially keeping the high peak of Le Gelas to our left we ascend through stands of larch and alpenrose to reach the Baisse des Cinq Lacs (2235m) where the five beautifully situated lakes that make up the Lacs de Prals reflect the surrounding jagged peaks. Our descent route through pasture and forests of conifer and juniper takes us down to the comfortable, and newly-renovated Relais des Merveilles (1600m) where we will spend the night. GITE / HOSTEL DESCENT 900M ASCENT 530M TIME 5-6 HRS WALKING HOURS DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BLD Day 5: Enter the Vallee de Merveilles via a high pass, we then explore the valley and its famous rock engravings. Departing the refuge, the path takes us up the Vallon d'empuonrame to a high pass, the Pas de l'arpette (2511m). After reaching the pass, from where the mountain sides slope down to the Vallee des Merveilles, we get great views of the glacial lakes, the Lac de l'huile, Lac Long and Lac Carbone. After a short descent we enter in the famous Vallee des Merveilles. a protected reserve on account of the ancient rock engravings. The valley is the site of the largest quantity of open-air Bronze Age petroglyphs in Europe, some dating back 5000 years and is believed to have been of great religious significance for the tribal people who created them. The engravings have been painstakingly etched into the orange veneer of the schist on cliff faces and boulders and display geometric shapes, daggers, axes, scythes and some anthropomorphic figures. Our guide will show us the most famous petroglyphs including the "sorcerer" and the many depictions of horned animals. The site was first identified by a British amateur archaeologist, Clarence Bicknell, in Bicknell was an English vicar who had made his home on the Italian Riviera and he spent several years (from 1897 to 1902) copying and cataloguing many of the images. After spending some time exploring this fascinating site under the rocky slopes of mighty Mont Bego (2872m) we will hike down the valley to the Refuge des Merveilles (2100m). MOUNTAIN HUT / REFUGE ASCENT 1000M DISTANCE 8KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 380M TIME 5-6 HRS WALKING HOURS Day 6: A superb days walk following the GR52 through the Valley des Merveilles to the Refuge de Cessole. Today we follow the long-distance GR52 route through the Vallee des Merveilles which offers another chance to look at more of the intriguing petroglyphs. This is a superb days walking, although it is probably the toughest day of the week. Leaving the Refuge des Merveilles, the path passes through a landscape of rock and alpine flowers where we may see chamois and marmots. After passing the lakes, the path rises steeply via zigzags to the Baisse de Valmasque (2549m), a high pass affording great views of the Lac du Basto and nearby jagged peaks. Navigating scree and boulders, we traverse a high valley making a final short easy scramble up steep and loose terrain to gain the Baisse du Basto (2693m). From this point it is a long descent to the Lac de la Fous where ibex often graze on the shores of the lake. Our welcome at the Refuge de Cessole (formerly the Refuge de Nice) will be warm as we enjoy the comforts of this recently renovated mountain hut which sits on a rocky outcrop by the lakes at 2232m.
PAGE 5 MOUNTAIN HUT / REFUGE ASCENT 830M DISTANCE 9KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 600M TIME 6 HRS WALKING HOURS Day 7: Our last day of walking continues on the GR52 above the beautiful Gordolasque Valley to Madone de la Fenestre. Return transfer to Nice. Another spectacular day of walking today as we continue to follow the GR52. We begin by descending along the banks of Lac de la Fous to an abandoned shepherd's hut before we embark upon a relentless climb towards the Pas Mont Colomb. The terrain is quite rough, with the path passing through scree and small boulders before a final steep climb to a rocky notch in the ridge that forms the pass. A zigzag path plunges down into the valley below, where there are often chamois to be seen, as we make a final descent through the rocky landscape where views of some of the big peaks of the area including Gelas (3143m), Maledie (3059m) and le Clapier (3045m) dominate the landscape. Finally entering a more verdant world the last leg of our fantastic walk ends at the Refuge of La Madone de la Fenestre. After a short stop here for refreshments and to take some final photographs, our vehicle will meet us for the return transfer back to Nice (1 hr 45mins). Our accommodation will be a hotel in the centre of Nice and tonight we'll enjoy a final dinner with our guide to celebrate the end of an amazing week. HOTEL DESCENT 890M ASCENT 550M TIME 5 HRS WALKING HOURS DISTANCE 5KM MEALS BLD Day 8: Time to enjoy Nice before transferring to the airport. KE group package services end after breakfast. Depending on the timing of your return flight, you can enjoy some free time to explore the city. From the hotel, it is easy to take a public bus, or a taxi to the airport. MEALS B Holiday Information What's Included An experienced English-speaking local guide All accommodation as described All meals as detailed in the meal plan All road transport required by the itinerary Baggage transfers between overnight stops other than for 2 nights What's Not Included Travel Insurance Airport transfers Miscellaneous expenses - drinks and souvenirs etc
PAGE 6 Meal Plan All meals are included from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 8. Breakfasts are continental and there will be a hot meal each evening. Packed lunches will be provided. If you wish to take additional trail bars and snacks (not chocolate as it can melt) we recommend you bring these with you (or purchase them in local supermarkets) to keep in your trek bag as these can be expensive from hotels and refuges en route. Food At hotels continental breakfasts are provided - cereals, fruit juice, tea and coffee, bread and a variety of spreads including jam, honey and Nutella, for example. Whilst staying at the gites and mountain refuges breakfast will be more simple; bread, butter, jam and sometimes cereal. Each day at breakfast, the tour leader will lay out the items that will make up the group's packed lunches - bread, cheese, sliced ham, tinned tuna, sausage, salad and fruit. Please note that everyone should bring a plastic lunch box with them, together with a spoon and penknife, for lunch salads. At each of the gites and at the mountain refuge, a full 3-course dinner will be served, usually a soup dish, followed by some wholesome local speciality and a desert. Joining Arrangements & Transfers Due to the close proximity of the airport, wide range of flights arriving and ease of using public transport, airport transfers are not included in the holiday price. Nice has an excellent public bus service with direct links to the city from the airport. We recommend you take the line 98 (Ligne 98) public bus which departs from the airport to Promenade Des Arts (the Museum of Modern Art), the last stop on the line, which is very close to the group hotel. The journey takes around 30 minutes depending on traffic and costs 6 each way. Buses depart every 20 minutes and tickets need to be purchased before boarding. It is also possible to take a taxi from the airport to the hotel and the cost of this will be between 30 and 40. On arrival check-in is possible from 4pm. If you arrive earlier than this, the hotel will allow you to deposit your luggage while you explore the city. The KE leader will meet the group at the hotel 6.30pm on day 1 for a pre-trip briefing and to escort the group to dinner. During the week the leader will assist you in confirming bus departure times or in reserving taxis for your departure transfer to the airport. Check-out time on departure is 11am. Further details will be given with your booking confirmation. It is also possible to travel direct to Nice on the train from London. Take the Eurostar train from London Saint Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. Then, take the TGV train from Paris Gare de Lyon to Nice (there are several departures daily, travel time is around 5.5 hrs). For information about train travel between the UK and Nice, check out Accommodation Accommodation at the start and end of this holiday will be in a comfortable 3 star hotel in Nice. Here the rooms will be twin-sharing with en-suite facilities. During the trek in the Mercantour National Park, we will spend 5 nights in rustic gites and mountain refuges. Accommodation for these nights is generally in non-segregated dormitory style rooms with bunk beds and shared facilities. This type of shared accommodation is all part of the Alpine mountain experience. Single rooms are generally not available although can be arranged for the Nice hotel. Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be led by an experienced mountain leader. There will also be a support vehicle for baggage transfer. Altitude
PAGE 7 This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres. Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at high altitude. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude. Spending Money We estimate that 150 to 200 euros will cover all personal expenses including drinks, tips, souvenir purchases, shower tokens for the refuges and miscellaneous expenses.
