PAGE 2 Introduction Explore the stunning sleeping beauties of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park on this one week walking holiday in a secluded and little-known region of France. We have specially designed this trip to showcase the best this rich region has to offer, staying in three contrasting locations of vibrant Clermont-Ferand, quaint medieval Besse, and wild Cezallier Plateau; to truly submerge ourselves in the geology and culture of the region. Our walks of 4 to 5 hours each day will take us to the beautiful volcanic lake of Pavin, the remote valley of La Fontain Salee, and the mountain meadows of the Cezallier Plateau steeped in farming heritage accompanied by breath-taking panoramas. This trip is the perfect balance between walking and discovery and with our local guide on hand to lead the way we are sure to find even more hidden delights along the way. Is this holiday for you? This holiday is perfect for you if you want to discover a peaceful and little-known area of France, walk amongst history and wander at a gentle pace. Our walks are specially designed to ensure you ll experience the culture, geology and history of this fantastic hidden gem. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Arrive in vibrant Clermont-Ferrand and meet your fellow walkers. Arrive in Clermont-Ferrand, the gateway to the Massif Central, and settle into your hotel for the evening. Depending on your arrival you will have time to explore this vibrant town independently; visit its striking jet-black 13th century cathedral, the only one of its kind in France; wander through the pristine gardens of Jardin Lecoq; or enjoy some of the areas amazing cheese in a café on the square. If, like us at KE, you have a sweet tooth we recommend a visit to '1513' a creperie named after the year it was built. In the evening we will meet our guide for the week, who will tell us about our exciting week ahead. Our guide will also answer any questions we may have as we get to know our fellow walkers over dinner. HOTEL MEALS D Day 2: Transfer to Besse and explore Lac Pavin and Puy de montchal (1407m). After enjoying our first delicious French breakfast we will take a short transfer to the beautiful medieval village of Besse, our home for the next three nights. This fantastic little village is sits at the foot of Sancy, the highest summit in the region (1886m), and in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park. With three nights here we will have plenty of time to explore the narrow paved streets, visit the pretty boutiques and stroll through the Renaissance quarter. But for now we have a different objective- the sleeping volcanoes. Leaving our hotel we will set off on foot through the pretty streets to the famous Lac Pavin. This peaceful lake is a crater lake with a surface area of some 44 hectares and depths of 92m. The water here is teaming with trout making it a popular fishing spot with locals. Our walk will take in this beautiful lake and the overlooking Puy de Montchal (1407m), the youngest volcano in France at a sprightly 7000 years. We will return to Besse with time to enjoy a coffee before regrouping for dinner in our hotel with a glass of wine to toast a great day. GUESTHOUSE MEALS BLD TIME 4 HRS

PAGE 3 Day 3: Discover Chateau de Murol and panoramas of Chambon Lake. Today we will transfer to the village of Murol located just 20 minutes north of Besse. This pretty village is dominated by the mighty Chateau de Murol which sits proudly upon one of the volcanic domes for which the region is famed. We may have time to enjoy a morning coffee before beginning our walk, heading east from the town, to belvederes on Chambon Lake offering magnificent panoramas across the lake. Today is a day for packing your swimming costume as the lake is popular for a refreshing swim with places around the lake shores offering pedalo and kayak hire. Should time allow we will be able to take a quick dip too. Our walk continues to bring us back to Murol where we will have time to explore before returning to Besse for dinner. GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 450M MEALS BLD DESCENT 450M TIME 4-5 HRS Day 4: Explore the fascinating glacial valley of la Fontaine Salee. Our walk today will explore the beautiful glacial valley of La Fontain Salee. We start our day with a short transfer to the small hamlet of La Morangie burrowed beneath the south face of the Massif du Sancy and it is here where our hike begins. The valley of La Fontain Salee, or 'the salt fountain', offers fantastic gentle walking thanks to its glacial heritage which has carved a broad flat bottomed footprint beneath the massif, dotted with irregular boulders abandoned by the glacier. The valley itself is awash with pastures and the slow flow of water creates tranquil streams and rich peat bogs. This valleys unique name is owed not to a salt spurting fountain but in fact the mineral rich land which have been dissolved into the water. We will see the term 'Fonts' used in many places in this region. Our walk will take in the fascinating geographical splendour surrounded by the sharp volcanic peaks of the natural reserve for simple breath-taking panoramas. We end our day of exploration with a relaxed evening meal in our hotel and perhaps a stroll through the town. HOTEL ASCENT 350M MEALS BLD DESCENT 350M TIME 4-5 HRS Day 5: Discover quaint La Goivelle and it's tranquil volcanic lakes. Stay on the wild Cezallier Plateau. Today we will hike towards the Cezallier Plateau, are home for the following two nights. Fuelled on breakfast we say farewell to Besse and head south through green rolling hills to the pretty village of La Godivelle, set between two volcanic lakes. The village is extremely quaint, offering us a good morning coffee stop, with its pretty fountain and 13th century church, Saint-Blaise at the centre of the village. Our route continues, taking in the tranquil lakes and vast grassy lands; a unique atmosphere. Our hike ends with a transfer to our accommodation for the following two evenings set upon the wild Cezallier Plateau. Here we can unwind after our days walk and enjoy a relaxed evening meal with our leader. GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 350M MEALS BLD DESCENT 350M TIME 4-5 HRS Day 6: Walk on the beautiful Cezallier Plateau.

PAGE 4 Today we will explore the fantastic plateau upon where we have stayed. Dubbed 'the little Scotland Auvergne' for its mountain meadows and rounded summits, Cezallier Plateau is a beautifully wild place for us to roam. Our walk will take us through the colourful mountain pastures, weaving between the burons which are scattered across the land. These small stone houses represent the longstanding farming heritage of the area, a place where for cheese farmers to call home during the summer transhumance of the cattle and make cheese from their delicious milk. Today, the transhumance process of moving cattle to high summer pastures remains, but the farmers prefer to rest their head in the warmth of their own bed! Having spent the day falling in love with this wild and romantic plateau we will return to our accommodation for our penultimate dinner together. GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 450M MEALS BLD DESCENT 450M TIME 4-5 HS Day 7: Walk up to Puy de Dome for stunning views of the surrounding area. Transfer back to Clermont- Ferrand. We leave Cezallier behind and start our morning with a transfer to Orcines, on the western outskirts of Clermont- Ferrand. We may be able to enjoy a morning coffee stop in this charming little town before we set off on our walk. Our route will follow old mule track as we ascend our goal, Puy de Dome (1465m) with its symbolic volcanic summit. As we reach the summit it is easy to see why this is the Pearl of the Chaine des Puys with spectacular views over Clermont-Ferrand and across to the areas we have explored this week. We will have time to discover the Roman Mercure Temple of Puy de Dome and the volcano exhibition before making our descent, facing the Puy Pariou with its deep crater. We return to Clermont- Ferrand for our final evening to enjoy dinner with new friends and toast to a great week of exploring. HOTEL ASCENT 500M MEALS BL DESCENT 500M TIME 4-5 HS Day 8: Departure day We can enjoy a relaxed breakfast and if travel arrangements allow, a final stroll through this vibrant town before our onward journey. A website that can be very useful for planning your journey is Another option to consider, instead of flying, is the Eurostar from the UK to Paris and then an onward train. Special Diets Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot provide special diets. Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances. Accommodation On this holiday we will spend 2 nights in a standard class hotel in Clermont-Ferrand. In Besse we have 3 nights in a lovely 3 star hotel which is located about 800m from the medieval city itself and is in the very heart of the Regional Park of Auvergne Volcanoes - there is also access to a jacuzzi in the evenings. For the last 2 nights, our accommodation is in a charming and cosy Bed and Breakfast located in the wild Cézallier plateau; to relax after our walks, we will have access to a small outdoor spa. Accommodation is in twin sharing rooms. Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be led by an experienced and qualified leader.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit.

PAGE 7 Visa Europe UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa. The European Commission announced in November 2018 that, even in a no-deal scenario, UK travellers can still visit the EU without a visa, providing the same is offered to European citizens visiting the UK. From 2021, UK citizens will need to pay a fee (of around 7 Euros) as part of a new electronic travel authorisation system applying to all third country visitors to the EU. After 12 April 2019, if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, UK passport holders should ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity beyond your date of arrival. This applies to adult and child passports. If you renewed your UK passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your new passport s expiry date. Any extra months beyond 10 years from the date of issue may not count towards the 6 months that should be remaining. You can check whether or not your current passport will be valid for your chosen holiday using this official government link: Health & Vaccinations Severe Allergies If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen. Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations. EHIC / Medical Cover UK residents should obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment, but is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is still vital when travelling overseas. Currency The unit of currency in Europe is the Euro. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Climate The Auvergne region has a continental climate. It shifts between warm summers and wetter winters. In the mountainous areas the of Auvergne, the climate is a little wetter and colder. However, an area like Clermont- Ferrand is one of the driest and sunniest cities in France. May, June, July, August and September are the best times to visit the Auvergne, during this time avergae temperatures will be around 25 degrees celsius. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single,

PAGE 8 authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Single Use Plastic KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use. We have pledged to AITO s Project Protect that 70% of our agents stop using single use plastic bottles. Flight Information Flight Inclusive Or Land Only? On our website we display a UK Flight inclusive package price and Land only package price for the majority of our holidays. Land Only Notes We sell this holiday on a Land Only basis and recommend that you book your flights to Lyon Airport which is approximately a 2.5 hour train journey from Clermont-Ferrand. Please refer to the 'Joining arrangements and transfers' for further details. Flights SHOULD NOT be booked until you have received your booking confirmation and the departure is showing 'Guaranteed to Run' or 'Limited'. If flying from the UK there are a number of low cost airlines offering flights to Lyon. These include Easyjet who have flights from London, & Edinburgh. If you would prefer to book a 'flight inclusive package' using scheduled airlines from the UK please contact our flights department for a quote. Whilst flight prices are likely to be more expensive you will benefit from full financial protection. Why Choose KE Adventure Travel? Why Choose KE Adventure Travel? Operating since 1984, KE Adventure Travel has some of the most experienced staff in the business, with the proven ability to set up and operate a worldwide programme of adventures. Everyone has adventure travel at heart and joins at least one trip a year. It is this depth of experience that makes KE stand out from other adventure travel operators. When you contact KE, by phone or , or visit our office, you will find the help and advice you need, from someone who has actually done the trip and can give you the benefit of their first-hand experience.

PAGE 9 KE can guarantee the very best in trip support, excellent food, a good standard of hotel and other accommodation, plus the back up of one of the most respected companies in the business. Client satisfaction is at the top of our agenda and almost 50% of our bookings each year come from repeat business. If you are looking for adventure then look no further than KE. Group Tour Leaders All of our holidays are accompanied by an experienced leader, some of whom have worked with KE groups for many years. Many are professional guides and instructors with an unrivalled knowledge of the areas in which they work. In many parts of the world, we recruit local guides with appropriate training and experience. In addition to having the technical skills to ensure your safety, KE expects its leaders to be active members of the group. A leader should be fun to travel with and ready to share with you their enthusiasm for adventure travel and their knowledge of the area. Alongside the group leader, there will be a local support crew, which could be just a driver, or a complete team of guides, drivers, porters, mule-herders and cooks. The hard work of our support crews, along with the fascinating insight they can offer into their local culture, is integral to providing you with the very best adventure travel experience. Sustainable Tourism Since we ran our first trip in 1984, we have been committed keeping the world's most beautiful places pristine by minimising our environmental impact. Recognising the fragility of the world's wilderness environments, we keep our groups small and operate according to a Mountain Code, which is provided to all groups, trek leaders, agents and staff. We make sure that our local staff are well treated and well paid, we respect indigenous cultures, take care to protect the environment of the places we visit and take every opportunity to make a positive contribution wherever we travel. Our philosophy of 'leaving nothing but footprints' has been integral to KE's approach right from the start over 30 years ago. In recognition of our efforts we are proud to have achieved the highest award of 5 Stars for Sustainable Tourism by AITO. We continue to travel responsibly, and more information on our policy, practice, and specific projects can be found at and on the website of our partner charity the Juniper Trust: KE's Mountain Code is issued to our staff, trek leaders and overseas agents, and we recommend it to our clients, too! Booking Your Holiday The easiest way to make your booking is online. You will need to pay a deposit at the time of booking. This is normally 200 but for some holidays with special permit fees or internal flights, this may be more. The amount of deposit required for an individual holiday is given on the dates and prices page of the holiday. Late bookings will require full payment. We cannot confirm any booking until we receive your fully completed booking form. Adventure Travel Insurance It is a condition of joining any of our trips that you are insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue services). We also strongly recommend that you take out holiday cancellation insurance, as all deposits paid are non-refundable. Please ensure that your insurer is aware of your KE Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities being undertaken. You will then need to advise us of your policy details and complete an Insurance Declaration Form. CAMPBELL IRVINE DIRECT travel insurance is available to EU residents and will cover the majority of KE Adventure holidays. It has been designed to provide cover for activities normally excluded by other insurers such as trekking, mountain biking and climbing. Please note that certain activities may attract a higher premium. In addition

PAGE 10 Campbell Irvine Direct cannot provide cover for KE climbing trips above 6000m. Cover for these can be obtained through either the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) or Snowcard. TRAVELEX is a USA based insurer offering travel insurance, which can be used by US citizens and US residents only. KE recommends the "Travelex Select" package for our holidays. If your holiday involves using mountaineering equipment (ropes, harness or crampons), for climbing or glacial travel, you should consider the "Adventure Plus Pak" optional upgrade on the Travelex Select Plan. Please refer to the 'Description of Coverage' for a summary of the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the applicable Protection Plan. This policy will also cover KE climbing trips above 6000m. We hope that this trip notes has answered most of your questions. Please feel free to contact us and speak to one of our experts.
