PAGE 2 VIEW DATES, PRICES & BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY HERE Introduction This one week trekking holiday takes us on a classic mountain journey through the wild Sunnmore Alps of Fjord Norway, including ascents of the peaks Slogen (1564m) and Saksa (1073m), and around one of Norway s most beautiful and secluded fjords, Hjordundfjord. We begin in the Art Nouveau port of Alesund. From here a short ferry ride south takes us to the western tip of Hjorundfjord. This stunning fjord, one of the longest in Norway, cuts dramatically between two large mountainous peninsulas which home the rugged peaks of the Sunnmore Alps. The first 3 days of our hike take us up through the verdant Molladalen, Kvanndalen and Sylvkallen valleys on the west of the fjord, we ll pass by mountain lakes and through dramatic cirques, surrounded by towering rocky pinnacles. We ll also have the option to ascend Syvkallen Peak (1310m). Descending to the fjord-side town of Saebo, we next take the ferry across to the eastern-side of the Hjordenfjord. Our first objective here is Saksa (1073m), from its north summit we will have fantastic views of our final challenge, Slogen (1546m), easily recognisable with its distinctive pyramid shape rising abruptly from the mirror-like waters of the fjord like a giant stone leviathan. Slogen is arguably the finest summit in the Sunnmore Alps and the views from the top are impressive. Staying overnight in the Norwegian Mountain Association hut, Patchellhytta, will give us two opportunities to reach the summit. Our walk out takes us down the foot of the Habostaddalen Valley from where we transfer back to Alesund for one last night. Though rarely explored by visitors to Norway, the Sunnmore Alps have long been a favourite with Norwegian hikers and rock climbers. Now you can find out why on what might be the finest mountain adventure walking holiday in Fjord Norway! Explore International. This holiday is part of our Explore International range. Participants on these trips can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience! Is this holiday for you? This is a real mountain journey in Norway with significant amounts of ascent and descent on most days, so this trekking holiday is suitable for experienced hill walkers who are looking for an excellent week of mountain walking on quiet trails. The underfoot conditions are predominantly good but there are sections of bare rock, boulder fields, airy ridges and some scrambling. We will be walking for between 5 and 8 hours each day and you will be required to carry your personal equipment throughout the holiday. Sleeping bags and camping mats are not needed, so with careful planning it should be possible to keep the weight of your rucksack down to below 10kgs. Throughout the holiday we will enjoy staying in a mix of comfortable mountain huts surrounded by towering peaks, traditional cabins beside tranquil fjords and characterful hotels in charming villages, such as Saebo and Oye, where we can experience traditional Norwegian fjord life. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in the picturesque fishing port of Alesund.

PAGE 3 On arriving into the airport in Alesund, the easiest way to reach the group hotel is to take advantage of the regular airport bus service to the Central Bus Station (Alesund Rutebilstasjon), which is just a short walking distance from the group hotel. Depending on your flight time your may have time to head out and explore the town ahead of meeting with the group in the evening. Smaller than Bergen, and certainly lesser visited, Alesund is every bit as picturesque. The town floats out on a fishhook shaped peninsular, surrounded by the sea, and it will come as no surprise to find that the main source of income here is fishing; the port is actually home to the largest cod fishing fleet in Norway. Having been almost entirely rebuilt in 1904, following a devastating fire which destroyed most of the town, its architectural style is now an attractive fusion between the Art Nouveau style of the early 1900s and traditional Norwegian design, including conical roofed turrets and gargoyles - it would certainly be a fitting setting for a Nordic fairytale! In the evening we rendezvous with our guide in the hotel lobby, where they will brief us on the days to come and take the opportunity to check over our kit. We'll then head out to one of the centre's many nice restaurants to enjoy a delicious welcome meal. KE Land Only package services begin with the evening meal. HOTEL MEALS D Day 2: Transfer to the western tip of Hjorundfjord. Walk through the Molladalen Valley to Ytre Standal. After taking breakfast at the hotel, we will need to have our rucksacks packed and be ready to leave at around 9am. Any excess baggage can be left at the hotel. A quick bus journey takes us to the ferry terminal where we make the short crossing to Festoya on the western tip of Hjorundfjord. Another short transfer brings us to the beginning of our trek at Melbosaetra. Today's route follows an established path up through the scenic and secluded Molladalen Valley, which is surrounded by steep, scarred alpine ridges and pinnacles - a mecca for rock climbers. Our path traverses through a dramatic cirque, past mountain lakes and over a small pass just below the peak Gronetinden (1014m), the highest point on today's walk. We then begin our long descent down through the green Standaldalen Valley to our cabin accommodation at Ytre Standal, nestled right on the edge of Hjorundfjord, where we settle in for the night. Drive Time: 1hr. CABIN DESCENT 800M ASCENT 400M TIME 6-7 HRS TREKKING HOURS DISTANCE 9KM MEALS BLD Day 3: Trek through the Kvanndalen Valley to Standaleidet. We take breakfast at the cabin and prepare our packed lunches before heading out for the mountains again. Today's hike is a little shorter than yesterday, but over more challenging terrain. We begin by retracing our steps up Standaldalen Valley before bearing left and journeying up past the small mountain lake at Litlekoppvatnet and up through the rocky Kvanndalen Valley. There will be a short scramble on some loose scree and we may encounter some hard packed snow towards the top of the Pass. We should have a good view of the Kolastinden Glacier and the surrounding mountains. A short, but steep, descent takes us down to Standaleidet, a popular place for the locals to start their hiking tours and ski touring trips, and we will overnight here in cosy mountain cabins. CABIN DESCENT 600M ASCENT 1000M TIME 6 HRS TREKKING HOURS DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BLD Day 4: Over the Hogreset pass (776m), optional ascent of Syvkallen (1310m), and descend through the Sylvkallen Valley to Saebo.

PAGE 4 We can look forward to some truly impressive fjord views today! We begin by hiking up through the Novedalen Valley. After a short walk down the road we turn right up a feint path that steeply climbs to a high meadow where the going gets easier. If we are feeling strong, and the weather allows, we can also make a detour to hike up to the summit of Sylvkallen (1310m). This is a classic mountain walk in the area and will reward us with one of the summits with the best view down to the Hjorundfjord! Back en route we cross the pass at Hogreset (776m), before making our way down the Litledalen Valley to Saebo. From Saebo we have terrific views of the Hjorundfjorden and Norangsfjorden. Tomorrow morning we will take the ferry across the fjord, but tonight we overnight in a lovely, fjord side, hotel where we can enjoy a delicious three course meal in the hotel's fantastic waterfront restaurant. HOTEL DESCENT 1000M ASCENT 800M TIME 7 HRS TREKKING HOURS DISTANCE 14KM MEALS BLD Day 5: Take the ferry across the fjord to Leknes and Saksa ascent (1073m). Transfer to Oye. After an enjoyable breakfast at the hotel we take the ferry across to Leknes. As we cross the fjord, we can get a good look at today's mountain objective, Saksa (1073m), which is located right where Hjorundfjord meets the smaller Norangsfjorden. During today's walk we will enjoy stunning views of both these fjords. Saksa has several summits, and a straightforward, but steep, path leads us up to the first south summit. We then descend to scramble across a rocky and airy col, by which we access the northern, and highest, summit. From up here we should get a great view of Slogen, which we will climb in the coming days! We return to Leknes via the same route and take a short taxi ride to the hotel in the small fjord village of Øye. Built in 1891, tonight's characterful accommodation has long been a favourite venue for royals, writers and honeymooners. Previous guests inlcude Sherlock creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the composer Edvard Grieg, playwright Henrik Ibsen and the explorer Roald Amundsen - to mention but a few! We'll feel transported back in time as we spend the evening relaxing in the traditional bar, surrounded by memorabilia from a bygone era, and enjoy another fine 3 course meal in the hotel's restaurant. HOTEL DESCENT 1000M ASCENT 1000M TIME 6 HRS TREKKING HOURS DISTANCE 6KM MEALS BLD Day 6: Trek up to Patchellhytta (800m). First chance to ascend Slogen (1564m). We enjoy a relaxing morning and a delicious breakfast at hotel. A short 10min transfer takes us to the foot of Slogen, where we follow a steep, but straightforward path up as far as the Norwegian Trekking Associations cabin, Patchellhytta (800m), where we take lunch. If the weather is favourable and we are not too tired, we can this afternoon choose to continue on and climb the additional 400m up to the top of Slogen (1564m). The pyramidshaped summit of Slogen is a magnificent sight and despite its sharp appearance the initial ascent is easier than you might expect. The last section is a little exposed and will require some scrambling, however on reaching the top we are rewarded with some simply breathtaking views over the fjords and the vast swathes of the Sunnmore Alps. We should also be able to see all the way across the Norangsfjorden to Jakta (1588m), one of the most distinctive looking peaks in the region. After some time to enjoy the views and take those all-important summit photos, we head back down to the mountain hut where we stay for the night. The return trek to the summit from Patchellhytta will take us around 3 hours.

PAGE 5 MOUNTAIN HUT / REFUGE ASCENT 1200M DISTANCE 8KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 400M TIME 6-7 HRS TREKKING HOURS Day 7: A second chance to ascend Slogen. Hike down Habostaddalen Valley towards Stranda. Transfer to Alesund. If this was not possible yesterday afternoon, this morning offers a second chance to walk to the summit of Slogen. From Patchellhytta we make the short descent out via the Habostaddalen Valley towards the town of Stranda, at the head of Geirangerfjord, where our vehicles will be waiting to meet us. Our transfer takes us north, throught spectacular scenery, to Orsnes. From here we take the ferry to Magerholm and drive the short remaining distance back to Alesund. Arriving into Alesund we should have plenty of time to freshen up and enjoy some independent sightseeing in this beautiful town or just relax in one of the port side cafes with a coffee and a pastry! In the evening, to top of our great week of walking, we will join with our guide and head out for a final celebratory group meal in one of town's many restaurants. Transfer Time: 2.5hrs. The emphasis will be on fresh produce and easily-prepared meals, such as stews or pasta with salads. Breakfasts at the cabins/hut will consist of muesli, bread, jam, cheese, ham, plus tea and coffee and each morning we will also make up our own packed lunches from the food provided by our guides, you may also want to bring some of your own favourite hill snacks with you. On our evenings in Oye, Saebo and Alesund we will enjoy delicious two or three course restaurant meals. Local specialities will predominate, so expect lots of fresh and cured fish and meat, mostly salmon, cod, lamb, reindeer and meatballs. Hotel breakfasts will be buffet in style and there will be lots to choose from. Those looking to sample traditional Norwegian breakfast foods should look out for the delicious cloudberry jam and brunost, an unusual brown whey cheese with a sweet caramalised flavour. Joining Arrangements & Transfers There are several airlines operating flights into Alesund (KLM, SAS and Norwegian Air) and flights are available from a variey of UK regional airports. The group will meet at the hotel in Alesund on the evening of Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary. Due to the availability of an efficient airport bus service, we have not included airport transfers. There is no need to book the bus in advance, the airport in Alesund is small and the bus will be waiting just outside the terminal. A one way ticket for 20 min journey will cost around 100NOK (approx. 10). Buses are timed to meet all arriving and departing flights. You should ride the bus to the Central Bus Station (Ålesund Rutebilstasjonen), which is just a short walk from the group hotel. Taking the airport bus from the Central Bus Station is also the easiest way to return to the airport on departure day. The hotel and guide will be able to offer advice on best bus to catch to meet your flight. Contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation. Accommodation The group will spend 2 nights in a comfortable hotel, in an excellent location, in Alesund. At Ytre Standal and at Standaleidet, we will stay in private cabins where we will sleep in simple twin bedded or bunked rooms with shared bathrooms. The cabins have cosy dining/kitchen areas where we will prepare our meals and spend our evenings. At Saebo we will spend one night at a fantastic, fjord side, hotel with an excellent restaurant and at Oye we stay in a comfortable and historic hotel, simply brimming with character. We will also spend one night at the Norwegian Trekking Associations mountain hut, Patchellhytta. The hut has a large utility room, lounge and kitchen. Accommodation whilst in hotels will be twin sharing, if you are travelling by yourself you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. In the cabins at Ytre Standal and Standaleidet, it may be necessary to share triple or quad rooms with other group members of the same sex. At Patchellhytta mountain hut, at busy times, we may be asked to share larger mix sex dorms of up to 10 people. Depending on availability, it may be possible to book single accommodation for the four hotel nights. It is not possible to provide single accommodation in the cabins or at Patchellhytta. For additional hotel prices and single supplement costs please refer to the dates and prices page of the trip on our website. Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be led by a professionally qualified Norwegian Mountain Guide. Spending Money All meals are included in the holiday price, so (or equivalent in US dollars, Euros etc) should be sufficient to cover your miscellaneous expenses, including airport bus, bar bills and snack items, chocolate bars etc. This will

PAGE 7 also allow you to pay reasonable tips to the local guide. Credit and debit cards can be used to withdraw Norwegain Kroner from ATM s on arrival at the airport and in the town itself. There will not be any opportunity to change money once we leave Alesund. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, you should budget accordingly (credit cards can be useful in this respect). Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. You can make your selection in your My KE account after booking. * A trek bag is not required for this holiday. You can however purchase a KE trek bag for Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance Since you will be carrying all your personal equipment during the trek, you should make every effort to keep the weight of your gear to a minimum. As we will be returning to the same hotel in Alesund before and after the trek we can leave any excess baggage at the hotel. With careful planning (and considering that you will not have to carry a sleeping bag or a camping mattress) it should be possible to keep the weight of your equipment down to between 8 and 10 kgs and we recommend that you have a trial walk with your pack. Note that on the day we choose to ascend Slogen it will be possible to leave any excess luggage at Patchellhytta for the last section of the walk. You might want to bring a suitable lightweight bag to put your things in on this day so that you can carry a relatively empty pack. Please note that on the day that we walk up to Patchellhytta you may be asked to carry a small share of the groups overnight food supplies up as far as the hut only. For this holiday, where you will be carrying all of your kit, the KE Trek Bag (see below) will not provide the best solution when packing for your trip. Group Size & Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit. Visa Europe UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa.

PAGE 8 Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations. UK residents should obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment, but is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is still vital when travelling overseas. Currency The unit of currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a trekking or climbing trip getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. We would suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime leading up to your trip. The best exercise for a trip like this is regular hiking but running and swimming are also good for developing better stamina. Before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of long walks in hilly country. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Climate Despite its northerly location, the climate of central Norway is moderated by the Gulf Stream and is surprisingly mild. From June through to early September, we can expect daytime temperatures of between 10 C - 20 C, depending on the altitude. At this season, night-time temperatures can still fall to 5-10 C. Sunny weather can be expected. However, the proximity of Norway's long Atlantic coastline means that the weather is unpredictable and you need to be prepared for rain. Daylight hours are long, especially in June and July, when the summer sun is never far below the horizon.

PAGE 9 Flight Information Flight Inclusive Or Land Only? On our website we display a UK Flight inclusive package price and Land only package price for the majority of our holidays. Flight Inclusive Notes The FLIGHT INCLUSIVE dates and prices are based on UK flights from London to Alesund. Outbound flights will usually depart the UK in the morning, arriving in the afternoon. Return flights will depart Alesund in the afternoon of the last day of the itinerary, arriving in the UK later the same evening. Regional departures are available on request. Please be aware that there are often only a limited number of seats available at the advertised price. To avoid paying flight supplements, we recommend that you book as early as possible, especially during peak times. If we are unable to secure seats at the price shown, or you have requested regional departures, we will contact you with an alternative quote. Please note that you may be asked to pay for your flights in advance of your final holiday balance. Note that if you book a package including flights with KE you will benefit from full financial protection. Land Only Notes The LAND ONLY dates and prices are for the itinerary joining in Alesund.
