1 RUSTENBURG GIRLS & RONDEBOSCH BOYS HIGH SCHOOLS CONSERVATION, ADVENTURE AND OUTDOOR EDUCATIONAL CAMP 29th March 1st April 2016 Our Aim is to Inspire, Inform, Mentor and Educate our youth into becoming environmental leaders Drie Kuilen is a 4300 ha proclaimed Nature Reserve situated between Montagu and Touwsrivier in the Klein Karoo. Only 220 kms from Cape Town with all the travelling on a tarred road except the last 20 kms which is on well-maintained gravel roads. There is sufficient accommodation for 75 people with two levels of accommodation Mongoose Manor, dormitory style accommodation that sleeps 54 and the remaining 21 beds are in 4 cottages and houses. Drie Kuilen Nature Reserve has collated a unique Conservation Education schedule for the group of learners that visit the reserve. The objective of our conservation educational program is to have the opportunity to directly interact with conservation management of protected areas. The learners will have contact with farm animals and have the opportunity to view some of the larger indigenous games species such as the rare Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra and other charismatic species such as Eland, Black Wildebeest, Gemsbok etc. Such experiences give the learners a deeper respect for our natural environment and the simple but very important ecological processes that take place. Drie Kuilen Nature Reserve offers a variety of activities and experiences for educational groups. This can include: learning about and setting up camera traps to catch the movement of secretive animals, setting up rodent traps to have a closer look at these smaller mammals, seeing and learning about some of the most beautiful birds that have been caught for bird ringing. They will have the opportunity in herding sheep to safety before nightfall, star gazing, fence patrols, erosion rehabilitation and how to contribute to the preservation of our natural resources. There also has to be a challenge!!! We utilise the reserve to provide these learners with opportunities to test their leadership and team working skills against their piers in a fun and competitive challenge. Below is a proposed schedule that is adaptable and open to change. In the event of inclement weather, hands-on activities such as using plants for medicinal and cooking purposes and how to use camera traps, will take place in Mongoose Manor s communal hall. Additionally, nets will be put up outside Mongoose Manor to catch the opportunistic birds taking a breather during rainy breaks. These will be banded, all the measurements recorded and learners will have the opportunity to take pictures of these birds up-close.

5 GENERAL INFORMATION Accommodation All the beds in Mongoose Manor come with fitted sheets and mattress protectors. Learners are to bring their own sleeping bags and pillows. Each room has its own shower, toilet and basin, but no baths. Services There is limited to no cell phone communication and nor is there internet facilities. The learners will be kept busy so there will be no need to play with their phones. It is suggested that the learners leave their mobile phones, tablets and other electronic equipment at home as we cannot be held responsible in the event of damage or loss to these items. Cameras are most welcome, but again these need to be robust and not expensive as they could be damaged or lost. The reserve does have a telephone, so in the event of a parent wanting to contact a learner, this is available and for the learners to contact their parents as well. Catering We cater for Kosher, Halaal and Vegetarian meals, so please ensure that you have included your child's preferences on the application form. Our meals are wholesome and nutritious and we provide ample fruit and juice throughout their stay, so please don t allow the learners to bring large quantities of sweets and chips, rather allow them to bring appropriate and nutritious snacks.
