3 YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg About the Y Since its founding in 1879, the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg has been a leader in nurturing the potential of children, teens and young adults, promoting healthy living, and fostering social responsibility. For over 135 years, the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg has provided thousands of children and adults with programs and services dedicated to personal growth and community development. Although best known for our work with youth and in promoting health, we also provide opportunities for people to develop leadership skills, philanthropic attitudes and a global perspective many of the tools needed for valuebased personal development. Mission The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg is a charitable organization whose mission is to foster the growth and development of people and communities in spirit, mind and body. Vision The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg is the champion of a broad, holistic and sustainable model of health and well-being, working to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities by enabling people to live to their full potential. Values In every YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg program, we focus on helping people develop seven core values: Caring Acting with compassion and concern for the well-being of others and the environment. Equality Providing opportunities for gender equality in the communities we serve, and treating individuals solely on the basis of their personal merits. Health Being committed to physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development. Honesty Demonstrating integrity and trustworthiness Inclusiveness Appreciating diversity, striving to be open to all, seeking to understand the differences and find common ground. Respect Recognizing and protecting the inherent worth of every person, including oneself, and promoting social justice. Responsibility Being dependable and accountable for choices, actions and commitments. About Camp Stephens Camp Stephens is a part of the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg s outdoor adventure camp program and is located in beautiful Lake of the Woods, Ontario. With 125 years of operation, our strong reputation is built on a foundation of tradition. The longest-running Y camp in Canada, we have stayed true to our commitment of building healthy communities one child at a time. Camp Stephens provides youth with the opportunity to connect and engage with nature and each other in ways that build confidence, improve social skills, and foster independence and leadership all while having fun. 4 YMCA-YWCA Camp Stephens Location & Transportation Camp Stephens is located on Copeland Island in Lake of the Woods near Kenora, Ontario approximately 2.5 hours from Winnipeg. Arranging transportation to and from Kenora is the responsibility of your group. Camp Stephens provides boat transportation from the Harbourfront in Kenora to Copeland Island. The boat ride is approximately 15 minutes. Please make sure luggage is well-labelled and waterproof. Rentals and Site Use Camp Stephens offers overnight camping experiences and wilderness canoe trips to school groups of various sizes, specializing in 3-day and 5-day experiences. All rentals include meals a sample schedule is located in the appendix. Our facility easily accommodates multiple groups at once. During the majority of the rental season, more than one school or organization is on-site at the same time. Exclusive site use can be granted to groups of 150 persons or more. Wilderness Canoe Trips Camp Stephens staff will plan a route based on the age and ability of your group. All groups will go over the basics of canoeing before heading out on their canoe trip. While on trail your group will sleep in tents and be guided by our knowledgeable staff that is suitably qualified to lead your group and look after any medical needs that may arise. All groups will have a designated lead and sweep boat to keep the group together as they travel on beautiful Lake of the Woods and area. Please contact Camp Stephens to arrange your next wilderness canoe trip. Slide Shows & School Visits We would be pleased to conduct a presentation at your school to help orient participants and/or parents to Camp Stephens facility and program and to answer any questions that attendees may have. The presentation lasts approximately 30 minutes and includes a 20-minute slide show. Please call the camp office to arrange. Accommodations Camp Stephens has 18 camper cabins spread out over the cabin line. Each cabin can house up to 10 kids of one gender and one of our YMCA-YWCA counsellors. Cabins are equipped with only the basic electricity, so kids are encouraged not to bring any electronic devices. All cabins have a separate centrally located washroom and shower facility. Teachers/Adult Supervisors have the ability to sleep in a teacher cabin separate from students and are provided their own cabin at a ratio of one supervisor for every 15 kids. Meals & Menu The Camp Stephens food services team prepares delicious meals, served family-style in the Dining Hall. Please refer to Appendix A for a sample menu. As part of the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg s mandate to promote healthy living, our menu is designed to consist of nutritious foods that are served with optimum portion sizes. We can prepare food for most diets (e.g., vegetarian, lactose intolerant, celiac, etc.) but please note we require 2 weeks notice to ensure all dietary needs can be accommodated. Our Dining Hall is a nut-free environment. YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg Camp Stephens Page 4 of 10
5 Medical Care and Medications Camp Stephens has a Wellness Coordinator on-site that is in charge of the care and well-being of our guests. The Wellness Coordinator ensures that all medication is stored securely and dispensed at the proper time and in proper dosage. Please note: All medication must be in original container with child s name, contents and dosage. In the case of emergency, one representative from both Camp Stephens and the school will accompany any student to the Kenora hospital, which is located approximately 15 minutes by motor boat from Camp Stephens. Staff Children s care has been entrusted to the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg for over 135 years and we take our obligation of earning that trust very seriously. Camp Stephens staff: are a minimum of 18 years old, have cleared a criminal record and child abuse registry check, hold current certifications in First Aid, CPR and lifeguarding (a minimum of Bronze Cross). Staff are carefully chosen for their skills, talents and experience. We have had a long-standing relationship with many of our staff long before they ever became staff! A majority of our staff have grown up through our camping programs, which gives us great insight into their attitudes, behaviour and capabilities. Camp Stephens counsellors are assigned to a group of students that they are with during the entire stay they sleep in the cabin, participate in activities and eat meals with this group. Additional staff members provide support, administration, food services, site maintenance, cleaning and boat driving. YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg Camp Stephens Page 5 of 10
6 Camp Activities We strive to create a positive and caring community where people can try new things and grow in confidence among friends. Our desire is to have fun, support each other, and learn to work both independently and as a team member. Canoeing Students learn about our national vehicle and gain an appreciation of how our great country was explored. With an emphasis on safety and fun, students learn the basic parts and operations of a canoe. Kayaking Students learn the basic parts and operations of kayaking. Students will learn the basic strokes to help maneuver their boat and discover the joy of kayaking through a variety of games. Sailing Our Sailing Coordinator oversees the entire sailing program at Camp Stephens. Using Hunter 170 Sailboats, participants learn the basics of sailing and how to harness the wind to move in their desired direction of travel. Climbing Participants learn the basics of climbing and learn to face their fears and challenge their abilities. Climbing is supervised by our Climbing Coordinator who has a minimum of Level 1 High Ropes and our counsellors who are trained belayers. Bouldering/Low Ropes These activities can be done for fun or focused on developing group dynamics and teamwork. As they work toward a common goal, students learn the importance of cooperation, communication, leadership, initiative and trust. These activities are led by our counsellors. High Ropes Participants challenge themselves on obstacles suspended high above the ground on cables secured to poles on the island floor. The elements are designed to pose a variety of climbing and personal challenges. High Ropes are supervised by our High Ropes Coordinator (who has a minimum of Level 1 High Ropes) and by our counsellors who are trained belayers. Swimming Swimming is done as a recreational activity and is not a mandatory activity. Participants must wear a PFD to go swimming and our supervised by our counsellors who have a minimum of Bronze Cross. International/Environmental Run by our International & Environmental Coordinator, this activity is an opportunity to learn about the world we live in. Presented in a creative manner and using games, participants learn about a different culture or ecosystem. YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg Camp Stephens Page 6 of 10
7 Wide Games These large game activities can cover the main campus and sometimes the cabin line as well. Wide games typically involve a lot of running and offer an opportunity to participate with a different group of people. Wide games include games such as capture the flag, cardoozy, survival, etc. Flat Games Typical gym games such as hockey, basketball, volleyball and dodgeball are played on a large flat area with basketball nets. Campfire No visit to Camp Stephens would be complete without a campfire! Camp staff begin with various silly songs and skits, and encourage songs and skits from your own students.
