WHAT S ON? What s On is now being published on the internet, so to keep up to date with those trips, go to and view the trips as they come to hand. Heed all instructions given to you by the Trip Leader. If seatbelt are fitted, they must be worn at all times. No alcohol to be consumed on club trips. Convoy procedure - always keep the vehicle behind you in sight, always stop at intersections to ensure the vehicle behind can see you. Do not leave the trip early without notifying the trip leader. Leave all gates as found. Always hold safety in mind especially during recovery procedures, all spectators are to keep clear. Never, under any circumstances slip a towrope over a tow ball. Do not join 2 towropes with a shackle loop one through the other in a secure knot, then slip a strong piece of wood between the two to ensure that they can be separated after the recovery. Fire extinguishers are compulsory minimum of 2kg for forest trips your extinguisher must be operable with current certification & check the weight. You must have tow hooks front and back that are securely mounted to the chassis with high tensile bolts. All vehicles must carry a nylon towrope or strop. All vehicles must carry a spade.
Hi all, As you know, we ve gone through the process of reviewing our club rules, in-particular our trip rules. Well the revised rules were put into practice yesterday in Waiuku with good result. It was great to see all the young ones out in their Hi -Vis and that active adult supervision in force. Supervision is the key. Remember that as a driver, you are responsible for everyone in your vehicle, looking out for them and making sure they are safe. Thanks again to all those who sent in their feedback as we worked through this process. It s always good to hear your thoughts. Thanks also to the committee with the help of Nick Hawken, Sarah Ivicevich and Murray Atkinson, for your time working on this over the past month. Something that was brought up during this process, is that some had felt in the past that they couldn t raise their concerns or make a suggestion because they were new to the club, or because they felt there were more experienced members calling the shots, or for whatever reason didn t feel like their thoughts would be welcomed. For the record, I m always keen to hear what you are thinking. It s the committee s job to do what is in the best interest of the club, and you - the members - are the club. So please feel free to speak up, whether you are a new member, or an old one (or maybe a new member that s old?). For safety concerns, it s really important that you speak up there and then. For other feedback, talk to your group leader, the trip leader, or someone on the committee. We need to work to create a culture within the club where feedback is always welcomed, and where everyone feels comfortable to speak up in any situation...and to start the ball rolling, if you have ideas on how we can be better at this, I m all ears. Our group had an enjoyable day in Waiuku. We kept everyone entertained, I formed a new track and everyone followed me (some a little nervously), and I even managed to get well and truly stuck. So the late night slaving to put the winch back together and back in the truck was a good idea after all...but I have to say, winching without a co-driver isn t too much fun (the real reason why I was asking on the facebook group if someone wanted to come for a ride!). Thanks to all the group leaders, and a special thanks to Don and everyone who has helped him on the reccys this year - a great network of tracks is being developed and it s a real credit to you and your hard work. See you out on the tracks, Jeremy A Proud Member of

TRIP GRADINGS A minimum of a first aid kit, 2kg fire extinguisher (or 2 x 1kg), recovery strap and a spade are to be carried on all trips. It is useful to have a suitably sized block of wood to place under your jack to prevent it sinking in soft ground when changing tyres. If your spare tyre is under your vehicle it may be handy to secure it safely in the back as you often can t get it from underneath in 4x4 track conditions. Important note: when making snatch recoveries ensure you use a snatch strap with some stretch and not a tow strap with no stretch and use suitable rated recovery points! Never recover using a tow ball, remove it and attach strap with a rated shackle, (Shackle to be 3.2 tonne or better, recovery hook to be fastened with 2x 12mm bolts, grade 8.8 or imperial equivalent). Please note that the grade shown for a track may vary and be slightly easier or harder than description, due to changes in weather and track conditions since last visited. To avoid disappointment on the day, it is advised that you talk with the trip leader beforehand to get the latest track update and discuss your vehicle and capabilities. Grade 1 - Easy (Scenic/social/touring) Novice drivers with little or no four wheel driving experience required. Easy driving on sealed and unsealed roads, no rough tracks and road or all terrain tyres. Minimal chance of paint scratching. Good family outing for people wanting to ease their way into four-wheel driving (more of a touring style of driving with a destination in mind). Grade 2 - Intermediate Drivers with some 4wding experience, that have driven off-road on farms, beaches, etc. Easy off-road tracks, some mud, all-terrain tyres or better, Hi and Low range 4wd,rated front and rear recovery points, basic recovery gear (snatch strap, 2 rated shackles, gloves and spade) and appropriate driver knowledge, as snatch strap recovery may be necessary. Most obstacles are able to be by-passed if drivers wish too. A small chance of light paint scratching. These are the tracks all standard 4wd s should be capable of and why you own a 4wd. Grade 3 - Medium Drivers with moderate and sound 4wding knowledge and experience, who are comfortable with slippery driving conditions. Steeper terrain, rutted tracks, with close obstacles to manoeuver around. Snatch recovery is likely to be required. Mud terrain tyres preferred, road tires are not acceptable (mud terrain tyres for wet weather conditions). Rated front and rear recovery points, basic recovery gear (snatch strap, 2 rated shackles, gloves and spade), and appropriate driver knowledge. Some scratching or minor scrapes possible. These tracks are ideally suited to those who enjoy 4wding in most conditions, don t mind the odd scratch and have fitted mud terrain tyres. Winches are not necessary on all vehicles; this will be at the trip leader s discretion depending on weather conditions. Grade 4 - Hard Confident, experienced drivers in all aspects of 4wding. Rough tracks, muddy, steep and slippery terrain, rocks, deep water, snatch and winch recovery likely. Rated recovery points front and rear, mud terrain tyres or better, and a winch along with relevant recovery gear (snatch strap, rated shackles, tree trunk protector, winch rope dampener, gloves and spade). Some vehicle damage may be likely. These trips are great for experienced drivers with well-equipped 4wd sthat have increased ground clearance and vehicle protection, capable of self-recovery if necessary. Grade 5 - Extreme Very experienced drivers able to handle self-recovery and the harshest conditions, where anything may arise. Very steep, deeply rutted tracks or rock hopping will be encountered. Front and rear recovery points (rated), full recovery gear (snatch strap, rated shackles, tree trunk protector, winch extension, winch rope dampener, drag chain, gloves, spade and spares), and appropriate driver knowledge. Winching will be expected and an electric or motorised winch is compulsory on all vehicles. Aggressive mud terrain or Simex style tyres are essential. Warning: Vehicle damage is likely to occur. These trips are for heavily modified 4wd s and experienced drivers only. This category describes trips that are at competition level.

The day saw an 8:30am start to the annual Muriwai Beach Clean-Up which sees four wheel drive clubs from the Auckland region unite (Auckland Four Wheel Drive Club, Land Rover Owners Club Auckland, North West OHV Club, Rodney Off Road Club) with the Muriwai Park rangers to clean up the rubbish that washes ashore on Muriwai beach from ships and also sadly rubbish left by less thoughtful beach goers. Climbing back up from the creek bed
This event has a steadily growing number of 4wd enthusiasts both young and old who are happy to give their time, vehicles and energy to ensure their children (whom also participated) get to enjoy pristine New Zealand beaches in the future. Volunteers were grouped, and each group was given a 5 kilometre strip of beach to comb for rubbish. As a result, in less than three hours using the gloves and rubbish bags provided by the council, a nine cubic metre skip bin was loaded with a range of rubbish from broken glass bottles and pieces of plastic, to fishing nets and polystyrene. After the unloading of the rubbish, as always the Council provided an excellent BBQ as a way of thanking those who participated. As many of the Muriwai Beach Clean-Up participants are regular beach users, it has been heartening to them to see the trend forming where beach users proactively pick up the rubbish that is left behind by others and placing it together for ease of collection at the Rimmers Road car park. Unfortunately there are no bin facilities available to them currently. The Clean-Up efforts on Sunday is one of many community driven events to keep the beach clean. Everyone from schools to caravan associations and local residents now take a proactive role in their community environment. Linton and Sarah

99 Rivers 2016 South Island 4WD Tag Along Tour 12th - 26th January 2016 South Island 4WD tag-along tour with a difference Departing Auckland on the 11 th the Tour proper starts in Blenheim on 12th of Jan 2016 and ends 15 days later in Kaikoura on the 26 th. We will be heading off South via the Molesworth before turning West over to the Coast, then plunging down deep into South Westland to the very end of the road. From there we'll make our crossing into Central Otago before returning up through the Canterbury High-country and then finally turning Eastward and up into the Clarence to complete the loop. A fair bit of tarmac is of course unavoidable but you can be assured this back country and off-road adventure will include many of the best bits, iconic trails and off-road highlights that our great country has to offer. What's more we will be doing it all in style and in, we hope, great company. Sampling good wines and local fare along the way will be a feature of this trip and special access to some of NZ's top wineries and vineyards and craft breweries is planned along the journey. So while you're developing your overland touring skills, taking in the pristine scenery and local history of our trail you might also discover a new favourite beverage or two hidden along the way. The Tour will include a clover leaf format in the Queenstown area with some free days so people can chill out and/or do their own thing if they choose or stay with the group to tackle some of the local tracks. Accommodation will be on share-twin basis at motels and lodges with some a very special stays planned making it an ideal adventure for partners. Camping or 'Glamping' is of course always an option for the keen and people will be free to drop in and out of the tour as they wish. While this is not intended to be a hard-core 4wd trip by any means you will certainly need a capable and reliable vehicle with good ground clearance and decent all-terrain tyres as a minimum.
Low range capability would be advisable and snorkels while not necessarily essential would probably be a comfort. As conditions permit some of the off-road segments will include stream and river crossings of varying depths up to 500mm which would be our probable self imposed limit. Our team will include a number of experienced 4WD enthusiast with highly capable vehicles to guide and encourage the less experience driver but you should be prepared to have a go at the odd challenge along the way. Advice on what recovery equipment you will need to bring will be provided but will include the basics. Numbers will be limited to perhaps 10 vehicles as we intend this remain an intimate and private adventure. Accordingly you will need contact us quickly to register your interest. Final costs will be determined once numbers are firmed but assuming you join in for the full 15 day tour, you should budget on spending perhaps $2, per person including fuel, meals and accommodation. You will definitely be required to pack a sense of humour and will want to be a team player. This will be a shared adventure and your active participation and input will be welcomed. Some of us no doubt will be travelling down from Auckland so the Mainlanders in the team will need to be especially tolerant of any wayward Jafas. So, is that shiny 4WD in your garage actually getting used as God intended? This will be a road trip you will never forget, for all the right reasons. Go on. You know you want to. For more details and to register your interest you can send an to: kiwibill@gmail.com. And do this soon as we will need to be booking accommodation. Cheers and happy trails Bill Ryan EDITOR DISCLAIMER: Pictures featured in this article courtesy of google and are representative of the areas mentioned
