2 Grandmaster s Palace Valletta The Grandmaster s Palace officially known as The Palace occupies a city block in the centre of Valletta, and it is the largest palace in the city. It was built between the 16 th and 18 th centuries as the palace of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John, who ruled Malta, and was also known as the Magisterial Palace. It eventually became the Governor s Palace, and it currently houses the Office of the President of Malta. The Palace State Rooms When not hosting functions of state, the magnificent halls at first floor are open to the public. The Council Chamber is home to a rare collection of exotic Gobelin tapestries depicting hunting scenes from different continents. The State Dining Room is adorned with portraits of the Presidents of Malta and one painting of Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Malta. The Supreme Council Hall is decorated with a cycle of twelve frescoes by Mattia Perez d Aleccio depicting the Great Siege of The Ambassador s Hall and main corridors are lined with portraits of European monarchs and Grand Masters of the Order. The Palace Armoury The Age of Chivalry comes alive in one of the most prominent arms collections, with weapons and armour that provide a human context to the Great Siege of Malta, and the military provenance of the Knights of St. John. Highlights include the personal armour of Grand Master La Valette, the dazzling parade armour of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, and a collection of weapons used by the Ottomans during the Great Siege of Malta Maritime Museum Housed within the Old Naval bakery, the Malta Maritime Museum charts Malta s maritime history and lore within a Mediterranean context. It also illustrates the global nature of seafaring and its impact on Malta s society. The museum houses numerous artefacts highlighting the different epochs of Malta s history that is inadvertently tied to the sea. The Museum aims at illustrating Malta s maritime history from prehistory to the present day and to illustrate the fascination of the sea within a Mediterranean context, without neglecting the overall global nature of seafaring. These aims are achieved by the constant search for, identification, and acquisition of artefacts related to the museum s mission. This task has been aided by the constant donations over these past years by the Maltese general public, foreign individuals, companies, corporate bodies, foreign maritime and naval museums, foreign navies, and Maltese and foreign ambassadors and high commissioners. This is a large achievement when one considers that the museum didn t even have one single artifact in Today the museum houses a unique collection of over 20,000 artefacts belonging to Malta s Maritime past. Nowadays the museum is proud to showcase some unique artefacts including the largest known roman anchor in the world, the earliest known ex:voto on the island, the largest ship model belonging to the Order of St John, the largest collection of cannon on the island, the Napoleonic figure head of the 110 gun ship HMS Hibernia, a 1950s working marine steam engine, and a collection of 60+ boats. The Malta Maritime Museum at the Marina Grande helps visitors chart 7,000 years of history under one roof.
3 Tour of the Outskirts of Mdina by Karozzin The Inquisitor s Palace The Inquisitor s Palace, situated in the heart of Vittoriosa, is one of the very few surviving palaces of its kind which, in the early modern period could be found all over Europe and South America. Many of these palaces simply succumbed to the ravages of time or were victims of the anti-reactionary power unleashed by the French Revolution. Fortunately, the Maltese Inquisitor s Palace, throughout its five centuries of history, always hosted high-ranking officials representing the main powers on the island, who therefore ensured its survival. Mgr Pietro Dusina arrived in Malta in 1574 as the first general inquisitor and apostolic delegate of the Maltese Islands. The Grand Master offered him the unused palace as an official residence. Almost all successive inquisitors sought to transform the palace into a decent mansion. They all shared the same cultural values of clerical baroque Roman society, and by the mid-18th century they had managed successfully to transform the building into a typical Roman palace. The palace also managed to survive through the bombings of the Second World War and the threat of modern development. It is today the only Inquisitor s Palace open to the public in the world and an architectural gem, representative of the chequered history and European heritage of the Maltese islands. We will commence the day by a tour of the outskirts of Mdina by Karozzin a Maltese traditional mode of transport consisting of a carriage pulled by a horse. Mdina is a fortified medieval town enclosed in bastions, located on a large hill in the centre of Malta. The town was the old capital of Malta, and with its narrow streets, few inhabitants and beautiful views over the Island it is truly a magical town. Mdina is referred to as the Silent City by Maltese and visitors alike - no cars (except those of a limited number of residents) have permission to enter Mdina and the town provides a relaxing atmosphere among the visitors walking its narrow streets and alleyways. Mdina has a small population of around 250 people who live in 0.9km 2, within the city walls. In contrast, outside the city walls, the village of Rabat is just a step away, and has a population of over 11,000 people. The medieval town of Mdina presents a mix of Norman and Baroque architecture and is the home to many palaces, most of which today serve as private homes. The large and striking Cathedral of the Conversion of St. Paul stands in the main square of the town. Mdina was first inhabited and fortified around 700 BC by the Phoenicians and was at that time called Maleth. Mdina benefits from its good location on the island s highest point, far away from the sea. Under the Roman Empire the Roman governor built his palace in Mdina and it is said that even St. Paul stayed there after he was shipwrecked in Malta. It was the Normans who surrounded the city with its thick defensive fortifications and they also widened the moat around Mdina. After an earthquake in 1693, there was the need to redesign parts of the city. This introduced Baroque designs within the city, and the Knights of Malta rebuilt the cathedral as well as the Magisterial Palace and Palazzo Falson.
4 Palazzo Falson A Historic House Museum The splendid Palazzo Falson, which is one of the oldest surviving homes in Malta, built in the 13th century, has a dazzling and extensive private collection on display, including furniture, watches, silver, jewellery, oriental rugs, paintings, armoury and books. The Palazzo is named after its 16th century owner Vice Admiral Michele Falsone, although the amazing collection was brought together by researcher, philanthropist and artist Captain Olof Gollcher O.B.E. ( ), who bought the Palazzo in Capt. Gollcher s interest in weaponry is evident through the extensive collection on display in the Armoury. The walls are hung with an interesting array of swords, polearms, pistols and guns. The paintings collection is made up of more than 200 works which include a number of portraits, including family ones, biblical and mythological scenes, and some marine-themed ones, which reflect the fact that the Gollcher family business was in shipping. There are a number of significant 17th century paintings in this collection, including ones attributed to Sir Anthony Van Dyck, David Teniers the Younger, Nicolas Poussin, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Mattia Preti. The impressive silver collection of more than 800 items includes some noteworthy and significant pieces of Maltese, Continental and British silver, most of which are on display in the Strongroom, where Gollcher used to lock up his silver when he went away. Palazzo Falson has an impressive collection of over eighty Oriental rugs from different areas such as Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, and a selection of these are displayed in the Carpet Gallery. The wealth of the collections held at the palazzo offer the visitor the enriching experience of a museum visit, but within the intimate setting of a private house. Dress Code JACKET & TIE FOR HOLY MASS, GOZO CIRCLE MEETING AND FAREWELL DINNER DANCE INFORMAL ATTIRE FOR ALL OTHER FUNCTIONS. Travel Insurance You are strongly advised to take out travel insurance to include cancellation charges and medical costs.
5 The Cittadella Gozo A visit to the Citadel should not be missed. Before you have fully passed under the archway into the Citadel, you will be welcomed by the majestic sight of Gozo Cathedral, across the small square at the top of a wide flight of steps guarded by two 17th-century bronze cannon. A walk along the fortified ramparts is rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Gozo s hills and valleys, villages and churches with Malta in the distance across the sea. Only a couple of families live within the Citadel walls today. In the square you will find the magnificent baroque Cathedral of Gozo dedicated to Santa Marija, or more precisely the Assumption of the Virgin Mary; as well as the Law Courts and the Bishop s Palace. The Old Citadel (also called the Cittadella or Kastell) rises dramatically above ir-rabat (Victoria). Built at a perfect strategic vantage point, it defiantly dominates the skyline exactly as intended by the military architects who built it. The Citadel has been at the centre of activity on the island since possibly Neolithic times, and was certainly fortified during the Bronze Age around 1500 BC. It was later developed by the Phoenicians and in Roman times, it was a complex Acropolis. Gozo was a privileged Roman Municipality, independent of Malta and the Citadel was the centre of its administrative as well as its military and religious life. An important temple to the goddess Juno stood where the Cathedral now stands. The north side of the Citadel dates back to the period of the Aragonese, while the south flank, overlooking Ir-Rabat (Victoria), was re-constructed under the Knights of St. John between 1599 and This rebuilding came towards the end of Gozo s darkest period, when for two centuries, marauding Turks and Berber corsairs had harassed and pillaged the Maltese Islands. For this reason, until 1637, the entire population of Gozo was required by law to spend the night within the Citadel for their own safety. The climax of the Turkish raids on Gozo came in A strong Ottoman naval force, after an unsuccessful attack on Malta, turned its attention to the less well protected Gozo. After a short siege the crumbling medieval walls of the Citadel were overwhelmed and the defenders begged for an honourable capitulation. Tragically for the population, (then numbering around 5000), the surrender terms were far from honourable. With the exception of just 40 elderly and disabled citizens, the entire population of Gozo was chained and taken into slavery. It took nearly 50 years to re-populate the island and rebuild the Citadel in its present layout. During our impressive visit of the Cittadella, we shall also visit the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, the Gran Castello Historic House, the Gozo Nature Museum and the Old Prison.
