5 Group history Although the original company was incorporated in 1970, the origins of the family business can be traced to well over a hundred years. Way back in 1890 Francis Borg, then a young man of 16, began commuting between the two major islands of the Maltese archi pelago. He was trained as a mastercarpenter in Malta and on his return back to the sister island of Gozo he set up his own small workshop. After emigrating to the United States in the beginning of the century he returned a few years afterwards to develop his original business. His sons, Francis Xavier and George, took over his concern soon after the Second World War. In 1970 the company was registered under the name Francis X. Borg Co. Ltd. It was the year when the step from a simple carpentry workshop to industrialization was taken through the construction of the first factory in Gozo. By the early 1980 s the company was in a position to export kitchen cabinet doors to the UK whilst maintaining a solid local market base. Expanding from one small showroom to another, the company managed to increase substantially its share of the local market. It was during the eighties that the company became known in the local scene by the trade mark of FXB a name which from then onwards became synonymous with style, craftsmanship, quality, service and the optimum in furniture. In 1991 the company which by then had changed its name to F.X. Borg Furniture Ltd. received the National Award for Achievement in Industry assigned to locally controlled companies. Since then the company enlarged its showroom facilities. Other companies all of which are connected to the furniture industry were eventually set up, thus forming the FXB Group with FXB Holdings Ltd. being the mother company. The Group manufactures its furniture in four plants in Malta and Gozo with a total covered area of 10,000m2. The Group is presently specializing in the manufacturing of Contract furniture for Europe and North Africa together with the normal lines of domestic furniture both for the local and export markets. 5

6 Contracts division The FXB Contract s section identifies itself with the whole Group s strategy of supplying products that are synonymous with style, craftsmanship, quality, and the optimum in furniture. The design and manufacture of contract furniture and joinery requires considerable expertise and we are involved at a number of stages, from design to manufacture to installation, liaising with the designers and coordinators to give a total service. We know that contract work is about tight deadlines, adapting to the requirements of the job and a practical flexible approach. From experience, we have also realized that design, budgetary constraints, deadlines and site installation are all factors in a complex equation. Our multidisciplinary management team can be tasked to ensure that the logistics of the project are completed efficiently, on time and to budget. Our technical staff and production facilities can ensure that the product we are entrusted with, is manufactured to the correct specifications, standards and quality. 6 Our main targeted niche is four and five star hotels in Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. We have already performed large contracts including a number for international groups. Whilst we are committed to customer satisfaction, we have continued to invest in technology and skills. The FXB Group can provide a comprehensive role in each and every project by supplying the following services: Furniture design: we can work with designers and assist in the design process. Manufacture of guest room sample: we can manufacture a sample complete with exact room measurements, to give a replica as to how the room would look like. Furniture supply: apart from the capability of producing all the guestroom furniture, we can also supply counters, public area furniture, upholstery, bedding and all the furnishing and lightings.
