On Monday, campers were visited by Archeologist Emily Murray who taught the children all about archeological digs and prehistoric discoveries. They then went on a search for trilobites and fossils around the Environmental Discovery Center! On Tuesday, the guest speaker was Diane Simmons who taught the campers about the Timucuan Indians. After her presentation, they gathered around to play marbles, jacks, pick-up sticks, and other fun games that existed before modern technology. Campers also made their very own butter from scratch and enjoyed it on crackers for their snack. The campers also got to enjoy other interesting projects this week as well, such as making fossils, painting a dinosaur, learning about rocks and minerals, cracking open geodes. Archery and fishing were another success this week! On Wednesday the children caught and released a total of 37 fish! And many of the children hit the bullseye in archery on their very first try! Friday wrapped up the week with a pirate day. The day consisted of pirate games, making pirate hats, decorating treasure chests, and going on a treasure hunt. Campers could test their skill at pirate hook ring toss, or line up at the photo booth to take pirate pictures. It was another fun-filled week at Enviro Camp!

Beginning June 25 through July 16, 2018, disinfection of the water distribution system will be performed with application of free chlorine (a stronger disinfectant) rather than chloramines (a longer-lasting disinfectant comprised of combined chlorine-ammonia). This temporary disinfectant conversion, in conjunction with a coordinated flushing exercise, is a common practice for enhancing the effectiveness and reliability of disinfection in water distribution systems and is recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection. The normal use of the chloramines disinfectant will resume upon completion of the conversion period. During this period the water continues to be of the highest quality and totally safe to drink. Customers may experience a slight difference in the taste and odor of the water as a result of the alternate disinfectant used. Customers on dialysis using proportioning machines to prepare dialysate are advised to contact their physician to obtain the appropriate steps to accommodate this change in water disinfectant use. Customers having fish tanks or aquatic species are advised to contact a professional aquarist to minimize any adverse effects on these items associated with chlorine. South Beach Dance Showcase South Beach Dance Academy presented the Spring Dance Showcase at the Ormond Beach

This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of the founding of South Beach Dance Academy.

3 PAGE 3 Summer Basketball Camp The Nova Community Center is ready for the summer, and the Summer Basketball League has started! Coach Hill had the players form teams and make a schedule for each team to play each other. Most weeks the teams will get to play two to three times during the week. Coach Hill is still looking for teams to increase the level of competition. If you are a basketball player years of age that would be interested in playing, call the Nova Community Center at South Beach Dance Showcase South Beach Dance Academy presented the Spring Dance Showcase at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, June 9. This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of the founding of South Beach Dance Academy. Two shows were performed, a matinee at 2:00 p.m., and an evening performance at 7:00 p.m. The recitals demonstrated skills the students have developed from their instruction in numerous dance styles including ballet and pointe, jazz, tap, and hip hop. The audience of family, friends, and the public experienced an outstanding performance from the dance students.

4 PAGE 4 Acrylics & Collage Week two of Art Explosions Camp started on Monday, June 11. This week s theme was Acrylics & Collage. Children learned how to create realistic and abstract designs and include collage in their art projects, all while reviewing the basics of painting they learned last week. Art Explosions Camp also welcomed a few local artists this week who came and gave art presentations to the children. Last week, four parents of the campers, also local artists, gave presentations as well. This week s guest speakers touched on subjects such as colors, textures, and balance. On Friday, children lined up to head over to the Ormond Memorial Art Museum for a day field trip to visit the Four Footed & Fanciful art exhibit currently on display. The children got to view all the paintings and art work and learn more about each one and find inspiration from them! 6 PAGE 6 FEMA Hazard Mi ga on Grant Awards Aerial 2009 No Name Storm In June 2017, the City submitted four applications to the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management for FEMA funding under the Hurricane Matthew federal disaster declaration FEMA 4283-DR-FL. Application criteria requires that state and local governments have an approved Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) to be eligible to apply and require that projects submitted are included in the LMS. Ormond Beach is a participant in the Volusia County LMS. The City is pleased to announce that three of those requests were approved. HMGP funding becomes available following a Presidential Disaster Declaration for counties that were significantly impacted. The purpose of HMGP is to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters and to enable mitigation measures to be implemented. The projects awarded funding include: Fleming Avenue Stormwater Improvements This project will provide improvements to the stormwater system and other modifications to mitigate regularly occurring flooding along Fleming Avenue from Center Street to Nova Road by extending and interconnecting the Fleming Avenue storm pipe with the Central Park lake drainage system to provide an alternate outlet for the stormwater runoff collection system. Under the agreement for the HMGP grant, FEMA will pay up to 75% of the cost associated with the project. The estimated project cost is $645,300. Under the terms of the grant, FEMA will pay $483,975 and the City will pay $161,325. Wilmette Avenue Stormwater Pump Station Under a previous grant, sluice gates were installed at the four Laurel Creek crossings of Wilmette Avenue, and intake and discharge piping were installed to use with temporary rental pumps. This project will install a permanent pump station to eliminate reliance on costly rental pumps that require lead time to order, deliver, and setup diverting valuable resources that could be better used in the event of an impending storm. The total project cost is $254,754, with $191, (75%) in HMGP grant funding, and $63, in City matching funds. Pump Station at Central Park Lake 5 - Following the May 2009 no name storm event in which approximately 72 homes were flooded in the Laurel Creek Drainage Basin Area, the City Commission authorized an investigation of the flooded areas that occurred within the City to see what could be done to protect the areas against future flooding. The study recommended a two (2) phase approach to improve the drainage in the Laurel Creek Drainage Basin area. Phase 1 consisted of interconnecting the Central Park lakes along with connectivity to Laurel Creek, and recommended construction of flap gates and an emergency pump, infrastructure piping, and connection location at Wilmette Avenue. Phase 1 improvements were completed in 2014 and are mostly recognized during lesser storm events as opposed to the 100 year and May 2009 storm events. The Phase 1 improvements will reduce the frequency of road flooding, but more importantly, provide the infrastructure required for the more aggressive Phase 2. Phase 1 improvements totaled $4.80 million with nearly $3.1 million received in grant funding provided by HMGP. Phase 2, which was recently approved, will expand upon the interconnectivity of Phase 1 and provide a means to drawdown the five interconnected lakes more rapidly during more extreme storm events. Phase 2 consists of a flood control pump station at Central Park off Fleming Avenue which would be located next to the southernmost Central Park Lake, and would discharge to the Halifax River via a force main located along the Fleming Avenue corridor. The pump station will be used to drawdown the Central Park lake system prior to large storm events to provide additional stormwater runoff storage, as well as to provide emergency pumping ability to the river during flood events. Including the design, permitting, and survey costs, the total estimated cost for Phase 2 of this project is $8,700,000. The City was recently awarded a grant from the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) in the amount of $811, representing 75% for design, permitting, and survey costs associated with the Fleming Avenue Pump Station at Central Park, Lake 5. The total design phase cost is $1,082,456.00, with the City s required 25% match being $270, Hand Ave. after Phase 1 HMGP
