Marshfield Municipal Airport Airport Manager s Report June 21st, 2017 May 31st marked the end of a 31 year legacy of Duffy providing flight checks to pilots. The Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards Disctrict Office in Wisconsin relies on qualified pilots called Designated Pilot Examiners for pilots to go to for their oral and practical exams to get the pilot license. For 31 years Duffy has been one of the busiest designated pilot examiners in the State of Wisconsin. This is mainly been because he has been available Monday through Friday and then sometimes on Weekends. He has provided pilots flight checks in sport, private, instrument and commercial ratings. In his career he has completed over 6,000 flight checks with pilot applicants. This does not mean that Pictured Above, Left to Right: John Chmiel, Father / Instructor, Duffy Gaier, DPE and Wyatt Chmiel, Son / Student. Wyatt was Duffy s last flight check on May 31st, John was extremely proud of his son earning his commercial pilot certificate that day. John and his family manage the Wausau Downtown Airport.
Pictured below: Wyatt and Duffy on May 31st 2017 doing the ground portion / oral of Wyatt s examination for his commercial pilot rating. Duffy is retiring from aviation. He is still very much active and will be at the airport as usual. He will also be offering his services at the airport as a flight instructor for those people who want to do a biannual flight review, instrument proficiency check, or people who just want to go up with Duffy. The sign by the intersection of Central and 29th Street became damaged in the wind storm in May. One side of the sign was blown in, while the other side of the sign was blown out. Graphic House, the creators of the sign reposition and secured the sign parts in place.
The MALSR Approach lights on 34 have not been working. The lights will not turn on when clicked on with a radio from the terminal or airplane. Merkels has been working on it to see if they could find the problem. Nick DeNardis looked at the receiver and noticed the antenna was broken on the unit. Nick is presently working to get a new antenna to put on the unit. One of the light bars on the MALSR approach lights was also damaged. We are not certain what the caused the damage, but we are thinking perhaps a snowmobiler strayed from the trail, and went over the hill where the light bar is placed and ran over the bar. Jeff contacted the Bureau of Aeronautics regarding the Master Plan. Mike Gabor at the Bureau suggested that a Master Plan is something that the larger airports do actively as they have a higher passenger and traffic loads. Mike said it is up to the local authority if they want to pursue a Master Plan. An Airport Layout Plan would cover what we need in Marshfield and would be less expensive. This month celebrates 10 years that the new terminal building has been in existence. The terminal building was the effort of the airport committee, airport management, City of Marshfield, Bureau of Aeronautics, and many local contractors and contractors from central Wisconsin. It serves as a first impression for anyone flying into Marshfield. It has been imitated a few times throughout the State as other airports have made buildings with similar designs since ours was build. We are still very proud of what we accomplished.
This month we saw two based aircraft leave Marshfield. The Spirit helicopter has been re-located from Marshfield to Stevens Point. The reason being that Ascension retains ownership of the helicopter in the Hospital sale between Ascension and Marshfield Clinic. Ascension moved the helicopter so it would be able to provide support for the Ascension hospitals. The Maule owned by Chris Owens has been moved to Milwaukee. Chris and Melissa Owens have moved out of Marshfield as Melissa has taken a new job in the Milwaukee area. Chris s job allows him to work from home. Photo of Chris Owen s Maule, Photo by Chris The Flying Hamburger Social has started in June and will go until the end of August this year for Wisconsin. Duffy s Aircraft has signed up to host two socials this year. July 5th will be our first social. We will be hosting our second event on August 2nd this year. We invite everyone to come out and join us to see some airplanes fly in. The social brings anywhere from 30 to 200 pilots in for a visit. Typically we have one to 45 aircraft fly in. Depending upon weather, we may have a good or bad turn out.
EAA 992 has a formal request this evening to be allowed to have the EAA 992 Pancake breakfast at the airport on July 16th, Their plan is to have the breakfast from 8 AM until Noon. They are in need of a few volunteers to help with food. Duffy s Aircraft will once again be offering discounted rides for the day. This pancake breakfast is advertised throughout the community for them to come on out to the airport to enjoy a breakfast, see the airport and experience aviation up close. In 2016 the breakfast was moved from the maintenance hangar to the main hangar. This location seemed to work out better for everyone as it provided more space for the breakfast as well as it brought more people through the terminal building. EAA 992 is once again requesting to host it in the main hangar. Happy Flying - Duffy, Alice, Robert and Jeff Gaier

The Trickle Effect - These are businesses that we know of that have been utilized by the patrons of the airport this month. They spend money in Marshfield and the surrounding communities. This is just from conversations we have with pilots and passengers. There are more business that do benefit from the airport each month. These are just the ones we know about from the people that have discussed their time at Marshfield Marshfield Hotel Holiday Inn Blue Heron / West 14th Marshfield Clinic St. Joseph s Hospital Festival Foods V & H Heavy Trucks Roehl Transport Custom Fabrication and Repair Subway Chips McDonalds Little Casears Target Hardees The Store Baltus Nasonville Dairy El Mexical Nuts Deep Crabby Daves Kentucky Fried Chicken Lamers Smokehouse BBQ Nora s Kohl s Department Store Businesses Or Groups That Used The Airport Conference Room This Month Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 992 (Marshfield & Medford Group) Toastmasters of Marshfield Central Wisconsin Apple User Group Marshfield Youth Hockey C12 Group (Christian CEOs and owners building great businesses for a greater purpose) Tiger Blue Line Club Marshfield Country Club Golfers DAV V & H Trucks Summary Report - This will be the last month of the activity report that will have Duffy s Flight Checks listed in the report. The corresponding graph will be removed the next activity report. Helicopter traffic was significantly impacted by the departure of the Spirit of Marshfield. I expect those numbers to continue to decline until Marshfield Clinic gets a replacement helicopter. Rain impacted a lot of flights this month. There would have been more flight training if the weather wouldn t have been an issue. Jet, Turbo Prop and Twin Engine were up a little this month as was Sport.
On nice quiet evenings Mark Nelms may be found at the airport with his truck, trailer and powered parachute.
