Beaches Introduction 6 Costa Brava The Costa Brava and its beaches are a small piece of paradise that everyone will love. More than 200 kilometres of coastline, from Blanes to Portbou, that offer everything from the smallest pristine inlets to urban beaches with all the amenities you can think of. Whether you re looking for fine or coarse sand or pebble beaches, whether you love the company of a crowd or prefer secluded, hard-to-reach get-aways, where the only sound to be heard is the sea on the rocks, or the gentle rustling of pine trees in the breeze... In the Costa Brava there s a place for everyone, whatever your tastes. Cliffs, dunes, pine forests, urban areas and water from green to blue and every shade in between, the Costa Brava offers unimaginable riches, in the form of nature, culture, history, cuisine and leisure opportunities. You can discover the legacy of the Greeks and Romans, who chose the Costa Brava as their door to the Iberian Peninsula; walk through medieval villages; see the sights that inspired geniuses like Salvador Dalí and Josep Pla; enjoy diverse music festivals and eat in restaurants that collectively boast 17 Michelin stars. You can also take in sites of huge natural interest, amongst which you can find Natural Parks such as the Aiguamolls de l Empordà, the Cap de Creus and the Montgrí, les illes Medes i el Baix Ter. With the City of Girona and its beautiful Old Town just a stone s throw away, and the ever-present Pyrenees on the horizon providing a wonderful contrast to the coastline, the Costa Brava offers something for everyone. More than 200 kilometres of coastline, from Blanes to Portbou, that offer everything from the smallest pristine inlets to urban beaches with all the amenities you can think of.

Beaches Beaches and coves 8 Beaches and coves From the most hidden coves to the almost endless beaches

Beaches Portbou 11 1 Del Pi Beach PORTBOU This is the first beach on the Costa Brava accessible by land when coming from the North. To get there, you take the Camí de Ronda coastal path from the main beach of Portbou village, first passing the Las Tres Platgetes beach. You arrive at the beach, which still has some of the pine trees which gave the beach its name, after a short walk of approximately half a kilometre. The pebble cove is some forty metres in length, and offers both tranquillity and an area full of cliffs and reefs to explore. There is also the Pirate s Cave in the same area, one of many that are found on this coast. Del Pi beach is a good place to go diving. An area full of cliffs and reefs to explore and where you ll find the Pirate s cave. Position , ,7 km 0,2 m

Beaches Portbou 13 2 Les Tres Platgetes PORTBOU It is named after the three small bays that historically formed this area, made up of one main bay and two smaller bays. The beach is about a hundred metres long and is composed of gravel and coarse sand. It is just some 200 metres from Gran beach, following the road round to the North. It s worth taking a walk along this path and discovering the different caves in the area, such as the cave of Rats, though there s no trace of the rats now. The coral reefs and rocky areas are ideal for a dive and to explore the marine environment. The Tres Platgetes offers sanctuary from the Tramuntana (the north wind) when it blows, being at the foot of the cliffs between the road and the sea. Composed of gravel and coarse sand, it has numerous caves to explore nearby. Position , ,2 km 0,2 m

Beaches Portbou 15 3 Gran Beach PORTBOU This is the most urban beach in Portbou. Here you ll find all the additional services at your disposal. With bars and restaurants on the promenade and a Tourist information office just a stone s throw from the beach which is about two hundred metres long and has been awarded a blue flag. At one end of the beach you ll find fishing boats beached on the shore. At the other, the Petita beach and continuation of the coastal path towards Les Tres Platgetes and Del Pi beaches. As with all the beaches in Portbou, it is made up of coarse sand and gravel. If you re visiting the town, it is worth taking the Camí de Ronda coastal path, rising above the port, where you ll find the memorial dedicated to the German philosopher Walter Benjamin, right next to the cemetery. An urban beach, which offers all the services, right next to the seafront promenade with bars, restaurants and accommodation. Position , km 0,2 m

Beaches Colera 17 4 Garbet Beach COLERA The beach is right next to the N-260 road, which runs from Llançà to Colera, with the possibility of parking next to the beach. However, in the summer, things become somewhat trickier and, depending on when you arrive, you ll find cars parked all along the road. Made up of large and smaller pebbles there is accommodation and a restaurant next to the beach and even a taxi-boat for ships anchoring at this point on the Alt Empordà coast. It is a beach with very much a family atmosphere, which until recently could be reached easily by train, because there is a railway station just next to it. It is more than six hundred metres long and about 30 metres wide. The restaurant even has a taxi-boat for ships anchoring at this point on the coast. Position , ,8 km 1,5 km

Beaches Colera 19 5 Les Assutzenes Beach COLERA It is named after the numerous white or Madonna lilies that are found in the area. Located between the Garbet and del Borró beaches, it is one of the few beaches in the area with fine sand. The fact that the water is quite shallow makes this a good choice for taking children to. Situated very close to the road N-260, there is a small car park which fills up quickly- in the immediate vicinity of the beach or you can park in the car park of neighbouring Garbet beach. Many visitors also arrive in the boats which can moor in an area marked off by buoys. The beach is not very large, being about 125 metres long. This beach is one of the few in the area with fine sand and shallow water. Position , ,7 km 1,6 km

Beaches Colera 21 6 En Goixa Beach COLERA Located on the left-hand side of Pescadors beach, where you will find the port, En Goixa beach is also known as the beach of the dead. The explanation for the strange name is simply that when the neighbouring town of Portbou didn t have a cemetery of its own, the people who died there were taken to be buried in the cemetery at Colera and they arrived by sea, landing on this beach. At the foot of the cliffs, it is now one of the most visited beaches in Colera. Composed of shingle, it is about 350 metres long. It is worth visiting the sculptural collection of the Art Park, by the artist Joan Padern, located just a few metres away. It is also not far away from all the services found on the promenade. Finding parking in Colera is quite easy. At the foot of the cliffs, right next to the sculptural collection of the Art Park, by the artist Joan Padern. Position , ,5 km 0,1 m

Beaches Llançà 23 7 El Port Beach LLANÇÀ In the heart of the Port of Llançà area. It is a beach of very coarse sand, with the mouth of the Valleta River at one end and the port at the other. In total, it is about 425 metres long and 30 metres wide. Given that it is located in one of the most popular tourist areas of the municipality, it has all the facilities you could require. Surrounded by bars, restaurants and shops, this beach has also been awarded the blue flag. It is also the starting point for activities such as kayaking or windsurfing, and in summer there are many things to do, such as the beach library. Right next to the Port beach, by the parking area, there is a tourist information office. In the summer it offers a number of things to do, such as the beach library. Position , km 0 m

Beaches Llançà 25 8 Grifeu Beach LLANÇÀ A very popular beach in Llançà. Perhaps this is because of its fine sand, perhaps because there is a large free parking area opposite the beach, perhaps because there are lots of facilities in the area or maybe a combination of all of these. The only problem is that this beach is often very busy. It is accessible for people with reduced mobility and is one of the beaches in Llançà that have been granted the blue flag. Grifeu Beach is about 170 metres long and 30 metres wide. It can be very easily reached, as it s on the N-260 road, just after passing the village of Llançà going towards Colera. With fine sand and free parking opposite the beach and, being on the N-260, it is very easy to reach. Position , ,5 km 1,5 km

Beaches Llançà 27 9 La Farella Beach LLANÇÀ It is thought that the name of the beach comes from the fact that they used to fish here using lights (the fishing boats, purse seine boats, used a light to attract and catch shoals of fish) and that the term farell ( little lighthouse ) gave the beach the name of Farella. Actually, the beach is officially divided into Farella and Farella del Mig, which are essentially two beaches joined together and separated by a reef that goes out towards the sea. It is approximately 260 metres long. To get there you should take the road that separates Llançà from Port de la Selva and follow the signs to the beach. But getting there on foot is also highly recommended, following the Camí de Ronda coastal path. The views that you ll encounter along the way are worth it. The name of Platja de la Farella comes from the use of farells by the fishermen. Position , ,8 km 0,5 m

Beaches El Port de la Selva Gran Beach EL PORT DE LA SELVA Position , km 0,5 m This is the main beach in the town and is 320 metres long and 25 metres wide, which starts almost at the crossroads that leads to Selva de Mar and stretches as far as the port. With a combination of sand and coarse sand, depending on which section you find yourself, the bather has virtually all the services they could ask for within walking distance. The promenade runs along the back of this beach and you only have to cross this to reach the numerous commercial and tourist establishments providing a wide range of facilities. The beach also has access for people with reduced mobility and has been awarded a blue flag. There is lots of parking close by, either next to the port area, or at the other end of the beach. 25 The promenade runs along the top of the beach and has numerous commercial and tourist establishments providing a wide range of facilities.

Beaches El Port de la Selva Taita Beach EL PORT DE LA SELVA Situated just before the town centre of Port de la Selva next to the road coming from Llançà the beach at Taita is a small stretch of sand just around eight metres long. A lush pine forest serves as a camouflage and provides a comfortable separation from the traffic that passes along the road. In addition, the Camí de Ronda coastal path, which was totally refurbished a few years ago, passes alongside and it has an area of landscaped slopes. This coastal path, which is wide and in a good state for walking, is a great option for getting to the beach and for exploring the coast. If you need to take your car, you can leave it at the entrance to the Barlovento residential area or in the large car park by the sea which is a few metres further on, stretching as far as the petrol station at the entrance to Port de la Selva. Right across from the beach there is a lush pine forest and the refurbished Camí de Ronda coastal path. Position , km 1,5 km

Beaches El Port de la Selva Taballera Beach EL PORT DE LA SELVA Located in the heart of the Cap de Creus Natural Park, this is a cove found at the end of a long inlet. This gives it a special character, attracting the many boats from both Port de la Selva and Cadaqués which anchor here. Getting there by sea is one of the recommended options, as access by car is rather more difficult. The other option is to get there on foot. This means a hike of a few hours, following the GR-11 footpath, marked by signs to Taballera and Sant Baldiri. The excursion into the natural park and its strange rock formations is worth it, but is quite long. In the area of the beach, which is about 135 metres long and combines coarse sand and gravel, there are still some old fishermen s huts. Arriving by sea is recommended or by a couple of hours hiking along the GR-11 footpath. Position , ,5 km 2,1 km

Beaches Cadaqués Fredosa Cove CADAQUÉS Leave the car next to the Cap de Creus lighthouse or, if there is any space, in one of the lay-bys on bends before that (leaving your car on the road is not allowed). From this point you will find a path that descends towards the Fredosa cove, which is within walking distance. The colour of the water and the combination with the rocks around this area is spectacular. It is worth exploring this area and, for example, going up to the Infern ( hell ) cave. It is in the heart of the of Cap de Creus Nature Reserve and is a very small shingle beach without any facilities. However, going back along the footpath takes you to the lighthouse area with stunning views and a restaurant and bar. It is a very small shingle cove without any services but is very close to the facilities of the Cap de Creus lighthouse. Position , ,3 km 8 m

Beaches Cadaqués Ros Beach CADAQUÉS Ros beach is not very large but, despite that, it s very much appreciated. With sand and pebbles, depending on which part of the beach you are on, and having a car park just a stone s throw away, makes this an option chosen by many bathers. The water is also shallow, which makes this a beach highly recommended for taking children to. Getting there is easy. Once in Cadaqués, you continue along the shore towards the left. After little more than one kilometre you come across Ros beach and there is parking next to the street. Taking a stroll along the whole of this stretch of beachfront is also highly recommended, with postcard views of the bay and its white houses and with banks on which you can sit back and admire it all with calm and tranquillity.. It has a free car park right next to the beach and the water is very shallow. Position , ,6 km 9,6 m

Beaches Cadaqués Beach Es Llané CADAQUÉS This is the beach where Salvador Dalí and his family enjoyed their summers for many years. We can still see what was once the family home, in the middle of an environment which also delighted Federico García Lorca. A close friend of Dalí s, he came to visit in 1925 and 1927, an event captured in a sculpture by J.M. Subirachs rising near the beach. Es Llané is divided in two parts, with both beaches spanning a total of 150 metres of coarse sand and pebbles. Es Llané Gran is longer and better for swimmers. Es Llané Petit tends to be cluttered with small boats which have been pulled ashore, making for a pretty postcard next to the building constructed at the beginning of the last century, with its rather characteristic tower. To get there all we have to do is follow the shoreline out of Cadaqués to the right. There is parking available nearby. Coarse sand and pebble beach at 10 minutes walk from Cadaqués centre. Position , ,7 km 11,5 m

Beaches Roses Montjoi Cove ROSES A name that, through Ferran Adrià, has become a culinary world reference point as, right next to the beach, was the temple of gastronomy, the El Bulli restaurant. It is a cove of about 250 meters long, which combines the coarse sand and pebbles. Just at the back there is a holiday village that carries the same name and provides numerous services and, at the same time, also many visitors. Once in the water, there is an immediate drop, which means that the boats can approach very close to the beach. There is parking space right next to the beach and it has the European EMAS and ISO environmental quality certifications. To get there, follow directions for Cala Montjoi or Cala Jòncols from the Gran Via Pau Casals. It is 12 km from the centre of Roses. Right next to the beach was the temple of world cuisine, the El Bulli restaurant. Position , km 8000 m

Beaches Roses L Almadrava Beach ROSES Also known as Canyelles Grosses, this is one of the most popular beaches in Roses. Approximately 500 metres long by 25 metres wide with fine sand, it is the type of beach that is especially attractive for the whole family. It is located about 5 kilometres from the centre of Roses, but getting there is easy and there is free parking nearby. Follow the road that passes in front of the port and carry on to find the car park. There is also a bus that goes there. Another highly recommended option is to get there by taking a pleasant stroll along the coastal path. L Almadrava is a beach sheltered from the tramuntana (north wind), has all the services you could want and which has been awarded the EMAS and ISO European certifications. One of the most popular beaches in Roses. It has been awarded the European EMAS and ISO certifications. Position , km 4000 m

Beaches Roses El Salatar Beach ROSES Although it might seem to be a single stretch of beach running from the area around breakwaters of the river Ginjolers up to the entrance to Santa Margarita, the beaches in Roses are differentiated into four, according to which section you find yourself on: Nova, Rastell, Salatar and Santa Margarida. Salatar Beach runs for about 500 metres and is located in front of the urbanisation that carries the same name. It is sandy, as are the neighbouring beaches, and it has all the facilities you could want. With good reason, this is one of the most popular tourist areas: full of shops, restaurants, hotels... The beach itself, like those previously mentioned, has been awarded the EMAS and ISO14001, and there is also a volleyball net and a windsurfing school. It can be easily reached on foot, following the promenade and also by car or bus. It is located in one of the most popular tourist areas, full of shops, restaurants and hotels. Position , km 2000 m

Beaches Castelló d Empúries-Empuriabrava Rubina Beach CASTELLÓ D EMPÚRIES-EMPURIABRAVA The beach of Rubina is also known locally as the wild beach. And with good reason. It has been preserved from urban development and has no buildings in the immediate vicinity, unlike its neighbours of Santa Margarita and Empuriabrava. Located between the entrances to the marinas of these two developments, this sandy beach is surrounded by dunes, hollows and lagoon systems typical of marsh areas. It is the only beach in Castelló d Empúries on which dogs and kitesurfing are allowed and, even then, just at the end closest to Santa Margarida. To get there by car you should go around the gyratory system on the Roses road just after the Empuriabrava airfield. There is easy parking just next to the beach. Once you are there, it is important to access the beach using the marked points, taking care not to damage the dunes that are being regenerated. It shouldn t be forgotten that this is an area of the Aiguamolls de l Empordà Natural Park. Also known as the wild beach is the only beach in the municipality on which dogs and kitesurfing are allowed. Position , km 0 m

Beaches Castelló d Empúries-Empuriabrava Can Comes Beach CASTELLÓ D EMPÚRIES-EMPURIABRAVA An enormous beach, 3,900 metres long, which runs from the mouth of the Muga river up to the Nàutic Almatà campsite, close to the mouth of the Fluvià river. But take note, there is a great deal that can only be reached by walking close to the water. Little wonder, as you will find yourself in front of the main lagoons of the Aiguamolls de l Empordà Natural Park and the area is a nature reserve and enjoys maximum protection. A Several species nest in the dunes and hollows in the area and they must not be disturbed. However there is so much space on the rest of the beach that you can enjoy yourself in total tranquility. There are no services other than the campsites located at various points along the beach. Controlled access through the Can Comas track and, on foot, from both ends. If you want to cross from the Empuriabrava residential area, you ll have to wade across the Muga river. A totally natural area, so much so that there are stretches of the Aiguamolls nature reserve where you can only walk along the water. Position , km 0 m

Beaches Castelló d Empúries-Empuriabrava Empuriabrava Beach CASTELLÓ D EMPÚRIES-EMPURIABRAVA This beach is right in front of the residential marina of Empuriabrava and its navigable waterways. It is therefore not surprising that there are all types of facilities available, including a children s playground, sports courts, access for people with reduced mobility, amphibious chairs for the disabled and bars and restaurants. A wide promenade, with plenty of parking space, separates the beach from the buildings of Empuriabrava. It has been awarded the blue flag and the Q for tourist quality, in addition to achieving European EMAS and ISO certifications. Located between the entry to the residential marina and the mouth of the Muga river, it occupies an area of 1,300 metres. Once in Empuriabrava, practically all roads lead to the beach. Awarded the blue flag and the Q for tourist quality, in addition to achieving European EMAS and ISO certifications. Position , km 0 m

Beaches Sant Pere Pescador Sant Pere Pescador Beach SANT PERE PESCADOR The beach of Sant Pere Pescador is the longest of the whole Bay of Roses, with 6.3 kilometres of sand and dunes. There are numerous campsites in the area with direct access to the beach. Being so big there is room for various different activities. In addition, there are areas reserved specifically for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is a place particularly appreciated for these sports and, in fact, on the Sant Pere beach each year they hold one of the windsurfing World Championship trials. There are other isolated places prized for the practice of naturism. With so much space, there is room for everyone. Located between the mouth of the Fluvià and Riuet rivers, there are numerous entrances from the main Sant Pere to L Escala road. Split into: Platja del Riuet, Cortal de la Devesa, Cortal de la Vila, Cal Cristià, Can Sopa, Can Nera, Can Martinet, La Gola; Area of outstanding natural and scenic value; Aiguamolls de l Empordà Natural Park. Space for everyone. Every year there is a windsurfing World Championship trial. Position , ,5 km 2 m

Beaches L Escala Moll Grec Beach L ESCALA Bathing beside the Hellenistic quay of the port of the ancient Greek and Roman cities of Empúries is a luxury that this beach can offer. Majestic, with more than two thousand years of history among the stones, this quay reminds the bathers that this was once the entrance gate of the Greek and Roman civilisations to the Iberian Peninsula. At the other end there is the beautiful village of Sant Martí d Empúries, with its medieval walls, which has been inhabited without interruption for more than 2,600 years. It is worth going to see, as is visiting the Museu d arqueologia de Catalunya-Empúries (Catalan Museum of Archaeology Empúries), nearby. Next to the coastal dunes and the promenade of Empúries, this beach is about 390 metres, is sandy and has achieved the European EMAS and ISO environmental certification. To get there, take the road towards Sant Martí d Empúries. Also a highly recommended way of getting there is by walking along the promenade. You will not find any other beach with an over two thousand year old Hellenistic quay. Part of the old port of Empúries. Position , km 5 m

Beaches L Escala Portitxol Beach L ESCALA Next to the promenade of Empúries and a stone s throw from the entrance to the Museu d Arqueologia de Catalunya-Empúries (Catalan Museum of Archaeology Empúries), the surrounding area of this beach is spectacular. On the right, it pays to take a walk by the wooden steps that lead us to a fantastic viewing point towards the Bay of Roses, the coast of Empúries and the village of L Escala. On the hillside, you can see the Arch of Portitxol, a curious and much appreciated rock formation. This beach is 255 metres long and is of fine sand and is behind the historic Empúries Hostal. Both appeared in the Roger Gual film, Tasting Menu. In the summer you have to pay to park in the nearest car park, next to the hostel. A good alternative is to get there walking down the promenade of Empúries. The beach boasts the European EMAS and ISO certifications. One of the curiosities is the Arch of Portitxol, formed by the rocks on the right-hand side of the beach. Position , km 4 m

Beaches L Escala La Platja L ESCALA Also known as the Beach of Boats (Platja de les Barques), it is situated right in the middle of L Escala village. Until 1962, the beach wasn t intended for swimmers, but was where the fishermen s boats were moored. In short, it was the port before the port was created. You can still see some of the norais, old stone pillars to which the boats were tied and the old mooring bollards from the 18th century, which were used by large coastal boats. This is the heart of the municipality, with activity all year round, not only in summer. It is here that they have the popular singing of havaneres (Cuban sea shanties), the Festa de la Sal (Festival of Salt) and the Greco-Roman Triumvirate fair, among others. Surrounded by the promenade area and bars and restaurants, this is a beach of coarse sand, is 165 metres long and is much appreciated by local bathers. It also has EMAS and ISO environmental certifications. The nearest car park offers blue zone parking. Also known as the beach of the Boats due to the fact that the sand had been used to bank the fishing boats when there was no port. Position , km 3 km

Beaches Torroella de Montgrí-L Estartit Montgó Cove TORROELLA DE MONTGRÍ-L ESTARTIT Situated just on the border between L Escala and Torroella de Montgrí, and therefore, between Alt and Baix Empordà, Montgó cove offers a haven from the Tramuntana (north wind). Due to its rounded shape, there is a theory that suggests that this might have been an ancient sinkhole, which would have been enlarged due to the action of the sea. There are numerous tourist establishments close to the promenade and services on the beach, including adapted toilets. With blue flags and next to the natural park of Montgrí, Medes and the Baix Ter, you are encouraged to walk the coastal path towards the Ventosa point or climb the tower on Montgó point, which was used to warn of attacks by pirates. The easiest access to Montgó cove is from L Escala, since this beach is 12 km from L Estartit by a dirt track or 20 km away by road. Parking area near the beach. Located on the border between L Escala and Torroella de Montgrí, Montgó cove offers a haven from the Tramuntana wind. Position , ,6 km 3,7 m

Beaches Torroella de Montgrí-L Estartit Gran Beach TORROELLA DE MONTGRÍ-L ESTARTIT There are those who say that Gran beach is only the kilometre long section between the port and the residential area of Griells, an area where you can find a large free parking area next to the sand. Officially, the Torroella de Montgrí City Council also include the sections of the Griells and la Pletera beaches, totalling 2.3 km, extending to the mouth of the river Ter. Whatever the case, visitors will find all the facilities they could want at this beach, including water sports, a children s club and amphibious chairs for people with reduced mobility. The view of the Medes Islands is spectacular from this beach of fine sand. Visiting is highly recommended and it s a great place for scuba-diving. With fantastic views of the Medes, visitors will find all the facilities they could want at this beach including water sports, children s club and amphibious chairs. Position , km 0 km

Beaches Torroella de Montgrí-L Estartit Platja de Mas Pinell TORROELLA DE MONTGRÍ-L ESTARTIT The sunrise seen from the mouth of the river Ter is a spectacular experience, with the Medes Islands marine reserve playing a starring role. The section of the beach closest to the river is in a more natural and wilder state. The facilities are concentrated further towards the South, as is the residential area which bears the same name as the beach. Located between the mouth of the river Ter and Les Basses d en Coll, to get there by car, take the road from Torroella to Pals and shortly after the bridge over the Ter, take the turn off that leads towards the Gola del Ter. If you don t mind getting a little wet, you can also walk from the neighbouring beach of La Pletera. The dunes and the native vegetation in the area encourage you to stroll and explore the wonderful surroundings. Getting there before dawn and seeing the sunrise from the mouth of the river Ter, with the Medes in front of you, is highly recommended. Position , ,3 km 2,7 m

Beaches Pals Gran Beach PALS A huge beach, more than 2,400 metres long, which combines a more developed area with numerous facilities, with another which is virtually untouched, featuring dunes and paths which can be explored either on foot or by bicycle. Until a few years ago the tall and recognisable antennas of Radio Liberty were situated here, which the American Government used to broadcast propaganda to the Communist countries of the Soviet block during the cold war. Now, with the antennas no longer here, this space has been preserved from urban development and is a natural environment. The beach is also exposed to the waves and has a steep entry into the water and it costs to park in the nearest car park. The beach forms a continuation with Grau (Pals) and Racó (Begur) beaches. At more than 2,400 metres long, it combines a more developed area with lots of facilities, with another area which is virtually untouched. Position , ,2 km 4,4 m

Beaches Pals El Grau Beach PALS It is situated to the north of the Gran beach in Pals, although as they are continuous, it is difficult to discern at what point they are separated. Regardless, the El Grau beach is known as such for the last 300 metres of sand, ending in Les Basses d en Coll. At the back is a residential area, a campsite and the Platja de Pals golf course and, nearby, the area of rice paddy fields for which the municipality is famous. The beach has coarse sand and can be reached by car, with a parking area nearby in the large open area you come across as soon as you arrive. As with all of this coastal area, it is very open and exposed to the swell and the entry into the water is pretty steep. From here, the Medes Islands seem almost to be within touching distance. It is a continuation of Gran beach, with about 300 metres of coarse sand which extends up to Les Basses d en Coll. Position , ,1 km 3,4 m

Beaches Begur Sa Riera BEGUR Bookended by the coves of Port de Pi and de Rei, the beach of Sa Riera is one of the largest and busiest of Begur. The beach gets its name from the stream which divides it into two parts. On one of these, you ll find many boats beached on the shore, strategically placed so that they can set sail as soon as possible. The other section is 300 metres of sand, a huge space where you can lay down your towel and soak up the sun. It can be easily reached, by car or by bus, from the centre of Begur. It has an access ramp and toilets and showers. The fact of being located in an urban environment - but one which still preserves some of its traditional character with the old fishermen s houses - means that there is a wide range of services in the immediate vicinity of the beach (bars, restaurants, hotels, etc.). Taking a stroll along the coastal path is very much recommended. Is one of the largest beaches of Begur and its name comes from the stream that divides it in two. Position , ,3 km 5,4 m

Beaches Begur Sa Tuna BEGUR Position , ,9 km 2,6 Do not be put off by the winding road you have to take to get there because this remote little beach of Sa Tuna is worth it. The whitewashed houses, with splashes of colour from their doors and shutters, the beached boats, terraces... all conducive to having a good time. It is a gravel beach, about 80 metres long and 25 m wide. The coastal path invites you to explore the rocky coast of the surrounding area, especially in order to reach the next beach, S Eixugador, which is only accessible either from here or by boat. The walk is worth the trouble and the landscape is truly spectacular. Sa Tuna has paid parking nearby. In summer, free parking is hard to find. The whitewashed cottages, with splashes of colour on the doors and shutters, the beached boats, terraces... all conducive to having a good time.

Beaches Begur Aiguablava BEGUR Its shallow, calm waters and the range of services that one can find just a stone s throw from the beach, makes it very suitable for the whole family. 76 Beaches Medieval Villages Girona Medieval Villages The region of Girona distils beauty and history in every direction. Villages like Besalú, Santa Pau, Ripoll, Queralbs or Llívia still preserve the essence of other times. Heading towards the Mediterranean, villages such as Monells, Cruïlles, Corçà, Palau-sator, Peratallada or Pals await to be discovered, and on the edge of the sea, the Old Village of Tossa de Mar, invites visitors to walk along the ramparts that, in other times, protected the villages from pirates and corsairs. These towns and villages, which are surrounded by ramparts, guarded by watch-towers and made up of narrow little streets and quaint squares, appear to have mastered the art of stopping time in its tracks, as they have managed to maintain their medieval character perfectly intact. Medieval villages, a walk where time has come to a stop.
