2 One of the greatest delights of Canadell is going, after having lunch, to lay a couple of hours, in the shadow of the belly of a boat, Josep Pla Casadevall Palafrugell is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the region of Girona. Its coast towns, Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu, represent one of the attractions of the Costa Brava, due to the urban tradition, the cultural richness and the connection that they establish with the environment.

14 Surroundings of Tamariu, Llafranc, Calella As it has been mentioned, Palafrugell is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the region of Girona. Its coast towns, Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu, represent one of the attractions of the Costa Brava, due to the urban tradition, the cultural richness and the connection that they establish with the environment. 1. Situation The coastal towns are located approximately 3 km from the town of Palafrugell. Tamariu appears in the northeast, almost isolated and independent. Calella and Llafranc, however, appear in the southeast and they seem to be a single core, because its growth has blurred the boundary between them. Although the superficial extension of the urban centers is changing, the index building reveals the true population density. While Palafrugell is inhabited by 21,049 people, Tamariu (292), Llafranc (319) and Calella (733) reduce remarkably the number of inhabitants, understanding that these are areas of second residence. The perimeter where they are located consists on a rugged topography, getting points that rise up 160 meters above sea level. The interior corridor, area with moderate inclinations which is the natural boundary that separates them of Palafrugell, is configured by extensive areas of cultivation and large wooded areas. In terms of connections, the urban areas are connected by two track roads that cross the natural environment. It is also important to know that there is a complex tissue of agricultural roads, giving a rich network routes. 2. Urban development Around the second century BC, the Romans first settle in Llafranc. The characteristics of the region offered great opportunities for defense and control of the population, taking into account the crucial and unique geography. However, three centuries later appeared insecurity on the coast, so the settlement was moved inside (in the corridor). 11

15 Approximately in 988 Palafrugell was born, probably as a defense fortified site. A few years later, in response to population growth, the city moved to the coast with temporary districts. In this context, it is understood that began appearing assets, such as churches, watchtowers and roads. After the War of the Spanish Succession ( ), grew the demography and the economy. This, a part of consolidate the temporary districts (Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu), allowed to open fronts. Fishing and farming were the basic productive activities but, years later, the cork manufacturing became the protagonist of the economic recovery. After the post-war, tourism replaced the cork industry, being the largest economic engine, especially in the summertime. Previously there had been tourism too, but was restricted to the wealthy class. 3. Tourist repercussion From the 50s there was the definitive boom. The economic growth allowed the establishment of new suburbs, the increase of second residences in coastal areas and the appearance of new infrastructure to accommodate the city's new population height. The aim was to highlight tourism costs while maintaining the natural characteristics of the site. The proposed works to get that tourism were based on two principles. Firstly, in a way of preparation and organization, from which was intended to ensure the comfort of tourists, as well as improving infrastructure and communication of the various parts of the municipality. Secondly, in a way of proposition, from which was intended to offer the public the different types of tourism within the same area. 4. Qualities of sailor districts TAMARIU. It is the urban zone situated in the most aggressive area, regarding the topography. It was settled along the coast and, when it began to grow, the topography represented a problem. That's why this hasn t generate densification, but residential areas 12

16 have been moving in the hills regardless. At present, the predominant activity offered is diving, apart from other offers coast. LLAFRANC. It is characterized by the nature of the area, represented by rocky beaches hidden between cliffs. In this appears one of the highest peaks in the area, which rises 167 meters above sea level. This region has preserved it s the natural beauty, but also tourism strategies have been established to avoid attracting only mass tourism: the viewpoint, the yacht club and the establishment of heritage buildings. CALELLA. Its nucleus is located in the flatter coastal perimeter. With Llafranc as a neighbor, its appeal lies in the preservation of old houses of fishermen, sailors first settlements. The preservation of this architecture, the implementation part of the Church and Cap Roig in Calella, represent the major attractions. Not discriminate the walkway, an old military road that runs parallel to the coastal perimeter. It s currently the most attractive tourism offer hikers, since (apart from creating an itinerary cores Palafrugell) covers most of the province of Girona. 5. Tourist effect on the population Nowadays, in response of the tourist demand, the main attractions of these villages are located in the coastal summer periods of the year. The public demand is so great that, in summer, triples the population reaches around Palafrugell (about 60,000 inhabitants). Keep in mind, however, that this increase is concentrated on the coastline, leaving the center of Palafrugell forgotten (as the neighbors say). 13
