3 GENERAL COURSE REPORT 07 DAYS SPECIAL ADVENTURE COURSE INSTITUTE: VENUE: REPORT ON: JAWAHAR INSTITUTE OF MOUNTAINEERING & WINTER SPORTS (JIM & WS) PAHALGAM SUB-CENTER: SANASAR SPECIAL ADVENTURE COURSE DURATION OF COURSE: 22 AUG 13 TO 28 AUG 13 (07 DAYS) GENERAL 1. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM & WS) is a joint venture between Ministry of Defence, Government of India and Department of Tourism Govt. of J&K and is one of the four national Institutes in the country which imparts training in adventure activities. Hon ble Raksha Mantri is the president and Chief Minister of J&K state is the vice president of the Institute. The Institute with it s headquarter at Nunwan, Pahalgam, has three sub centres at Bhaderwah (Doda), Sanasar (near Patnitop), Shey (Leh) and one adhoc sub centre at Gulmarg for skiing courses. The superintendence, direction and control of the affairs of the Institute vest in the executive council of the Institute. Over the last 30 years the Institute has excelled in different adventure activities like Mountaineering, Snow Skiing, Paragliding, Search & Rescue, Mountain Expeditions, Water Rafting, short term Special Adventure Courses and Mountain & Tourist Guide courses students (19 boys & 11 girls) of MDK Arya Senior Secondary Public School, Pathankot reported to JIM & WS, Sub Centre, Sanasar, on 21 Aug 2013 evening. The Scheduled training of these 30 students commenced the same day after issue of clothing and equipment. All the students completed the training successfully with desired level of standards.nominal roll of the students is enclosed as Appendix A.
4 INTRODUCTION 2 3. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports, (JIM & WS) conducted Special Adventure Course for 30 students w.e.f 22 Aug 13 to 28 Aug 13 sponsored by Principal, MDK Arya Senior Secondary Public School, Pathankot. AIM GROUP PHOTOGRAPH WITH SH S R SHARMA, OIC, SUB CENTRE SANASAR 4. To expose the students of MDK Arya Senior Secondary Public School, Pathankot to nature, kindling the spirit of adventure, development of personality, character, courage, sportsmanship and confidence through adventure activities to strengthen the national bond of integration as well as to boost adventure tourism in J & K State. STANDARDS TO BE ACHIEVED 5. The competence levels expected from students upon completion of the Special Adventure Course are as follows:- (a) (b) (c) Adventurous attitude. High Standard of youth activities & techniques in mountaineering. Achieve harmony through Adventure Course. (d) Personality development/national Integration through cultural exchange. (e) Develop hobbies in adventure besides excelling in studies.
5 3 OBJECTIVES 6. (a) Promote adventure activities in the state. (b) Impart training on technical aspects of Mountain activities. (c) Hone Mountaineering skills of individuals. (d) Create environment awareness amongst youth. (e) Build personality / character, confidence and courage through Mountain adventure. (d) Impart training in Skiing and to make them competent to participate in National and International winter games. OPENING ADDRESS 7. Opening address was given by Shri S R Sharma, OIC, JIM & WS making the students aware of the well known history of the esteemed Institute JIM & WS. Students were explained safety and security measures to be observed around Sanasar training camp area. They were also explained the discipline to be maintained during training and the standards expected at the end of this Adventure Course. OPENING ADDRESS BY SHRI S R SHARMA, OIC, JIM & WS 8. A copy of training programme is enclosed as Appendix B.
6 CONDUCT OF TRAINING 4 9. The students were trained in Acclimatization walk, Introduction to Mountaineering Equipment, Rope Knots, Hitches, rope coiling, Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Base making, River Crossing and treks to different picturesque and historical places around the area, tent pitching and Tyrolean Traverse. The students also got familiarized with Mountain Hazards, illness of Mountainous and high altitude area with its first aid and treatment. 10. Details of aspects covered during the training are enunciated in subsequent paras. ACCLIMATIZATION WALK / PHYSICAL EXERCISE 11. Given the location of the sub centre of the Institute at approx 7800 ft, though acclimatization was not mandatory, for acquiring physical fitness and mental robustness, initial period was utilized to achieve the same. The students were routinely taken outdoor in early morning hours for mountain PT to maintain the acquired physical standards. ACCLIMATIZATION WALK MORNING PT TECHNICAL TRAINING 12. Training was provided in basic skills of rock craft, administration in mountain terrain & introduction and use of mountaineering equipment. Preparing backpack for trek and walking in mountainous terrain, survival in jungles. Details of rock craft and other adventure activities conducted are as follows:
7 5 (a) Rock Climbing & Rappelling: The students were exposed to various types of rock surfaces for climbing and rappelling techniques. ROCK CLIMBING RAPPELLING (b) River Crossing & Zip Wire: Students were provided fundamental knowledge in the form of lecture cum demonstration on methods of negotiating fast flowing streams and nallas in mountainous areas by way of River Crossing & Zip Wire followed by practicing it in groups. They also learned the method of carrying and evacuation of casualty when faced during natural and man made disasters. RIVER CROSSING TYROLEAN TRAVERSE
8 6 (c) Treks: Students were also trained in trekking. They were taught about the various requirements in terms of equipment needed on long treks. Students were taken to historical places like Shankpal temple & local Sanasar village, where they observed the local tradition & culture. Their interaction with the locals helped in cultural exchange & promotion of adventure tourism in state. TREK TO FAMOUS SHANKPAL TEMPLE (d) Tent Pitching: Students were demonstrated the method of tent pitching and they practiced pitching family tents and dome tents which were used by them during stay around the training camp. They were made aware of use of these tentages during survival camps in the jungles while on search and rescue missions. TENT PITCHING
9 7 (e) Lectures/Presentations: The following aspects of adventure activities and related subjects were covered in great details in the form lectures and demonstrations. (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) Introduction to Mountaineering Equipment Do s and Dont s of Mountaineering First Aid & CPR Load packing & walking in mountains INSTRUCTORS DELIVERING LECTURES (f) Games: Students were made to take interest to participate in games like volley ball, badminton, cricket. Through discussions with the instructors they also got familiarized with adventure sports like skiing, paragliding, water rafting and Para jumping. Students showed keen desire to undergo training at the institute for the adventure sports in near future.
10 (g) Introduction to Para Gliding 8 The students were introduced to the currently famous air aero sport of paragliding. They were explained various types and parts of a Paraglider and all technical mechanisms involved in its operation. They were also given ground training of handling the gliders which forms a part of Basic Paragliding Course. STUDENTS ENJOYING PARAGLIDING DEMONSTRATION ACCOMMODATION 13. The accommodation facility was made in Institute Huts at Sanasar, with good lodging and dining facilities. Furnished rooms with attached bathrooms were provided to all the students and the teacher escorts. INSTITUTE HUTS
11 FOOD The participants were provided hygienic and palatable food during the training with additional energy supplements like fruits, dry fruits, toffees and sweets etc..hot food was served by using food warmers to keep the food warm. EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING STUDENTS ENJOYING SUMPTUOUS FOOD 15. Keeping in view the harsh conditions and cold and rainy weather of Sanasar area the participants were provided with quality equipment and clothing gear for training purpose. They were issued with quality clothing like T-shirt, Trek-suits, sling etc by the institute. EQUIPMENT & CLOTHING ISSUED BY THE INSTITUTE
12 MEDICAL FIRSTAID Dedicated Nursing Assistant of the institute provided medical support to the participants through out the course duration. Different first aid kits were prepared for trek, rock area and travelling. The students were educated about the mountain hazards, illnesses of the mountainous and high altitude area with its treatment modalities. Different techniques of casualty evacuation in relation to rescue from accidental sites and difficult mountain terrain were demonstrated to and practiced by the students. OBSERVATIONS 17. (a) The participants showed marked interest in learning and adopting the skills of adventure. (b) The participants improved a lot in their physical as well as mental capabilities. (c) The participants showed keen interest in participating in other courses at JIM & WS. (d) The participants got involved in every adventure activity in a well disciplined manner and gave their best performance. FEEDBACK 18. Photo copies of feedback by participants are attached as Appendix C, reflecting standards of training, accommodation and other facilities provided by the Institute during the camp. RECOMMENDATIONS 19. It is recommended that more adventure groups may be sent to different centers viz, Headquarter Pahalgam, Sub Centre Bhaderwah, Sub Centre Leh, JIM & WS for other adventure activities like Basic, Advance Mountaineering, Mountain Adventure, Mountain rescue courses, Basic, Intermediate and Advance skiing courses and paragliding courses. Maximum students should be given opportunity and exposure in adventure activities to enhance their leadership, team spirit and character qualities to serve the nation.
13 11 GRADUATION CEREMONY 20. The students presented a colorful cultural programme after completion of scheduled training. Beautiful events like singing, dancing, Jokes and mimicry were presented by the participants. The event was followed by the distribution of the course badges, certificates and prizes by OIC, JIM & WS, Sub Centre Sanasar. He had mouthful praise for the participants who presented the colorful cultural programme and he also presented a memento to the escorts of the group. 14 12 CONCLUSION 21. Dr. Bela Ghai, Principal, MDK Arya Senior Secondary Public School took keen interest in sending their students to JIM & WS for training activities. During the Adventure camp the training was imparted to make the MDK Arya Senior Secondary Public School participants confident of living in Mountainous terrain, adjust with difficulties faced during their stay away from home and to accept and adapt with different cultures. Cultural exchange through adventure helped the participants in development of personality, sportsmanship and character. They were also made aware of the environmental changes and its adverse effects in future. The performance of the participants validates the fact that desired standards of exposure and training in Adventure techniques were achieved.
