Top Paris Sights and Attractions First visits to Paris can be daunting: nearly every square inch of the city seems to be seeping with history and beauty. All of it is worth seeing and exploring, but there are some Paris tourist attractions that simply shouldn't be missed. Here are ten of the best Paris sights and attractions, chosen for their mass popularity, historical importance, or sheer aesthetic appeal. If you want to experience Paris' most essential attractions, this guide will help you pinpoint what to see and do first. The Louvre: To learn the Louvre in and out, you might need a lifetime. Still, one has to start somewhere. The site of the world's largest and most diverse collection of pre-20th century painting, sculpture, and decorative objects, The Louvre is definitely one of Paris' best attractions. Not forgetting the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, bask in the works of Vermeer, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and countless others. The palace itself is testament to a rich history spanning from the medieval period to the present. The adjacent Tuileries gardens are perfect for a stroll pre-or post-visit. (Closed on Tuesdays) Notre Dame Cathedral: No first trip to Paris is complete without a visit to this marvel of gothic architecture. One of the most singular and beautiful cathedrals of Europe, Notre Dame Cathedral's dramatic towers, spire, stained glass and statuary are guaranteed to take your breath away. Witness firsthand the spot that was once the heartbeat of medieval Paris, and that took over 100 years of hard labor to complete. Climbing the North tower to see Paris from the hunchback Quasimodo's vantage is essential, too. Eiffel Tower: More than any other landmark, the Eiffel Tower has come to represent an elegant and contemporary Paris. The iron tower, which was built for the 1889 World Exposition by Gustave Eiffel, was wildly unpopular with Parisians when it was unveiled, and was nearly torn down. It has since attracted over 220 million visitors, and it would be hard to imagine Paris now without it. The tower crowns the Paris night sky with its festive light, and glitters up a storm every hour. Cliché? Maybe. But essential. Musée d'orsay: Walk over the bridge from the Louvre to the Musée d'orsay-- and see the bridge between classical and modern art. Housing the world's most important collection of impressionist and

post-impressionist painting, the Musée d'orsay's light, airy rooms whir you through three floors of modern wonders, from Degas' ethereal dancers to Monet's water lilies, all the way to Gaugin's leafy jungles. Major works by Van Gogh, Delacroix, Manet, and others await you, too. (Closed on Mondays) The Sorbonne and the Latin Quarter: The Sorbonne University is the historic soul of the Latin Quarter, where higher learning has flourished for centuries. Founded in 1257 for a small group of theology students, the Sorbonne is one of Europe's oldest universities. It has hosted countless great thinkers, including philosophers René Descartes, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Simone de Beauvoir. Enjoy a drink on the café terrace in front of the college before exploring the winding streets of the Latin Quarter behind it. Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysées: The 164-foot Arc de Triomphe commissioned by Emperor Napoléon I does exactly what it was made to do: evoke sheer military power and triumph. It was built in an age when leaders erected monuments in their own honor, and scaled to their egos. The arch's beautiful sculptures and reliefs commemorate Napoléon's generals and soldiers. Visit the Arc de Triomphe to begin or culminate a walk down the equally grandiose Avenue des Champs-Elysées. You can't help but feel grand yourself. Sacre Coeur and Montmartre: With its unmistakeable white dome, the Sacre Coeur sits at the highest point of Paris on the Montmartre knoll, or butte. This basilica, which was consecrated in 1909, is bestknown for its garish gold mosaic interiors and for its dramatic terrace, from which you can expect sweeping views of Paris on a clear day. Take the funicular up with a metro ticket and stop off at Sacre Coeur before exploring the winding, village-like streets of Montmartre. And after expending all your energy climbing Montmartre's formidable hills and stairs, consider a traditional Parisian cabaret at the legendary Moulin Rouge. Père Lachaise Cemetery: Paris counts within its walls many of the world's most poetic cemeteries-- but Père Lachaise outdoes them all. Countless famous figures are buried here: the most popular being The Doors lead singer Jim Morrison, whose tomb is kept constant vigil by fans. The French playwright Molière, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, and Richard Wright are a few others. On a sunny day, climbing to the cemetery's summit and looking down on the lavishly designed crypts can be surprisingly joyful. Boat Tour of the Seine River: Seeing some of Paris' most beautiful sites glide past as you drift down the Seine is an unforgettable and essential experience. Companies such as Bateaux Parisiens offer 1-hour tours of the Seine year-round for about 10 Euros. You can hop on near Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower. Go at night to enjoy the shimmering play of light on the water, and dress warml y-- the wind from off the Seine can be chilly. You can also take tours of some of Paris' canals and waterways, which will allow you to see a semi-hidden side of the city. Best Paris Day Trips Venture Outside of the City Once you've seen Paris' most essential attractions, why not get out of the city for a day and find out what lies outside its limits? Several interesting and entertaining destinations, including chateaus, natural parks, and medieval fortifications, are within close reach of the city. We point you to the best Paris day trips. Chateau de Versailles No visit to Paris would be complete without a visit to the former seat of royal power at Versailles. A symbol of the French monarchy and its downfall following the Revolution of 1789, the palace was erected by the powerful "Sun King" Louis XIV, then later home to the ill-fated Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, who were eventually executed. The palace, including the emblematic hall of mirrors, was recently renovated. (Closed on Mondays) Getting there: Take RER C to Versailles-Rive Gauche; follow signs to chateau.

Fontainebleau Palace Steeped in centuries of royal history, the palace and surrounding forest of Fontainebleau housed French monarchs starting from the 13th century. An excursion here will sate both history and architecture buffs and nature-lovers, who will find miles of hiking trails in the historic park and forest around the palace. Barbizon, a town which has gained fame as the home of painters such as Millet, is nestled in the Fontainebleau forest and is also worth a detour. (Closed on Tuesdays) Getting there: Take the SNCF regional train line From Paris Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau-Avon. Where to go to take home a little je ne sais quoi For reasons that elude most of us, Parisians seem to make impeccable fashion sense look like a walk in the park. It's no surprise that Paris remains the reigning center of all things couture. After museums and monuments, shopping in Paris attracts millions of visitors each year. Top Paris shopping districts: Louvre-Tuileries and Faubourg Saint-Honoré Best for: Crème de la crème designer fashion, chic home furnishings, and quality cosmetics Getting there: Metro Concorde, Tuileries (Line 1), Pyramides (Line 7, 14) Main streets: Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Rue Saint-Honoré, Rue de la Paix, Place Vendome. The Faubourg Saint-Honoré district is the pulse of Paris design and fashion. Part of the Louvre-Tuileries neighborhood and just a few blocks from the Opera Garnier and the Paris department stores block on Boulevard Haussmann, the Saint-Honoré fashion district is occupied by classic designers like Versace, Hermes, and Yves Saint Laurent, but also houses resolutely trendy concept shops such as Colette. For after-shopping unwinding: Hotel Costes Bar and Lounge Paris Department Stores District - Boulevard Haussmann Best for: Getting lost in Paris' prestigious-- and dizzying-- department stores (grands magasins) Getting there: Metro Havre-Caumartin (Line 3 or 9), Opera (Lines 3, 7, 8), RER Auber(Line A) Main streets: Boulevard Haussmann Paris department stores are famous for being worlds unto themselves. Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores dominate Boulevard Haussmann with real Belle Epoque grandeur, concentrating top designer collections for men and women, gourmet food shopping, home design, jewelry, and even hardware into a labyrinth of consumer delights. The Marais Best for: Eclectic fashion, unique jewelry, antiques and fine art. Getting there: Metro Saint-Paul (Line 1) or Hotel de Ville (Line 1, 11) Main streets: Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, Place des Vosges, Rue de Turenne, Rue des Rosiers The historic Marais quarter is prime stomping ground for shoppers with an eye for the unique and finelycrafted, not to mention antique and art lovers. Try antiques or fine-arts shopping on the Place des Vosges, jewelry shopping at boutiques like Satellite on Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, or explore boutiques featuring up-and-coming designers on Rue des Rosiers. Avenue Montaigne and Avenue des Champs-Elysées Best for: Designer shopping, trendy chain stores, Sunday shopping

Getting there: Metro Alma Marceau (Line 9), Franklin D. Roosevelt (Lines 1 and 9), George V (Line 1), RER A (Charles de Gaulle-Etoile) Avenue Montaigne and Avenue des Champs-Elysées form one of the city's hottest fashion junctures. Ave. Montaigne is fast outstripping Saint Honoré in notoriety, with legendary designers like Chanel and Dior lining the street. The Champs-Elysées features luxury names (Louis Vuitton) while also being a major spot for shopping in trendy global chains like Zara. Saint-Germain-des-Prés Best for: Chic classic design, books, home furnishings Getting there: Metro Saint-Germain-des-Prés (Line 4), Sèvres-Babylone (Line 10) Main streets: Blvd. St.-Germain, Rue St. André-des-Arts, Rue de Sèvres Once synonymous with the famous intellectuals who haunted local cafés, St.-Germain-des-Prés has acquired several shades of chic and is now a preferred spot of BCBG's (yuppies). Sonia Rykiel and Paco Rabanne have boutiques here, and the famous department store Le Bon Marché includes a gourmet market that all foodies should visit. Les Halles and Rue de Rivoli Best for: Major chains and trendy boutiques Getting there: Metro Chatelet-Les Halles (Line 4, RER A,B) Main streets: Rue de Rivoli, Rue Pierre-Lescot, Rue Etienne Marcel, Rue de Turbigo Once the locus of "the guts of Paris"-- an enormous outdoor food market, the area around Châtelet-les Halles was transformed into a major shopping area in the 20th century. At metro Les Halles is a monstrous underground mall, where global chain stores reign. Rue de Rivoli is much the same. In the Rue Montorgueil area, quirky contemporary boutiques abound, including Barbara Bui and young cutting-edge designers. Top Traditional Paris Cafes Icons of a City's Past There is nothing more French, or more specifically-- Parisian-- than taking a few moments out of your day to sit with an espresso in one of the city's thousands of cafes. Indoors on a cozy banquette or out on a sunny terrace, drinking and people-watching is one of the most cherished past-times in France. While there are charming and unique spots all over Paris, this list includes some of the classics-- famed artists, writers and musicians frequented many of these traditional Paris cafes, and most have done their best to retain that old-paris glamour. 1. Café de la Paix Declared a historic site by the French government in 1975, this iconic café is the setting for many a painting and poem. The ornate frescoed interior and proximity to the Paris Opera Garnier make this classic look more like a museum than simple watering hole. Once loved by French writers such as Guy de Maupassant and Emile Zola, the café is so well-known that legend claims that you will surely run into a friend there. Address: 12 Boulevard des Capucines, 9th arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) Le Select One of the great classic Parisian cafés, this one gets bragging rights for its long list of past clients. Henry Miller, Hemingway, Picasso and F. Scott Fitzgerald all took their coffee breaks here as the sun draped over them on the terrace. Mosaic tiles line the floor and prop up the wicker chairs found in most

traditional Parisian cafés. The one noticeable difference between the cafe's former and current guise is the lack of smoke trails swirling through the air smoking is now banned indoors in France. Address: 99 Boulevard du Montparnasse, 6th arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) Les Deux Magots When Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir weren t debating across the street at Cafe de Flore, they were lounging here, at this now- upscale hangout for tourists and the Paris elite. Grab a newspaper and a café crème, and plant yourself on the sunny terrace while you imagine the days when Ernest Hemingway, Albert Camus and Pablo Picasso rubbed elbows in this very spot. Address: 6 place St Germain des Pres, 6th arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) Cafe de Flore Across the street from rival Les Deux Magots, Le Cafe de Flore has changed little since World War II: red booths, wide mirrors and an enviable clientele. While it has become a hotspot for tourists and upwardly mobile types, and no longer attracts as many students and artists, it still merits a visit for the ambiance. The café once hosted Sartre and de Beauvoir s passionate discussions, among others. Address: 172 Boulevard Saint-Germain, 6th arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) The Hemingway Bar Located within the Ritz Hotel, the Hemingway is an old haunt of Sartre and James Joyce, and pays special tribute to the eponymous author with a wall display of 25 of his original photos from A Moveable Feast. Enjoy beers from around the world here, or Hemingway's old favorite, the single malt whiskey. The wood-paneling and cushy leather stools will make you feel like you've just stepped onto the set of An American in Paris. Address: 15 Place Vendome, 1st arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) Cafe de la Rotonde Back when Victor Libio opened this corner café in 1911, starving artists like Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani could spend hours nursing a ten-centime cup of joe, paying only with a drawing if they didn t have the cash. These days, drinks at La Rotonde cost a bit more than your latest work of art, but the café is still worth visiting for its Art Deco elegance and Old Paris feel. Address: 105 Boulevard du Montparnasse, 6th arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) La Closerie des Lilas If not for the glass-roofed area and brass rails, stop by this revered Montparnasse haunt for its tables, which are name plated after the café's former regulars: Oscar Wilde, Paul Cézanne, Emile Zola and Paul Verlaine, to name a few. Enjoy an afternoon café, or stop in for a drink at the piano bar followed by a candlelit dinner in one of the comfortable banquettes. Address: 171 Boulevard du Montparnasse, 6th arrondissement Phone: + 33(0) Le Procope The oldest café in Paris, founded in 1686, Le Procope was once frequented by such emblematic 18th century figures as Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin. With its chandelier-clad high ceilings and walls lined with antique paintings, to visit this café is to step back in time. Come in for a café and stay on for their scrumptious coq au vin. Address: 13 Rue de l'ancienne Comédie, 6th arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) Le Café Tournon

Steps from Luxembourg Gardens, this swanky spot is filled with the city s journalists, politicians and celebrities. Known for its selection of regional wines and market-fresh cuisine, Le Café Tournon is great for a mid-afternoon cappuccino or an evening meal. Address: 18 Rue de Tournon, 6th arrondissement Phone: +33 (0) Fouquet's Founded in 1899, this café, restaurant and accompanying hotel is the quintessential spot for Parisian hobnobbing. French President Nicolas Sarkozy himself celebrated his electoral victory here in 2007, and Fouquet's is also a top venue for Cesar Film Awards after-parties. After having your photo taken atop the gold-plated stars on the sidewalk entrance, slide into one of the plush leather chairs for a drink overlooking the Champs-Elysées. Address: 99 Avenue des Champs-Elysées, 8th arrondissement Phone: + 33 (0)
